Maybe you––like us––are watching the 74th Annual Tony Awards at home on your big screen while scrolling through Twitter on your small screen. Maybe you’re reading this while doomscrolling in your stretchiest pair of pants and just looking for some feel-good content to distract you from reality.
Either way, we’re glad you’re here to be a part of “the night America watches Broadway.”
Since we love an award show and stan Broadway just as much as Hollywood, we’re watching every minute of this year’s long-awaited Tony Awards to indulge in some red carpet glam, listen to acceptance speeches, and chuckle at a few feel-good memes.
The 2021 Tony Awards is making us all emotional
Wow, I’m all up in my feelings watching #TonyAwards. An entire damn industry has been put on hold all this time. I can’t imagine how much it must mean for all these theater folks to be able to come together and celebrate each other.
— Saeed Jones (@theferocity) September 26, 2021
Grab the tissues.
I cried 4 times within the first 20 mins of #TonyAwards. I’m going to be dehydrated by noon.
— Lucy Shorrocks (@Lucysh) September 27, 2021
Don’t forget to hydrate.
The 2021 Tony Awards blessed us with fantastic hosts and surprise performances
Queen Audra on my screen is always welcome. #TonyAwards
— Brooke Mayberry (@bmayberry92) September 26, 2021
All hail the QUEEN.
Sorry still not over the fact that after 18 months they decided to open the 2021 Tony Awards with a number from Hairspray!!!!! Folks you can’t make this stuff up
— Casey Mink (@Casey_Mink) September 26, 2021
Can’t say we expected this but we’re here for it.
“Kiss today goodbye and point me toward tomorrow.” You see that, world? No matter who you are, theatre is accessible to everyone. Bravo, @ALISTROKER. #RepresentationMatters#TonyAwards@TheTonyAwards@broadwaybopopic.twitter.com/boYUjkuJFJ

“I’ll have what she’s having” – me, watching Sheryl Lee Ralph introduce whatever is about to happen
— Chris Murphy (@christress) September 27, 2021
Broadway wasn’t actually back until Sheryl Lee Ralph stepped on that stage tonight. NOW it’s back.
— Jami Jurich (@JamiJurich) September 27, 2021
We don’t make the rules.
YALL BETTER PUT SOME RESPECT ON SHERYL LEE RALPH.

2021 Tony Award winners remind us we have a long way to go to make real change happen on Broadway
“As a brown, queer, Arab-American woman, I’m proud to win this award. It has been 10 years for a woman to win this award.” Best Choreography goes to Sonya Tayeh for Moulin Rogue! #TonyAwards

It’s about time.
britton smith. that’s it that’s the tweet.
— taylor??♀️ミ☆?12 (@taylorsnavi) September 27, 2021
Britton Smith’s speech while accepting Tony Award for the Broadway Advocacy Coalition was incredible and a call to action for everyone in the room, and everyone watching at home:
“It’s not enough to have an all-white team and one Black person on your team…That’s how we earn the phrase Black Lives Matter.”
This speech by Britton Smith about the work @BwayAdvocacyCo is so moving, powerful, and a call to action for all of us in the entertainment industry to *actually* create a safe, equitable, inclusive entertainment industry. #TonyAwards2021
— Sarah Ann Masse #IASolidarity (@SarahAnnMasse) September 27, 2021
I hope everyone was paying extremely close attention to Britton Smith’s speech tonight

The choice to switch from Paramount+ for the live telecast ceremony to CBS for the performances was…confusing
Me quickly switching from paramount+ to CBS to watch #broadwayisback only for big brother?????? to be on pic.twitter.com/yVjtIzM29b
— b ♡ (@HowdyImB) September 27, 2021
No one was planning on watching Big Brother. We’re here for Broadway drama, not reality TV drama.
And that was the year all of theater Twitter accidentally watched big brother together… #TonyAwards#broadwayisback ?
— Ashley Ann Wolfe ?️? (@AshleyAnnWolfe) September 27, 2021
I like that this new format for the #TonyAwards allows for longer performances, though I think all four hours should have been shown together on Paramount+ or CBS without having to switch. #BroadwayIsBack
— Linda Buchwald (@PataphysicalSci) September 27, 2021
We agree with Linda on this one. The switch between platforms got especially clunky for Broadway fans in select areas across the country due to NFL delays.
Despite technical difficulties and delays, the 2021 Tony Awards were worth the wait:
#TonyAwards, you’re killin’ it tonight! Thank you to the entire theater community for giving us theater lovers the opportunity to laugh, cry, and feel once again through your brilliant storytelling. #Broadway #broadwayisback
