Bands that tour together go through all kinds of ups and downs. Let's face it - if you spend more time with your bandmates than your own family for good amounts of time, people are going to get on each other's nerves. It's a given. Especially since there tend to be multiple strong artistic personalities all vying for supremacy and there will be inevitable clashes. There's screaming, yelling and possible flying projectiles. Then people usually suck it up and move on. These bands couldn't get past those conflicts and found themselves breaking up, depriving fans of more albums together. Here's five examples of world-known groups who fractured.
There really hasn't been a phenomenon as gigantic as the Fab Four were when they first hit the music scene in the sixties. The mere sight of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison or Ringo Starr either in person or on TV could send fans into fits of gleeful shrieking. After unparalleled success for years, the band broke up in 1970, a decade after its creation. There were many causes, not one singular event. They stopped touring four years before the split and their manager died in 1967, but the final straw was the collapse of their shared company Apple Corps, Ltd. and an ensuing intra-band legal battle over who should look after their business affairs, ruthless Rolling Stones manager Allen Klein or McCartney's new father-in-law Lee Eastman. Solo careers also contributed to the demise. After a sustained period of brilliance, the band was no more, Sadly, there will never be any reunion, with the shooting of Lennon in 1980 and Harrison's death from cancer in '01.
Another supergroup that formed not too long after The Beatles. After seeing Syd Barrett, their guitarist, leave from too much drug use, they brought in a new guitarist, David Gilmour, who quickly proved himself as one of the best in the business. Soon there was growing tension between Gilmour and frontman Roger Waters, who wanted to control all aspects of the band. First they fired Rick Wright, their keyboard player - he doesn't appear on the last Waters/Gilmour Floyd album, The Final Cut. They then split and there was a huge fight about the Pink Floyd band name. Gilmour reunited with Wright and drummer Nick Mason to make two more albums (though when they were touring to promote the first non-Waters album, they had to have lawyers on call on every city so they could play any songs that Gilmour had co-written with Waters). There has been a recent thawing in the ice, as Gilmour and Waters have played together at several concerts, including the legendary guitarist making an unannounced appearance during Waters' The Wall tour. It's a shame that fans were deprived for decades of the collaboration, though and Wright is now dead, so we will never see a full Pink Floyd again.
The Police burst onto the scene in 1978 with the hit song 'Roxanne.' There was a period of time after that where Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland could lay claim to being in the biggest rock band in the world. But the group was so tired of each other after the end of the Synchronicity Tour in 1984 that they split up. They briefly reunited to do another version of 'Don't Stand So Close To Me', but they had to use a drum machine in place of Copeland, since he had broken his collarbone. It was an argument over drum machines that turned out to be the final straw that led to the group's undoing. Sting wanted to use an incredibly complicated one and Copeland used another. Copeland actually credited his drum machine as the inspiration to become a composer. The band reunited for a concert tour but they haven't done any new studio albums. Sting actually just released another solo album, further dashing any more reunion hopes.
This band serves as a warning for those groups that include family members. The fallout is Liam and Noel Gallagher, two brothers, who now despise one another to the point that one of them would turn down tens of millions of dollars to reunite. There was a lot of success early on with the the release of their first album, Definitely Maybe in 1993. They had an even bigger hit in their next album, (What's The Story) Morning Glory? Sadly, there were continual conflicts amongst themselves and various bandmembers kept quitting. Finally, after the birth of his son and a scary incident involving a fan running onstage and assaulting him, Noel got so fed up with Liam (a fight where Liam broke his guitar didn't help) that he quit the band in 2009, replete with a dramatic announcement on the band's website. So that's where we are, and it looks like nothing's going to break the (Wonder)wall between them.
Guns N' Roses
While the group has never actually 'broken up' in the sense that the other four have, it's a far cry from the lineup that was featured in Appetite For Destruction. The only constant has been lead singer Axl Rose. The first to go was Izzy Stradlin, who had problems with how Rose ran the band and his less-than-stellar treatment of fans. He also found it hard to be sober among a group of hard-partying rockers. After that began a steady trickle of band members leaving, including guitar legend Slash, until it was Rose with a whole new band. There was so much bad blood that Axl Rose refused to attend the '12 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions if it meant being in the same room as the other orignal members. It's a shame, since this current incarnation is a pale shadow of the powerhouse that took the world by storm in the late '80s.

