Pop superstar Madonna has urged fans to make donations to her charity to mark her 55th birthday on Friday (16Aug13). The singer is celebrating the milestone by boosting funds for her Raising Malawi foundation, asking devotees to hand over their cash to help her surgeon friend Dr. Eric Borgstein continue working with sick children in the country.
She has posted a picture of her pal on her Instagram.com page with a caption which reads, "Thank u (sic) all for your birthday love! Help me celebrate my birthday, by donating to Raising Malawi to support the work of one of my heroes, pediatric surgeon Dr. Eric Borgstein... Revolution of love!"
Blue Oyster Cult founding member Allen Lanier has died at the age of 67. The keyboardist/guitarist passed away in hospital after a fight with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a lung disease commonly associated with smoking. No further details surrounding his death were available at the time WENN goes to press.
Frontman Eric Bloom broke the news on the band's Facebook.com page on Wednesday (14Aug13), writing, “My great friend Allen Lanier has passed. I’ll miss the guy even though we hadn’t spoken in awhile. He was so talented as a musician and a thinker. He read voraciously, all kinds of things, especially comparative religion. We drove for years together, shared rooms in the early days.
"We partied, laughed, played. All BOC (sic) fans and band members will mourn his death. Ultimately smoking finally got to him. He had been hospitalized (sic) with C.O.P.D. It was Allen who heard some old college band tapes of mine and suggested I get a shot as the singer in 1968. A lot of great memories, over 40 years worth. Maybe he’s playing a tune with (punk writer) Jim Carroll right now."
Lanier, who was the one-time partner of singer Patti Smith, was with Blue Oyster Cult for almost 20 years from 1967 to 1985 when he left, only to return two years later (1987).
He retired from performing with the band in 2006 and co-wrote several of the band's hit songs including True Confessions, Tenderloin and Lonely Teardrops.
Singer Monique Powell is taking legal action to win back the Save Ferris name after her former bandmates sued her for allegedly using the title without their permission. Brian Mashburn, Eric Zamora, Bill Uechi, Brian Williams and Evan Kilbourne filed suit against Powell in June (13), accusing her of falsely promoting a July (13) appearance in California as a reunion gig.
The rockers asked a judge to ban Powell from using the Save Ferris name, but now she has filed her own complaint, arguing the band technically belongs to her.
She maintains the Come On Eileen hitmakers never officially disbanded, but that the others bowed out, leaving her as the only remaining member of Save Ferris.
According to TMZ.com, the frontwoman wants the court to dismiss the lawsuit and grant her full use of the Save Ferris name.
Powell joined the line-up in 1995 after original singer Adrienne Knolff quit.
Celebrated singer/songwriter Jj Cale has died at the age of 74. The musician passed away at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, California on Friday (26Jul13) after suffering a heart attack, according to an announcement on his personal website.
Born John Weldon Cale in Oklahoma, he adopted the name JJ Cale to avoid being confused with John Cale of the Velvet Underground and helped create the Tulsa Sound, a musical style which combined blues, rockabilly, and country.
He became famous in the 1970s, when Eric Clapton covered his songs After Midnight and Cocaine and the pair collaborated on 2006 album The Road To Escondido, which won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2008.
Cale released 14 studio albums but enjoyed greater success as a songwriter than a singer, penning popular tracks for Tom Petty, Carlos Santana and Johnny Cash.
Stone Temple Pilots have announced their first tour with Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington as frontman. Bennington replaced Scott Weiland in the band earlier this year (13) and made his debut as frontman in May (13) at KROQ's Weenie Roast festival - and now it looks as if his position will be permanent.
Just days after STP and Bennington confirmed a headlining spot at the first annual Rockwave Festival in Fort Myers, Florida on 21 September (13), the group has released details of a new tour, which kicks off in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on 4 September (13).
Brothers Dean and Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz have also teamed up with their new singer in the studio and the band plans to release a new EP later this year (13). A new single, titled Out of Time, has blasted its way on to the U.S. rock charts.
