Former child star Alisan Porter has opened up about her addiction to alcohol. The actress, best known for her leading role in 1991's Curly Sue, has been sober for seven years but has finally decided to talk about her struggle with booze.
On Thursday (11Sep14), Porter, 33, took to her Lil' Mamas blog and penned a lengthy post about her addiction, writing, "Hi, I'm Ali, and I'm an alcoholic. Yup, bet you didn't see that one coming. Or, because you know that I'm a former child star, you totally did. Anyway, it's the truth. I've been sober since Oct 28th, 2007 and I haven't touched a drink or a drug since."
Porter went on to describe the moment she realised she needed to get sober: "I felt trapped, scared, and sad and I was ready to really go for broke or get better. So, I did what every good user does and I prayed to a god I had never believed in... and then called my mom.
"Days later I was off to treatment, just like that. For the next four years I went to meetings, worked the steps, got a sponsor, found a god of my own understanding, prayed, meditated and basically grew up. Growing pains were inevitable, I felt them often but I continued on the path because unlike my old ways, this way was working."
After becoming sober, Porter married her longtime boyfriend Brian Autenrieth in 2012 and they are parents to two children, Mason, two, and four month old Aria Sage.
She tells People magazine she decided to open up about her alcoholism in the hope of helping others, adding, "I've waited a long time to write about my sobriety: it's a touchy subject. Also, you never know when you're going to wake up and realize the disease won. I've been profoundly affected by so many losses of late and if I can help just one person, one former child actor or especially one mother, this will be worth it."
The Curly Sue star delivered baby boy Mason Blase Autenrieth, who weighed in at seven pounds (3.2 kilograms).
She kept her Twitter.com followers updated before going into labour, writing, "Hour 16. No baby. He's prob (probably) changing his outfit 400 times like his mother... Mason is tardy for the party."
The new arrival is the first child for Porter and her husband Brian Autenrieth, who she married in March (12).
The Curly Sue actress was joined by 50 guests, including her mum Laura Weiner and her younger sister Jordana, at the backyard bash in Agoura Hills.
She tells People.com, "It was a perfect day. I couldn't have imagined anything more beautiful. There was so much love and I can't wait for everyone to share it with our son!"
Porter and her husband Brian Autenrieth, who wed in March (12), are due to welcome their first child together in July (12) and they've already picked out the tot's name - they plan to call him Mason.
"So many Braxton Hicks. I've drank. I've bathed. I've excercise (sic) balled. I've swam. Can't catch a break. Chest gets tight! ready to push!" Former child star Alisan Porter is eager for her baby to arrive.
The Curly Sue actress, who is expecting her first child this summer (12), wed her partner Brian Autenrieth on Saturday (10Mar12).
The couple exchanged vows in front of 100 guests at a ranch in the mountains of Santa Monica and she later took to her Twitter.com page to post photos of herself in her bridal gown.
She tweeted, "I'm married!!!!!!"
Porter also told People.com, "We've been friends for 13 years and it's the most incredible feeling to know you're marrying your best friend."
The actress, best known for playing the title role in hit 1991 comedy Curly Sue, is expecting her first child, due in the summer (12).
