HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 10, 2000 -- The crime spree is over. "The Sopranos" will have to kiss someone else's ring -- namely, the big boss man's, the president of the United States of TV America. "The West Wing" was named Best Drama Series at the 52nd Annual Emmy Awards, capping a night wherein the political drama dominated, save for one major setback when James Gandolfini of "The Sopranos" bested Martin Sheen in the competition for Best Actor in a Drama Series. "I think the Academy has an affinity for

HOLLYWOOD, May 23, 2000 -- Last week in TV ratings land, NBC threw in the kitchen sink with three hours of "Must-See" season finales and owned the top of the Top 10. Unfortunately, there are still seven days in a week, and NBC has just one sink. Thus, ABC, still running on high-octane Regis fuel, held on to win the overall week -- again. Here now, for your edification and amusement, the annotated primetime Top 10 rankings for the week of May 15-21, according to the good people at Nielsen Media

HOLLYWOOD, May 16, 2000 -- We're down to the wire in the May sweeps, and NBC really tightened this race up last week with yet another monster Thursday. With the Must See season finale triple-header coming this Thursday, do we smell a potential ABC upset in the offing? We certainly hope so. Because if that smell isn't "upset," then it must be us. And frankly, it's getting pretty unpleasant in here. But we digress. Here now is an annotated look at the Top 10 primetime shows for the TV week ended

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 16, 2000 -- First, an apology. Because "Fail Safe" was presented "live" last Sunday, and because the ending was a closely kept secret, and because we never bothered to actually see the original movie on which it was based, we just had no idea. If this column was responsible in any way for your sitting through an hour and a half of nail-biting suspense, only to get to the part where the president of the United States decides that dropping an atomic bomb on New York Ci

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 4, 2000 -- Remember when the Who said, "Meet the new boss! Same as the old boss!" And then Keith Moon kicked in his drum set just before it exploded (and Pete Townsend smashed his guitar just before losing most of his hearing)? Isn't it funny how relevant something like that can be today? Anyway, here's an annotated list of the Top 10 primetime shows for the TV week ending April 2, according to the fine folks at Nielsen Media Research. (Each rating point equals a lit

SANTA MONICA, Calif. March 29, 2000 -- Good news, depending on your love and/tolerance for "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Bicentennial Man": Chris Columbus has been signed to direct "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." In a bit of even better news, this means there's no way Columbus will possibly have time to ruin, er, helm either the planned "Spider-man" flick or the "Planet of the Apes" remake -- two movies the "Nine Months" auteur had been attached to in recent years. (The "Apes" gig is done deal
