Hollywood opens its presents early this weekend with the arrival of a few deluxe-wrapped packages full of good holiday cheer.
"Anna and the King," a richly decorated version of the classic musical "The King and I" sans the music, should pique the interests of romantic moviegoers young and old. It stars Academy Award winner Jodie Foster and Hong Kong action icon Chow Yun-Fat.
Gifts for the kids come in the form of the studio movies "Stuart Little" and "Bicentennial Man." Based on a beloved children's novel, "Stuart Little" tells the live-action adventures of a pet mouse, with a voice provided by Michael J. Fox. In "Bicentennial Man," Robin Williams undergoes a different kind of transformation, playing an android who learns what it means to be human. "Mrs. Doubtfire" director Chris Columbus helms the film.

Jurassic Park III's William H. Macy, to Hollywood.com, on how he and his wife, actress Felicity Huffman, have different styles in bringing up their daughter Sophia, who will be 1 years old on Aug. 1:
"I'm not as cool as my wife is. She'll take a bath with Sophia, and Sophia will poop in the tub. It happened to me once, boy, and I'm telling you, I was out of that water in a nanosecond. Flic sits there going, 'Could you get
me a towel?' and I’m going, 'Get out! Get out!' ... [Sophia] thinks I'm funny, so that's the best thing I take from it so far. She thinks I'm hysterical."

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 21, 2001 -- Bad news for all Jay and Silent Bob fans, as occasional "X"-man David Duchovny has had to give up his plans to appear in the next Kevin Smith-directed project.
A posting on the wizardworld.com Web site says that Duchovny had been approached about playing a role in the upcoming film "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" by writer/director/actor Smith, a self-professed fan of Duchovny's. While Duchovny had expressed interest in the role, his schedule has prevented him from taking the role.
In addition to his upcoming return to "The X-Files," Duchovny is starring in this summer’s Ivan Reitman-directed sci-fi/comedy "Evolution" opposite Julianne Moore and William H. Macy.
Smith has said that there is another actor being considered for the role, "but it’s too early to say just who it is." However, don’t feel bad for Smith, who named his golden re

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 21, 2000 -- Whitney Houston could still face drug possession charges for the marijuana that was allegedly found in her purse at a Hawaiian airport in January, USA Today reports.
Despite previous reports that Houston was off the hook, a Hawaii county prosecutor, Mel Fugino, says the case is ''still in the investigative stages.''
If convicted, the singer could face a $1,000 fine and 30 days in jail.
In other Houston news (or gossip, in this case), next week's National Enquirer comes right out and declares Houston a cocaine addict, Liz Smith dishes in her Newsday daily column.
And in other Houston (good) news, the diva will release phase 1 of her greatest hits package Tuesday -- a vinyl box set featuring mostly unreleased dance remixes of some of her biggest hits: ''I'm Your Baby Tonight (Dronez Club Mix),'' ''I Will Always Love Yo

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 10, 2000 -- Robert De Niro is bleepin' funny.
At least according to comedy performers, who picked Mr. "GoodFellas" as a nominee for the 14th Annual American Comedy Awards, to be presented Feb. 6 in Los Angeles.
De Niro is up for funniest lead actor in a film for his turn as a crying mob boss in "Analyze This." He's up against Jim Carrey ("Man on the Moon"), Mike Myers ("Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me") and Kevin Spacey ("American Beauty").
"Analyze This" is also nominated for funniest motion picture, along with the supposedly side-splitting "American Beauty" and the decidedly off-beat "Being John Malkovich."
Lisa Kudrow picked up a funniest supporting-actress nomination for "Analyze This." The "Friends" star will compete against Joan Cusack ("Runaway Bride") and Cameron Diaz ("Being John Malkovich.")

It looks like tough sledding for Hollywood this pre-Christmas weekend, according to distribution executives with an eye on tracking study data.None of the three new wide releases appears likely to open impressively.
"It doesn't look too exciting in terms of the openings," said one studioexecutive. "The first choice on 'Bicentennial Man' is running only like 8%. Now, admittedly, it's (only mid-week) but I would think they would like to have been in double digits by now."
Buena Vista/Touchstone and Columbia Pictures' PG-rated sci-fi fantasy "Bicentennial Man," directed by Chris Columbus and starring Robin Williams, opens Friday at about 2,200 theaters.
While 2,200 theaters is certainly a wide break, it's not as wide as last weekend's theater count for "Toy Story 2" (3,257), "The Green Mile" (2,875), "The World Is Not Enough" (3,063), "End Of Days" (2,652) or "Sleepy Ho

Anthony Minghella, the Oscar-winning director of "The English Patient," was named Best Director for "The Talented Mr. Ripley," starring Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow, which was reportedly shown to the board in an unfinished print.
Best Actor honors went to Russell Crowe for his portrayal of tobacco industry whistle-blower Dr. Jeffrey Wigand in "The Insider," co-starring Al Pacino, and British actress Janet McTeer was named Best Actress for the mother-daughter film "Tumbleweeds."
