British director Harold French began his film career as an actor in East Lynne on the Western Front (1931). He appeared frequently in films until 1936 when he wrote a pair of screenplays. French made his directorial debut with The Cavalier of the Streets (1936), an adaptation of a story by Michael Arlen. As a director, he specialized in helming literary adaptations, the best-known of which is his version of George Bernard Shaw's Major Barbara (1944).