Jessica Simpson has returned to her Twitter.com page for the first time since she gave birth to son Ace Knute on 30 June (13). The singer posted a funny picture of her mother Tina wrapped up like a baby to her account on Saturday (13Jul13). Simpson quipped, "(Fiance) Eric got carried away with his swaddling skills!"
Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez have wed in an intimate ceremony in the groom's native France. The pregnant actress, 46, exchanged vows with the Unfaithful star, 47, at the Chateau des Conde in Vallery on Saturday (13Jul13) in front of just 60 guests, including Martinez's mother, Rosemarie, and brother, Vincent.
Photos obtained by WENN show the bride wearing a traditional white gown as she arrived at the church in a vintage white car, decorated with lace.
According to local reports, a civil union was held first, in accordance with French law, followed by a religious ceremony in the village chapel.
The wedding reception was held outdoors and fireworks lit up the sky in celebration.
Berry began dating Martinez, who previously romanced Australian pop star Kylie Minogue, in 2010 after meeting on the set of their film flop Dark Tide, and they became engaged last year (12).
In April (13), the Oscar winner revealed she was three months pregnant with her fiance's son, a half-brother for her five-year-old daughter Nahla, from her relationship with French Canadian model Gabriel Aubry.
It is Berry's third trip down the aisle; she had previously sworn off marriage following failed unions to baseball player David Justice and singer Eric Benet. It is the first marriage for Martinez.
Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez are preparing to wed in the actor's native Paris, France this weekend (12-14Jul13), according to multiple reports. The pregnant Oscar winner, her fiance and her daughter Nahla were photographed arriving at Los Angeles International Airport to board a flight on Wednesday (10Jul13), and sources tell both People.com and Eonline.com that the nuptials are imminent.
The couple became engaged in March, 2012, and will welcome its first child together later this year (13).
If the rumours are true, it will be Berry's third trip down the aisle; she had previously sworn off marriage after failed unions to baseball player David Justice and singer Eric Benet. Martinez, who previously dated Australian pop superstar Kylie Minogue, has never been married.
The ceremony is expected to be an intimate one - discussing her plans last year (12), the actress said, "I do know it will be very small. I haven't been to many weddings, but I went to one this weekend with 250 guests. I thought, 'Wow - so this is a wedding, huh?' I've never had that, nor have I wanted that."
Nahla, five, is Berry's child with her model ex, Gabriel Aubry.
Singer Jessica Simpson has been discharged from hospital after giving birth to her second child. The pop star was released from Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Hospital on Wednesday (10Jul13) - her 33rd birthday - and she returned home to celebrate her special day with family and close friends.
She has been resting at the medical centre since undergoing a scheduled Caesarean section to deliver her son, Ace Knute, on 30 June (13).
Simpson and her fiance Eric Johnson are also parents to a 14-month-old daughter, Maxwell Drew.
At last, Jessica Simpson has popped out yet another child — okay, it's only her second, but doesn't it feel like the actress/singer is always pregnant?!
The Fashion Star guru and her fiancé Eric Johnson, former NFL star, welcomed their new baby boy Ace Knute Johnson into the world on Sunday, according to CNN. This is the couple's second child; Ace has his big sis, Maxwell Drew, to play with!
Although Ace is a somewhat normal name in comparison to recent outlandish monikers — ahem, North West — we can't help but gleefully giggle at the middle name Knute, which obviously pays homage to the beloved mush polar bear, Knut. Eh, that's probably not the proper origin for the new babe's name (a far more likely theory would involve football legend Knute Rockne, considering Johnson's line of work). But come on, we wouldn't exactly blame the "A Public Affair" singer for honoring the super cuddly bear, to whom the world said a tragic goodbye back in 2011.
If this is the case, the young Simpson has a lot to live up to, at least in terms of Knut's general adorability. But if Simpson's gorgeous genes pass down, we're positive baby Ace will have no difficulties in the looks department
