It was third time lucky for Denzel Washington as the Hollywood actor had to ask his wife to marry him three times before she said yes. The Flight star has been married to Pauletta, the mother of his four children, for 30 years but was forced to get down on one knee on three separate occasions before she would agree to wed.
Washington himself forgot the two previous refusals and had to be reminded by his wife, who joked that age was getting the better of his memory.
Speaking to Access Hollywood at the premiere of the actor's latest movie 2 Guns in New York on Monday (29Jul13), Pauletta declared, "It was three times. I know with age sometimes things (go), the mind."
Washington added, "Why was it twice?…Why would I have to ask again?" and when informed by his wife that she turned him down twice he added, "You heard it here first. She turned me down, she said no. And since it was three times, that means she turned me down twice."
2 Guns, which also stars Mark Wahlberg, opens in cinemas across the U.S. on Friday (02Aug13).
A representative for Denzel Washington has shut down reports the actor is separating from his wife of 30 years. Sources have told America's Star magazine the Training Day star and his partner Pauletta Pearson were on the verge of a divorce amid an alleged infidelity scandal, claiming the couple recently spent its wedding anniversary on opposite sides of the U.S.
An insider told the publication, "She (Pearson) moved to New York to contemplate if she's ready to end the marriage for good."
Now a spokesperson for the Oscar winner has spoken out to set the record straight and deny claims the pair is splitting, telling GossipCop.com, "They are not divorcing, not separating."
Denzel Washington played the part of a proud dad on Monday (13May13) as he watched his son Malcolm graduate from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The Flight star, his wife Pauletta and members of the family beamed as the 22 year old celebrated at the 257th commencement ceremony.
Malcolm excelled at the Ivy League school, playing basketball and earning a degree in film studies.
The Oscar winner has revealed 25-year-old Katia, his daughter with wife Pauletta Pearson, has followed him into the movie business, but she is working behind the scenes as a production assistant.
However, Katia looks set for success as she has been given her big break by Kill Bill director Tarantino.
Washington says, "My oldest (sic) daughter has been working with Quentin Tarantino as a production assistant in the editing room."
The Flight star was spotted on the beach on 28 December (12) with his wife of 29 years.
The Washingtons later boarded a yacht for an afternoon at sea and they also hit an island restaurant to celebrate in style.
It's not known if the couple will be among the guests attending Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's New Year's Eve party on St. Barts.
The Caribbean paradise has become a star-studded hotspot this winter - Kate Moss, Russell Simmons, model Stephanie Seymour and Sean 'Diddy' Combs have all been spotted there in recent days and Naomi Campbell and movie mogul Harvey Weinstein are expected to fly in for the big New Year's Eve bash on Monday (31Dec12). Kings of Leon will reportedly headline the party.
"The trumpet was killin' her, just killin' her!" Denzel Washington's trumpet sessions - as he prepared to play Bleek Gilliam in 1990 movie Mo' Better Blues - were painful for his wife Pauletta, a former concert pianist.
The actor, who won Oscars in 1989 and 2001, is among the Hollywood elite who decide the winners at Tinseltown's biggest prizegiving as a member of the Academy.
However, Washington admits his partner Pauletta is the one with the vote because she watches all the hotly-tipped movies and gives him her opinion.
He says, "Actually, my wife watches all of the movies. You know they send you the DVDs and she watches them all.
"So she actually does the voting, I'll be honest with you. I watch some of them but she watches them all. She's like, 'Oh no, no, no you don't want to put that one down.'"
The Sound of Music star received the Prince Rainier III Award at the New York event, and her The Princess Diaries co-star Anne Hathaway looked on as she accepted the accolade.
As part of her prize, Andrews was also given a $25,000 (£15,625) grant, which will benefit children's charities.
The 76 year old says, "I'm very honoured to be given an award this evening and it's a fabulous opportunity to speak about the importance of the arts and it being a big, big part of our culture because without it we'd be a very sorry place indeed."
Past recipients of the prize have included Denzel Washington and his wife Pauletta, Glenn Close, and Star Wars creator George Lucas.
The Sound of Music star will receive the Prince Rainier III Award in New York on 1 November (11).
Past recipients have included Denzel Washington and his wife Pauletta, Glenn Close and Star Wars creator George Lucas.

John David Washington is a running back for the Sacramento Mountain Lions and his parents recently flew out to California from New York to catch him in action.
But his mum Pauletta became too caught up in the action and ran down from the stands to the sidelines as the 26 year old scored a touchdown during the game - unwittingly standing in the path of a charging teammate.
Pauletta was left lying faced down on the field after the clash, but she managed to leap back to her feet to continue celebrating her son's achievement.
Showing off video footage of the incident to U.S. TV viewers during an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman on Tuesday (09Nov10), the Training Day star laughed off the mishap and assured the audience his wife was just fine.
Explaining the run down, Washington said, "You'll see his mum get clobbered, in the lower corner, watch, boom! A woman gets hit down there... He scores a touchdown but his mother ran down the field with him. His mother, she doesn't see (player number) 53 coming, boom!
"(But) she jumped up faster than the guy did. She loves her son so much, she didn't see the guy coming, all she could see was her baby! ...And she's fine. She bounced right up. I said you should have stood over him and taunted him, 'You little punk!'"
