Paul (Greg Kinnear) and Jessie Duncan (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) are a sweet couple dedicated to being good parents to their young son Adam (Cameron Bright). But the day after his eighth birthday Adam is killed when a car hits him. At the funeral Paul and Jessie are approached by Dr. Richard Wells (Robert De Niro) an old college professor of Jessie's who claims he may have the solution to their sorrow: He offers them a chance to clone Adam. Whatever they decide Paul and Jessie must decide quickly since Dr. Wells informs them that Adam's cells will only be viable for another 72 hours. Their judgment clouded by grief the couple takes Dr. Wells up on his offer and agrees to break off all ties with friends and family and move to a secluded town in Vermont where the Godsend Institute is located. The procedure works and Paul Jessie and their son are a perfect family again--until Adam passes the age that the original Adam died. The cloned boy becomes plagued with visions of a boy named Zachery committing horrendous crimes and eventually begins to act them out. Paul and Jessie suspect Dr. Wells is keeping something from them about Adam--and what they discover turns their world upside down.
Kinnear (Stuck on You) is well cast as the unassuming dad and husband Paul whose main motivation for going along with the procedure is to see his wife happy again. But although his character has the most substance Kinnear really isn't given much else to do here besides demand answers from everyone. As his wife Jessie Romijn-Stamos (The Punisher) gets to cry a lot and look really distressed throughout most of the film but the scope of her character pretty much stops there. The problem is that while the characters are well defined on paper--Jessie for example is a professional photographer and Paul is a high school teacher--the only side the audience gets to see of them is that of the tormented doting parents. The veteran De Niro (Analyze That) however adds some oomph to a lineup of otherwise unremarkable performances. His portrayal of Dr. Wells is perfectly balanced: A brilliant yet jittery doctor struggling with his own amorality. But Wells takes a turn in the end that is too hard to swallow going from respected researcher to candelabra-toting madman. Young Cameron Bright (The Butterfly Effect) wonderfully portrays the two Adams giving the character(s) just enough continuity without losing their individuality.
Director Nick Hamm's visuals are very overt in Godsend: Scenes before Adam's death are bathed in a soft warm palette while the years afterward in the Vermont countryside are brighter and cooler. Adam's skewed visions meanwhile are infused with contrast and graininess. But it's a pity Hamm couldn't permeate Mark Bomback's script with the same level of intensity. The story touches on the ethical moral and legal issues of cloning and does it in a simple way--through Paul and Jessie's grief--so the audience is able to relate to the subject. But what happens to the cloned boy once he passes the lifespan of the original Adam is the film's most terrifying aspect and rather than deal with it intelligently the filmmaker opted to make Dr. Wells into a genius-gone-mad and the boy a less threatening and unexciting prototype of Damien from the 1976 Omen. It would have been far more interesting to explore the consequences of the cloned Adam finding out about his true identity for example or take it a step further and explore whether the couple would be willing to go through the procedure again if the first one had failed after several years. Now this would have made Godsend more frightening at a Raelian-type level.
The Recruit wants us to believe the film's main thrust revolves around the Central Intelligence Agency's old maxim "nothing is what it seems." Had they stuck with this framework perhaps the film would have been more compelling. Instead it lapses into the expected and the implausible where you can pretty much guess exactly what's going to happen even if it really makes no sense. Our hapless protagonist James Clayton (Colin Farrell) is hustled by CIA recruiter Walter Burke (Al Pacino) who believes himself to be a "scary judge of talent" and sees James as prime CIA meat. When James hesitantly accepts the offer to come to The Farm he does so motivated less by helping his country and more by trying to find out what happened to his father who died mysteriously several years before and whom Burke alleges he knew. Once at The Farm James proves his mettle and is told again and again "it's in his blood." Ah then should we believe James' father who supposedly worked for Shell Oil really worked for the CIA as an NOC or Non-Official Cover agent one of the Agency's more prestigious--and dangerous--positions? The plot thickens. James also falls for fellow recruit Layla (Bridget Moynahan) but during an intense interrogation set-up he makes a serious error trying to save her and "washes out" of the program. Just when he thinks he's out forever James gets pulled back in by Burke who tells him all his trials and tribulations were just a test and that he is really NOC material and needed to root out a mole. Is it what it seems? Heavens no.
