Dutch Prince Johan Friso has died, 18 months after falling into a coma following a skiing accident in Austria. The European royal suffered severe brain damage when he was buried in an avalanche in February, 2012, and he was returned to his native Netherlands last month (Jul13) to receive care at the home of his mother, former queen Beatrix.
Prince Friso died on Monday (12Aug13) of complications from the accident. He was aged 44.
The royal had given up his position as heir to the Dutch throne in order to marry commoner Mabel Wisse Smit. They became engaged in 2003 but their wedding was not officially sanctioned by the government.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Luana and Zaria.
