O.J. Simpson was acting on the advice of his former lawyer in 2007 when he was arrested for kidnapping and armed robbery as he attempted to retrieve his sports memorabilia from a Las Vegas hotel room, a court has heard. The former footballer-turned-actor made the claim in Clark County District Court on Wednesday (15May13) as part of his bid for an appeal against his 2008 conviction for masterminding the heist on two memorabilia dealers.
He alleges his then-attorney, Yale Galanter, was incompetent and is seeking a retrial to overturn the nine to 33 year sentence he is currently serving for the crimes.
Simpson, who did not testify in his original case, took the witness stand on Wednesday to share his side of the story, revealing that he had sought legal advice from Galanter before taking action to make sure that he was not breaking any laws.
He explained, "It was my stuff. I followed what I thought was the law. My lawyer told me I couldn't break into a guy's room. I didn't break into anybody's room. I didn't try to muscle the guys. The guys had my stuff, even though they claimed they didn't steal it."
Simpson struggled to maintain his composure as he recalled the items that he thought had been illegally taken from him: "Look at this stuff. Some of the stuff I didn't really realise was gone. These were things I hadn't seen in 10 years. You know, you get a little emotional about it."
Simpson's appearance on the witness stand came a day after Galanter's former co-counsel, Gabriel Grasso, admitted they lacked the funds to launch a comprehensive defence case against the charges their client faced.
Grasso also claimed that Galanter had mentioned plans to discuss a possible plea deal with Simpson - but the chat never took place and their infamous defendant had no idea prosecutors had made him any kind of offer.
The case continues.
Actress Jacqueline Brookes has lost her battle with cancer at the age of 82. She died of lymphoma in Manhattan on 26 April (13), according to the New York Times.
Born in New Jersey, she graduated from Iowa University and studied for two years at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.
Brookes first found fame on stage in 1963 after winning an Obie Award for her Off-Broadway performance in Six Characters in Search of an Author and she later starred in a number of popular U.S. TV shows, such as Miami Vice, Law & Order, and As the World Turns.
Her other credits include movie roles in The Gambler alongside James Caan, Losing Isaiah with Halle Berry and The Naked Gun 2 ½: The Smell of Fear, featuring Priscilla Presley and O.J. Simpson.
In 1974 she began teaching at the Circle in the Square Theater School in New York, where she worked until her death.
O.J. Simpson has been given a big boost as he fights for a retrial after his former lawyer's co-counsel revealed in court that they lacked the funds to launch a comprehensive defence case against the kidnapping and armed robbery conviction he is currently serving time for. The former sportsman-turned-actor is challenging the nine to 33 year sentence he received following his 2008 conviction for masterminding a heist on two sports memorabilia dealers' hotel room in Las Vegas in 2007.
He previously lost an appeal against his conviction, but filed new legal papers last year (12) requesting a retrial over allegations his former lawyer, Yale Galanter, was incompetent.
The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult star appeared in Nevada's Clark County District Court on Monday (13May13) for the start of a five-day hearing to argue his case, and on Tuesday (14May13), the court heard surprising testimony from Galanter's former pal and colleague, Gabriel Grasso.
The witness claimed that Galanter had often complained about the financial shortfall, which reportedly prevented him from hiring experts to analyze a key audio recording from the night of the big heist - evidence which Grasso himself confessed to reviewing while attending his son's soccer game.
During the testimony, Grasso also alleged that Galanter had mentioned plans to discuss a possible plea deal with Simpson - but the chat never took place and their infamous defendant had no idea prosecutors had made him any kind of offer.
Simpson, who appeared to be hiding a heavier frame under his blue jumpsuit, is expected to take the witness stand on Friday (17May13).
Under the terms of his current sentence, the 65 year old won't qualify for parole until 2018.
The case continues.
Imprisoned sportsman-turned-actor O.J. Simpson will take the stand in a Las Vegas court this week (begs13May13) in a bid to convince a judge to grant him a retrial over his conviction for kidnapping and armed robbery. The former American footballer was sentenced to nine to 33 years behind bars following his 2008 conviction for masterminding a heist on two sports memorabilia dealers' hotel room in Sin City in 2007.
He previously lost an appeal against his conviction, but filed new legal papers last year (12) requesting a retrial over allegations he was badly represented by his former Florida-based lawyer, Yale Galanter.
Simpson, 65, will appear in Clark County District Court on Monday (13May13) for the start of a five-day hearing to argue his case, in which the Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult star is expected to take the stand to testify against his ex-legal team.
Olympic sailor Andrew Simpson has died while training to compete in this year's America's Cup. The gold medallist drowned in San Francisco Bay, off the coast of California, after his catamaran capsized on Thursday (09May13).
San Francisco Fire Department officials have confirmed the Brit is dead and a teammate was left with serious injuries.
Both men were brought ashore and taken to the St. Francis Yacht Club, where paramedics performed CPR on Simpson. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
It is not clear what caused the Artemis Racing catamaran to capsize.
The 34th annual America's Cup begins in September (13).