You'll be seeing a lot of Farrell in the coming months. Along with The Recruit this year alone he'll be in three major feature films including the upcoming comic-book actioner Daredevil; S.W.A.T. yet another feature based on a TV series; and the sniper movie Phone Booth. How has this 26-year-old Irish hunk risen so quickly in the ranks you might ask? Maybe it's because he has an uncanny ability to make the parts he plays completely believable. He slips easily into the Clayton character the quintessential CIA recruit with a daddy complex and fuels the film with the right amount of acting skills and smoldering good looks. Unfortunately his co-star the high and mighty Mr. Pacino is becoming a caricature of himself. Playing Burke is certainly no stretch for the actor and the film would not be complete without the requisite ranting scene where CIA veteran Burke tells the world all about it--voice booming words punctuated. It seems this has become the standard in any Pacino performance and frankly it's getting tiresome. Where's the quiet but powerful Michael Corleone when you need him? Moynahan (The Sum of All Fears) is somewhat bland as Clayton's love interest Layla. Word of advice: if Colin Farrell is making eyes at you go for it immediately. Don't waste any time.
For all its obviousness The Recruit does some things right. No stranger to the inner workings of our government agencies director Roger Donaldson who directed the Cuban Missile Crisis drama Thirteen Days and the Pentagon thriller No Way Out gives us access to the CIA training program or The Farm as its lovingly referred to--and it's one scary place. Obviously when making the film things had to be handled delicately as not to divulge too much so the film does take some creative liberties in showing the intense training the eager recruits have to face. That's fine with us--if we can't rely on death-defying stunts and car chases then outrageous mind games are generally good enough. But once The Recruit takes leave of The Farm the movie begins to fall apart. The inherent action set up for us in the first part--James finding out about his father the blossoming relationship between Layla and James who will be the NOC and the whole mole plot--just isn't as convincing to carry the film through its fruition. And being able to guess the next move isn't much fun either.

In 1979 the benevolent Jimmy Bones (Snoop Dogg) was the protector of his thriving neighborhood until a local drug peddler kills him after he refused to take part in a deal that would have brought crack cocaine into the community. Worried about being incriminated big bad Eddie Mac forces everyone in the room to take a stab at the legendary protector with a switchblade including a dirty cop Bones's right hand man his best friend Jeremiah and his girlfriend Pearl (Pam Grier). If everyone is guilty of the crime he rationalizes no one will squeal. Not a very smart move and--as one of the characters put it--four can keep a secret if three are dead. Twenty-two years later Jeremiah's two sons Patrick (Khalil Kain) and Bill (Merwin Mondesir) buy the brownstone where Bones was killed in hopes of converting it into a nightclub. What they end up doing however is unleashing the ghost of a vengeful Bones embodied in a wet black dog with red eyes. Bones becomes more human every time the rabid pooch eats fresh meat.
Bones is Snoop Dogg's starring film debut. While the role of Jimmy Bones is pivotal his character does not get that much screen time. What we do see through flashbacks and towards the end of the film is a laid-back and mellow Snoop. As a fly cat in the '70s with strangely poetic lines the role seems to have been tailor-made for him. In the role of Bones's psychic girlfriend Pearl Grier (Jackie Brown) is able to play a character with a range of 22 years with ease. Unfortunately there seems to be little chemistry between the two. Perhaps it's the fact that with Bones's pimp-like stature you wonder what someone like Pearl would see in him. But the most impressive and down-to-earth performance in the movie probably comes from Kain (Juice) as Patrick who remains very convincing in such a strange and surreal story line.
Director Ernest Dickerson (Tales from the Crypt Presents Demon Knight) wanted to make Bones in the style of classic horror movies with emphasis on practical and mechanical effects. While he mastered the campiness of the '80s horror genre the movie lacks the dread that predecessors like Nightmare on Elm Street had. The sins of the past revisiting the children theme is frightening enough but the movie resorts to cheap bloodletting for thrills instead. There is lots of gore and creepy shadows but the characters--Snoop's in particular--are confusing. Even though he was this legendary protector of the neighborhood we never really sympathize with him especially when he goes after his own daughter with a switchblade. The only character you end up caring about is Patrick whom you hope will escape the grips of this dark avenger. But Bones could definitely become an interesting franchise character if the story and characters were more refined.
