Michelle Pfeiffer was thrilled to actually get the chance to act opposite Robert De Niro in new film The Family after appearing in two movies with the actor and never meeting him on set. The actress admits she was crestfallen when she realised she wouldn't be working with one of her acting heroes when she signed up for Stardust and New Year's Eve, and the two Hollywood veterans only got the chance to speak to each other at the premieres.
So, when she learned the two of them were being lined up for another movie, she made sure that this time they would be working together before signing on.
She says, "They say the third time is the charm. It took three movies to actually be onscreen with him but it finally happened. I didn't know what to expect really. We had only met on the red carpet.
"But he was just delightful in every sense of the word. I was just so relieved to see how generous he was with all of us as actors and giving, open. It was just great. Our only regret was we didn't have more scenes together!"
Chris Brown will not face any police action over claims he shoved a woman during a confrontation at a nightclub. The R&B star hit headlines in June (13) when Deanna Gines alleged he had pushed her to the ground during a night out at the Heat Ultra Lounge in Anaheim, California.
He later took to Twitter.com to tell fans, "I didn't do anything," and now it has emerged cops who investigated Gines' complaint will not pursue charges against the singer, according to TMZ.com.
Gines alleged she suffered torn ligaments in her right knee as a result of the incident.
Earlier this month (Aug13), Brown was ordered to complete an additional 1,000 hours of community service when his probation was revoked after he was charged over a hit-and-run traffic accident. He has been under a five-year probation order since assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna on the eve of the Grammy Awards in 2009.
Chris Brown has been slapped with another 1,000 hours of community labour after a judge in Los Angeles reinstated his probation on Friday (16Aug13). The solemn star didn't speak in court during the hearing, other than to agree to the terms of his new probation.
The singer will serve the remainder of his sentence removing graffiti and cleaning up highways and beaches. He must complete the 1,000 hours by 25 August, 2014 - the end of his probation period.
Brown's probation had been revoked last month after he was charged in an alleged May (13) hit-and-run traffic accident, which could have led to a probation violation and possible jail time. A prosecutor agreed to withdraw a request to rescind Brown's probation after the alleged hit-and-run charge was dismissed.
In 2009, the Kiss Kiss hitmaker was sentenced to five years' probation, 180 days of community labour and domestic violence counselling for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna on the eve of the Grammy Awards.
Media mogul Oprah Winfrey forced herself to take a step back from her heavy workload last summer (12) after realising she was on the brink of a nervous breakdown as she struggled to turn her TV network into a success. The TV icon walked away from her hit talk show in May, 2011, after 25 years at the top, to focus on the launch of the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) with bosses from cable company Discovery Communications.
However, the channel struggled to attract viewers in its first year on air and Winfrey was forced to take a serious look at reshuffling its programming line-up in order to appeal to audiences.
The superstar admits she was really feeling the pressure to turn OWN's fortunes around, but it was only when she interviewed Jason Russell, the man behind the high-profile KONY 2012 campaign, about his emotional breakdown which led to his bizarre naked rant and arrest last year (12), that she recognised she was experiencing similar mental issues.
She tells People magazine, "Jason was talking about having a nervous breakdown, and I was thinking, 'I have those symptoms'."
Winfrey's breaking point came just days later as she headed into the OWN headquarters in Los Angeles to record voice-overs for her shows: "I remember closing my eyes while I was reading. I thought, 'I cannot have another thing enter my brain.' I needed to pull back."
She confesses the harsh press criticism of her network hit her hard, and she credits her longterm partner, Stedman Graham, with helping her soldier on to overcome the disappointing start.
She says, "After 25 years of being number one, I had become accustomed to success. I didn't expect failure. I was tested and I had to dig deep. The schadenfreude (pleasure from misfortune of others) was very painful for me, because I had never experienced it.
"(Graham) was amazing. He said, 'You can't eve think about quitting. You have been in cruise control. It's gonna turn around, but you've gotta do the work.'"
Bono's actress daughter Eve Hewson is heading to the small screen after landing a role in Steven Soderbergh's upcoming TV series The Knick. The This Must Be The Place star, 22, has been cast alongside Clive Owen in the 10-part show, which is based in 1900s New York and will centre around groundbreaking surgeons and staff at Knickerbocker Hospital during a period of high mortality rates and a lack of antibiotics.
