Over the past decade Alec Baldwin has made two types of movies: really, really good ones (The Departed, The Aviator) and really, really bad ones (My Best Friend’s Girl, The Cat in the Hat). Now he’s signed on to co-star in Rock of Ages opposite Tom Cruise and Julianne Hough. Adam Shankman, the man responsible for Hairspray, The Pacifier and Bedtime Stories - not to mention the Rocky Horror Glee Episode - is directing the adaptation of the hit Broadway musical that uses '80's anthems to guide its narrative. Despite Shankman’s claims that if we loved Cruise in Tropic Thunder then we’ll love him in Rock of Ages, I think we know which column the film will appear in for Baldwin.
However, there is a small chance that it might not completely suck. Justin Theroux, who co-wrote the fore mentioned Cruise film, has been polishing the script with Shankman and he’s clearly capable of creating comical moments. And while Cruise will be rocking out, the Warner Bros. production will have an actual singer on board with Mary J. Blige. Rounding out the list of recognizable names in its roster is Russell Brand, who is technically still in talks to appear. So yeah, there is an outside chance that this film won’t completely blow donkey balls. Fingers crossed.
Two-time Dancing With the Stars champ Julianne Hough will be joining Tom Cruise for New Line's adaptation of the Broadway musical 'Rock of Ages,' after an audition that director Adam Shankman (Hairspray) called "surreal -- maybe the best I've ever seen."
It's another big role for the up-and-coming actress, who, after conquering both the music and dancing worlds, quickly went from an uncredited part in the first Harry Potter film to a starring role opposite Kenny Wormald as Ren McCormack in Paramount's upcoming remake of Footloose, releasing in October.
Hough will next play Sherrie, an aspiring actress from Kansas, in the film adaptation of the campy '80s rock opera (featuring the music of Journey, Joan Jett, and other '80s rock staples), which opened in Los Angeles in 2006 before coming to Broadway, where it received five Tony nominations.
'Rock of Ages' creator Chris D'Arienzo was on hand to script the adaptation with help from Tropic Thunder scribe Justin Theroux and Shankman, who will begin shooting the musical May 19 in Florida.
The country singer and former Dancing with the Stars champion is in final negotiations to star as Sherrie in the film.
Cruise will play Staci Jaxx in the movie, which will begin shooting in Florida in May (11), according to Daily Variety.
The Mission: Impossible star will play Stacee Jaxx in the film, and belt out Bon Jovi's Wanted Dead or Alive.
Matt Weaver, who co-created Rock of Ages, is thrilled with the casting: "He's got an awesome voice! He's got an awesome attitude.
"He's embracing it, he's getting into character, he's doing his research. He's ready to go back to 1986!"
Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin, Anne Hathaway and Russell Brand are also reportedly in talks to join the cast.
Hough was among the stars who attended the opening night of the hit musical's run in Los Angeles on Tuesday (15Feb11). Zac Efron, Malin Akerman, Shannon Elizabeth, Carmen Electra and Mena Suvari were among the audience.

The actress made her name in the 1987 classic Dirty Dancing, opposite Patrick Swayze, and she donned her dance shoes once again for the celebrity showdown after years away from the spotlight.
She saw off competition from actor Kyle Massey and politician Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol during the show's finale on Tuesday night (23Nov10).
Palin came third in the competition after gaining the least amount of votes, leaving Grey and her dance partner Derek Hough to battle it out with Massey for the title.
Grey scored a perfect 30 for her Viennese Waltz and a 28 for her Cha Cha - her final dances on Tuesday's show.
After winning, the star revealed she nearly pulled out of the finale after rupturing a disc in her spine on Monday night (22Nov10), prompting a brief hospital visit. Grey has been plagued with injuries throughout the competition after undergoing a string of spinal surgeries to repair torn ligaments in her neck.

She tells WENN, "I'm literally wearing a bra and underwear in some scenes and I'm worried my dad might freak out. He is very Mormon.
"He's got four girls, so, if he's not aware of a bra, I think something is wrong. But every Thanksgiving our tradition is to see movies so they'll be seeing Burlesque then! I'll be like, 'Make sure you digest that food before you go!'"
