Aamir Khan's new action movie Dhoom 3 has shattered Bollywood box office records by scoring the biggest opening ever for an Indian film worldwide. The film grossed a total of $28.11 million (£18.74 million) in its debut weekend (20-22Dec13), earning $16.7 million (£11.13 million) in India alone, setting a new record.
It also made history in North America and Australia, while in the U.K., Dhoom 3 landed the highest non-festival/holiday opening for a Bollywood film with a $1.45 million (£966,670) gross, according to production company Yash Raj Films.
The latest installment of the Dhoom franchise stars Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra, reprising their roles as Indian cops, in pursuit of an illusionist, played by Khan, and his love interest Katrina Kaif.
Bollywood star Katrina Kaif has dismissed rumours suggesting she is engaged to fellow actor Ranbir Kapoor. Reports of an engagement began circulating after the actor's cousin, Kareena Kapoor, addressed Kaif as her sister-in-law during an appearance on Indian TV show, Koffee With Karan, earlier this month (Dec13).
However, the Dhoom 3 beauty has now cleared up the claims, insisting Kapoor's comments were made in jest.
She tells The Hindustan Times, "She's (Kapoor) a nice person, and has always been sweet and kind to me, and I respect her as an actor. But there was no truth to what she said; she was obviously joking. There's no marriage happening, no-one has even asked me."
She adds, "I'm a private person. And I have a certain way in which I protect myself. I don't openly wear my feelings. But I take all this in good humour. From the beginning, with any media hype or speculation, I've never taken any offence. It's part and parcel of the industry. "
Kaif, who had previously dated Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, has been romantically linked to Ranbir Kapoor since earlier this year (13), but the stars have yet to comment on their relationship publicly.
Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan is to undergo brain surgery after sustaining an injury on set while filming his latest movie Bang Bang. The actor was admitted to the Hunduja hospital in Mumbai, India on Sunday (07July13) to have an operation to remove a clot which developed after he hit his head while shooting the film, opposite Katrina Kaif, two months ago.
Roshan, 39, alerted fans to his impending surgery with a post on his Facebook.com page which reads, "We all know that we create a life of joy using the power of our mind. I've had the privilege of creating wonders with this amazing gift given to us called the brain.
"Occasionally one must look within and realise its value. It gives us the power to see, hear, touch, smell and taste, it allows us to conquer fear and create courage to do things we never imagined. Maybe it's time for me to feel the power literally.
"I am going to go through brain surgery today and want you to know that I am going in with absolute power to recover fast. My thanks to all of you for using the power of your mind to contribute to my life."
He later added, "Minor brain surgery to remove blood clot (chronic subdural haematoma). Should be rock n rolling by evening! U (you) guys have a great day too! Supersonic!!"
The Indian star hit the headlines earlier this week (begs24Jan11) after representatives for the country's tax authorities confirmed officials had raided the offices and homes of Kaif and her peer Priyanka Chopra, in addition to a number of other top Bollywood names.
Tax department director-general D.P. Gaur confirmed on Monday (24Jan11) that properties belonging to the actresses were "being searched and whatever materials are procured will be recorded for further action", but refused to go into further detail.
However, a "disturbed" Kaif has hit out at the claims and she is adamant all her tax payments are up-to-date.
A statement issued by her accountants adds: "Katrina is fully co-operating with the (tax) department, whom she holds in high regard."
Kaif is said to earn $670,000 (£446,670) per film.
The pair has become two of biggest names in Bollywood in recent years, but their financial dealings have come under scrutiny by the country's income tax department.
Tax department director-general D.P. Gaur confirmed on Monday (24Jan11) that properties belonging to the actresses were "being searched and whatever materials are procured will be recorded for further action".
The representative refused to go into further detail about the reasons for the investigation, adding, "We don't discuss these things but all I can say is that raids are on."
Annes Bazmee will direct the film, which is expected to go before cameras early next year (10).
Abhishek Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Sanjay Dutt will star in the remake, which will be set in India and feature Hindustani dialogue.
Starred alongside former boyfriend Salman Khan in "Ek Tha Tiger," which became the second highest grossing Bollywood film of all time
Despite being a British citizen, Katrina Kaif has broken numerous barriers to become a certified Bollywood movie star. Kaif drew attention for playing the beautiful love interest in various action films early on in her career, but soon earned a big enough following to be featured as the female lead in films like the 2009 thriller "New York," as well as the coming-of-age drama "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" (2011). In 2012 she appeared alongside Indian heartthrob and former boyfriend Salman Khan in the action film, "Ek Tha Tiger," which became the second highest grossing movie in Bollywood history, earning Kaif an unprecedented level of national exposure as well as superstar status for the first time in her career.
The daughter of a British mother and Indian father, Katrina Kaif spent most of her childhood living in Europe, Asia and the United States. Her family settled in Hawaii when she was a teen, and it was there that a modeling agent discovered Katrina. Before long she was modeling professionally in London, while also moonlighting as an actress. Her first film appearance was in the 2003 British action film "Boom," which was an absolute failure both financially and critically. Determined to make it as an actress, Katrina moved to India where she began auditioning for major Bollywood movies. However, producers were initially reluctant to hire Kaif in their films, seeing that she was not a native Hindi speaker (Kaif's first language is English). With that in mind, Kaif began to work tirelessly on perfecting her Hindi, and eventually started landing roles in major Bollywood movies. From 2005 to 2011 she appeared in nearly two-dozen films, among them "Namestey London" (2007), "Race" (2008) and "Mere Brother Ki Dulhan," (2011), the vast majority of which were successes at the box office.
In 2012 Kaif appeared in the blockbuster action film, "Ek Tha Tiger." The film was a smash hit, second only to the Indian comedy "3 Idiots" (2009) in terms of overall sales. The film is also notable for starring Kaif's ex-boyfriend Salman Khan, who Kaif admitted to dating for several years prior to their 2010 break-up. Kaif made the record books once again in the 2012 romantic drama, "Jab Tak Hai Jaan," becoming Bollywood's third highest grossing movie overseas, and thus further cementing Katrina Kaif's status as one of the most commercially successful actresses in Bollywood history.