Fall Out Boy rocker Pete Wentz was so paranoid at the height of his recent prescription drug hell he was convinced spies had bugged his home. The bassist tells the new issue of Rolling Stone magazine that his drug problems began in 2009 when Fall Out Boy went on hiatus and he started taking prescription pills Xanax and Klonopin to treat anxiety.
He tells the publication, "I was probably physically and mentally addicted. It started from insomnia and anxiety from flying, then it spiralled."
And things really took a turn for the worse when he split from his wife Ashlee Simpson two years later: "I felt like a loser already. I'd basically gone from being the guy in Fall Out Boy to being the guy, who, like, hangs out all day. I didn't see how I'd ever come out on the other side.
"I was scared of everything. I thought there were always people listening to me... I had my house searched for bugs. It was crazy."
Therapy sessions and his four-year-old son, Bronx, helped Wentz clean up. He adds, "You're up in the morning, and you have to really be there. It's not like getting up for a radio interview. In some ways, that was super helpful for my soul."
Singer Nick Lachey had a laugh at the expense of his ex-wife Jessica Simpson's father on Tuesday (07May13) as he poked fun at rumours his former father-in-law has 'come out' as gay. The 98 Degrees star was a guest on U.S. talk show Watch What Happens Live with his bandmate and brother, Drew, when he was quizzed about his relationship with the Simpson family.
Lachey, who is now married to TV personality Vanessa Minnillo, admitted he lost touch with the singer/actress two years after their 2005 divorce, saying, "It's been years (since I've talked to Simpson). Years. Honestly, probably six years. It was like another lifetime ago."
He then took part in a question-and-answer game with host Andy Cohen and was quizzed about his ex-father-in-law, Joe Simpson, who is in the midst of a divorce from Jessica's mum Tina.
Asked what the best thing was about cutting ties with the former minister, Lachey quipped, "I don't have to play grab a** under the table on Easter Sunday!"
He quickly realised he might have landed himself in trouble after Cohen laughed and said, "That's very funny", prompting Lachey to reply, "It may not be tomorrow, but it is tonight."
Rumours about the patriarch's sexuality began surfacing last year (12) when Tina filed to end their 34-year marriage, but the Simpson family has yet to comment on the claims.
Kim Kardashian's brother has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanour battery and petty theft charges following an altercation with a photographer outside a West Hollywood gym. Rob Kardashian appeared in a Beverly Hills courtroom on Wednesday morning (08May13) to address counts he lashed out at a snapper, identified as Kassandra Perez, after spotting her taking shots of him in a parking lot.
She claims he struck her, grabbed her camera and ripped out the memory card.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Marsha Revel allowed the reality TV star to walk free after his plea, despite the objections of prosecutors, who had asked that his bail be set at $21,000 (£13,500).
Ironically, Kardashian was represented in court on Wednesday by Robert Shapiro, the lawyer who teamed up with his late father to defend O.J. Simpson in the fallen sporting superstar's 1990s murder trial.
Believe it or not, this photo of Kim Kardashian is helping us as a society. While vacationing (or creating drama for Keeping Up With the Kardashians) in Greece, photogs captured Kimmie sporting her boldest look yet: a pregnant and proud beach babe. And while there are still some fans hitting Twitter and every comment section they can find to protest what the rest of us can see as plain as day, Kardashian is embracing her pregnancy in a natural, beautiful way by showing the public what a real pregnant woman looks like.
Kardashian has been inching towards this complete and total acceptance of her mother-to-be shape in the wake of a vicious tirade of fat-shaming that started from the moment baby Kimye began to show. Cloaked under the guise of Kim's poor fashion choices, her growing size became almost more relevant than the fact that she and Kanye West might possibly be popping out the most important child in the history of pop culture (that is, until Jay-Z and Beyonce have their second baby). At first, Kardashian was sheepish about her new shape, focusing on dieting while with child and praising outfits for reasons like "I hardly look pregnant! lol." Then, in April, Kardashian rebelled against the negative chatter, posting a bare baby bump with the caption "baby love" and slowly started to look on her new shape with renewed positivity.
Cut to May and we find Kardashian wearing a form-fitting gown at the 2013 Met Gala (even if its pattern was a little more Mrs. Doubtfire than we would have liked), caressing her pregnant belly like a proud mama-to-be, and strolling nearly nude down picturesque Mediterranean beaches, without a care in the world about the inevitable nearly-nude paparazzi pictures. It's enough to make even the biggest Kardashian detractors smile.
Kimmie may not be the best model for the American dream. She may not be the classiest celebrity on our roster of unyielding obsessions. But she is teaching us the very important lesson that, try as they might, celebs like Hilary Duff and Jessica Simpson before her weren't quite able to promote: Pregnant women gain weight and change shape, and that's a wonderful, natural thing. Kardashian, for all her faults, is a beautiful woman now and before her pregnancy, and maybe, by inadvertently creating such a robust conversation surrounding the way Hollywood talks about pregnant women, this polarizing reality star might actually be making a difference in a real way.