With the release of World War Z, this summer is all about zombies. But going to the movies isn't the only way to experience the culture of the undead — in fact, you don't even have to leave the comfort of your living room. On Wednesday night's episode of America's Got Talent, six-year-old singer Aaralyn O'Neil and her nine-year-old brother Isaiah ("Izzy") shocked viewers with their original song "Zombie Skin."
When the youthful sibling duo walked onto the stage, the judges and audience let out a collective "aww." Aaralyn looked the picture of innocence in her polka dot party dress and bright pink tights. Judge Howard Stern compared them to the Partridige Family and said he couldn't wait to hear their "sweet music." Little did anyone suspect how deceiving appearances could be.
With Izzy on the drums, Aaralyn opened her mouth to sing their original song...and out came the appalling sound of screamo metal. Audience members were quite literally jolted into their seats, and Heidi Klum looked terrified by the screaming voice of the angelic-looking child, as she sang "Everyone listen to me. I am a zombie." Judge Melanie Brown summed it up best when she said, "Scary Spice is officially scared."
With the exception of Mel B, the judges rather enjoyed the shocking experience, and the adorable metal kids made it through to the Las Vegas round (although Heidi Klum was set on meeting their parents, demanding to know, "What is going on in your house?"). We are similarly intrigued and look forward to hearing a few more original songs from Aaralyn & Izzy.

Two never-before-seen Bob Dylan lyric sheets are hitting the auction block to raise money for a folk music store in Sweden. The legendary singer typed up the lyrics to Go Away You Bomb and I Want That Bomb in 1963 for Izzy Young, who owned the Folklore Center in Greenwich Village in New York City.
Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine, Young explains, "I asked everyone I knew to write a song about the nuclear bomb. Bob Dylan came in literally the next day and handed these to me."
Young, who moved to Sweden in the 1970s, has kept the anti-nuclear bomb songs in his private collection for 50 years, but he is now selling the sheets off to help cover costs for the Folklore Centrum store he runs in Stockholm.
He adds, "My daughter, who is 39, came to me and said, 'Papa, I'm sick of you surviving by miracles.' You have to sell that Bob Dylan song.' She convinced me I had to, and she moved it to a bank vault for me. It's going to be the first time in my life I'll have real money."
The lyrics are expected to pull in as much as $56,000 (£35,000) when they go under the hammer at Christie's auction house in London next month (Jun13).
At the moment there are few greater clichés in the media than the freaking out single woman on the cusp of 30. Of course clichés are clichés for a reason worth exploring even through the lens of just one or two women as in Lola Versus. Unfortunately while the intention behind Lola Versus isn't that we should all be happily married by the age of 30 it still fits into the same rubric of all those "Why You're Not Married" books.
Lola (Greta Gerwig) has a gorgeous fiancé Luke (Joel Kinnaman) and they live in a giant loft together the kind of dreamy NYC real estate that seems to exist primarily in the movies. Just as they're planning their gluten-free wedding cake with a non-GMO rice milk-based frosting Luke dumps her. It's cruelly sudden — although Luke isn't a cruel man. Lola finds little comfort in the acerbic wit of her best friend the eternally single Alice (Zoe Lister-Jones) who is probably delighted to see her perfectly blonde best friend taken down a peg and into the murky world of New York coupling. Lola and Luke share a best friend Henry (Hamish Linklater) a messy-haired rumpled sweetheart who is kind and safe and the inevitable shelter for Lola's fallout. Her parents well-meaning and well-to-do hippie types feed her kombucha and try to figure out their iPads and give her irrelevant advice.
Lola Versus is slippery. Its tone careens between broad TV comedy and earnest dramedy almost as if Alice is in charge of the dirty zingers and Lola's job is to make supposedly introspective statements. Alice's vulgar non-sequiturs are tossed off without much relish and Lola's dialogue comes off too often as expository and plaintive. We don't need Lola to tell Henry "I'm vulnerable I'm not myself I'm easily persuaded" or "I'm slutty but I'm a good person!" (Which is by the way an asinine statement to make. One might even say she's not even that "slutty " she's just making dumb decisions that hurt those around her just as much as she's hurting herself.)
