Born in California, Walsh spent the first 10 years of his life traveling the world with his U.S. Foreign Service parents. After settling in Washington, D.C., the precocious performer began appearing in professional stage productions. Throughout his twenties and thirties, he appeared on TV and in small parts in big movies or big parts in small movies (like Eden, in which he costarred with his current wife, Joanna Going, while still married to ex Melora Walters). But his years of solid work impressed Nip/Tuck creator Ryan Murphy enough to write a star-making part specifically for him.
