At 15, he dropped out of school to become an apprentice toolmaker at Vickers Armstrong. He stayed interested in mechanical things and even collected antique guns.
Made a Commander of Order of the British Empire in 1992 and knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997.
Joined London's National Theatre in 1963, when it was under the direction of Sir Laurence Olivier. Gambom appeared in many productions including The Royal Hunt of the Sun, The Cruc
Has been nominated for myriad Olivier Awards and won for 1986's A Chorus of Disapproval, 1988's A View from the Bridge and 1990's Man of the Moment.
First major big-screen role was in the campy 1974 werewolf movie The Beast Must Die.