Kristen Stewart's ex-boyfriend Michael Angarano has also joined the line-up, which includes Andre Holland and Sinister's Juliet Rylance, according to Deadline.com.
Production on the programme, which will air on America's Cinemax cable network, is due to begin in late September (13).
British actress Alice Eve is dating a top American polo player, according to a U.K. report. The Star Trek Into Darkness star was first spotted with sportsman Nic Roldan at one of the Rolling Stones' shows in London's Hyde Park last month (Jul13), and they also attended Sir Mick Jagger's birthday celebrations together.
Britain's Daily Mail now reports love has blossomed for the pair.
Eve, who has been single since splitting from poet Adam O'Riordan last year (12), was also spotted cheering him on at the famous Westchester Cup polo match in England on 28 July (13).
The actress has previously dated fellow screen stars Rafe Spall and Rufus Sewell.
Charlotte Church's father was left with a fractured eye socket after he was beaten up for asking for cocaine at a New Year's Eve (01Jan13) party, a court has heard. James Church was left battered and bruised after the bathroom bust-up during a bash at Potters Bar Pool Hall in Leckwith in Cardiff, Wales.
Robert Moore had been charged with causing grievous bodily harm but he was let off the hook on Friday (02Aug13) after a jury agreed he acted in self-defence.
Moore alleged he had seen James snorting cocaine earlier in the evening before bumping into him in the men's room, where the fight kicked off and the singer's dad was hit over the head with a bottle.
The star's mum Maria took the stand to testify, telling the court, "I had never seen such a smashed-up face. He was an absolute, complete and utter mess and badly injured. When I saw his face I absolutely screamed - I went hysterical. I've never experienced anything like that before."
Moore insisted James' head injury could have been caused by a toilet door, protesting, "He came in confrontationally asking for cocaine and I said we didn't do cocaine. He came towards me to 'do' (hurt) me and I got in first. We both fell over and I fell on top of him and we were both chucking punches."
Charlotte, who was adopted by her stepfather James in 1999, did not attend the trial.
Australian actor Jay Ryan is a father. The Beauty and the Beast star's longtime girlfriend Dianna Fuemana gave birth to a daughter called Eve earlier this year (13).
Ryan, who has also starred in Aussie soap opera Neighbours, admits he kept his happy news under wraps while he got used to being a parent.
The 31 year old tells Australia's TV Week magazine, "We've kept everything pretty quiet until now, but it's changed my life and really put a lot of things in perspective.
"I never expected to be a dad at my age and she was a little bundle of surprise for me and my partner, but it makes me realize how important family really is."
Actor Neil Patrick Harris was one of the first of Sir Elton John and David Furnish's celebrity pals to learn they were set to become parents in 2010 after sharing his own baby secret with the producer. The Smurfs star had been keeping quiet that he and his partner David Burkta were going to become dads to twins via a surrogate mother in October 2010, but when he bumped into Furnish unexpectedly, he decided to open up about their plans to start a family.
Ironically, the Rocket Man and his longterm partner had also entered the same process to welcome a child of their own in December, 2010, so Harris and Furnish struck up a close bond over their shared secrets.
The actor tells U.S. talk show host Conan O'Brien, "We hadn't told anyone we were having kids and I ran into David Furnish on a trip and we just confided in one another. (I said), 'I'm surprised to tell you we're having kids through surrogacy in a couple of months.' And he kind of blanched and looked around to make sure really no one was paying attention, and he said, 'We're having a kid through surrogacy, like on Christmas Eve.' So we kinda bonded over that."
Harris and Burkta are now parents to twins Gideon and Harper, while Elton and Furnish welcomed little Elijah, a younger brother for two-year-old Zachary, in January (13).
Breaking Bad is almost at its end, but apparently Bryan Cranston wasn't ready to give up playing an evil criminal just yet. In his new thriller, Cold Comes the Night, he plays a Russian who comes looking for money a dead woman leaves behind. He doesn't have his Heisenberg hat, but he does wear a pair of large dark sunglasses because, according to IMDb, he's nearly blind.
Alice Eve also stars in the film as a single mother who's trying to look after her daughter the best she can. She works, and lives, in a motel, and she's the one who finds the money on the dead woman. But if I were Eve, I wouldn't get on Cranston's bad side. He is the one who knocks, after all.
Sony is distributing the film worldwide, but there's no American release date yet. Cold Comes the Night opens in the UK on September 20.