We know that she's a mess — that's the point of the story! It's not so much that a particularly acerbic woman wouldn't say to her best friend "Find your spirit animal and ride it until its d**k falls off " but that she wouldn't say it in the context of this movie. It's from some other movie over there one where everyone is as snarky and bitter as Alice. You can't have your black-hearted comedy and your introspective yoga classes. Is it really a stride forward for feminism that the clueless single woman has taken the place of the stoner man-child in media today? When Lola tells Luke "I'm taken by myself. I've gotta just do me for a while " it's true. But it doesn't sound true and it doesn't feel true.
In one scene Lola stumbles on the sidewalk and falls to the ground. No one asks her if she's okay or needs help; she simply gets up on her own and goes on her way. It's a moment that has happened to so many people. It's humiliating and so very public but of course you just gotta pick yourself up and get where you're going. In this movie it's a head-smackingly obvious metaphor. In one of the biggest missteps of the movie Jay Pharoah plays a bartender that makes the occasional joke while Lola is waiting tables at her mom's restaurant. His big line at the end is "And I'm your friend who's black!" It would have been better to leave his entire character on the cutting room floor than attempt such a half-hearted wink at the audience.
Lister-Jones and director Daryl Wein co-wrote the screenplay for Lola Versus as they did with 2009's Breaking Upwards. Both films deal with the ins and outs of their own romantic relationship in one way or another. Breaking Upwards a micro-budget indie about a rough patch in their relationship was much more successful in tone and direction. Lola Versus has its seeds in Lister-Jones' experience as a single woman in New York and is a little bit farther removed from their experiences. Lola Versus feels like a wasted opportunity. Relatively speaking there are so few movies getting made with a female writer or co-writer that it almost feels like a betrayal to see such a tone-deaf portrayal of women onscreen. What makes it even more disappointing is how smart and likable everyone involved is and knowing that they could have made a better movie.
On Saturday, April 14, the 27th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony took place, welcoming iconic musicians such as the Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Donovan. However, as the public is well aware, there was one artist who rejected his invitation into the Hall of Fame this year: Guns N' Roses vocalist Axl Rose, who is now releasing an apology to fans.
The singer/songwriter published an explanation for his refusal to accept a place in the Cleveland institution last week. (You can read the full letter here.) Rose's decision was met with mixed reactions; some fans supported Rose's rationale, while some were upset by his behavior. Rose has since published a second letter on the Guns N' Roses website, which read:
"To: Cleveland, Ohio, Guns N' Roses Fans and everyone who's shown support for my decision regarding the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
I seriously didn't plan on or expect the overwhelmingly positive response and public support for my decision regarding the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. With such a generous outpouring of solidarity from fans, media outlets, writers and other artists, I'm truly humbled, blown away and unbelievably relieved! To be honest, I thought it would go the other way and was just hoping to weather the storm. As I said, I sincerely didn't want to disappoint anyone. It gets old being the outlaw even if "it's only rock and roll".
It took a lot of focus and soul searching to be sincere and informative while making a genuine effort to be somewhat diplomatic. We made, what I feel, are real efforts to learn about the Hall and the Board, spoke as I said with the president and various members, and though I inducted Elton John and Bernie Taupin in '94 saying something to the effect of "I'm learning what the Hall's about..."
I still don't exactly know or understand what the Hall is or how or why it makes money, where the money goes, who chooses the voters and why anyone or this board decides who, out of all the artists in the world that have contributed to this genre, officially "rock" enough to be in the Hall?
This isn't an attack. These are genuine issues I don't have enough verified information on to have more than rough ideas. Certainly not enough information to make any judgments about.
I would like to apologize to Cleveland, Ohio for not apologizing to them beforehand for not attending [the ceremony] in their city. I think they know how much I genuinely love performing there. Cleveland does in fact Rock!!
Now that the smoke's cleared a little, any desperate, misguided attacks have been just that, a pathetic stab at gossip, some lame vindictiveness, the usual entitlement crap, he's obsessed, crazy, volatile, a hater. I once bought a homeless woman a slice of pizza who yelled at me she wanted soup. We got her the soup. You can get your own.
Again: HUGE thanks to the fans and to everyone for the incredible public support. My congratulations to the other artists inducted. And my apologies to the city and people of Cleveland, Ohio. I hope you'll forgive me and we hope to see you again soon!

As far as anti-establishment rebellion goes, this has got to be one of the most polite instances of the sort. The remaining original Guns N' Roses band members — Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagin and Steven Adler — accepted the induction into the Hall of Fame and performed at the ceremony on April 14. Rose continues to perform with the present incarnation of Guns N' Roses. That is, if you can recognize him.
