Watching an 11-year-old Natalie Portman's audition for Leon: The Professional, you can't help but wonder if the casting director realized the actress who snagged the role of Mathilda would be a future Academy Award winner. The part landed the preteen her first glimmer of the spotlight, and within the next two years she hit the acting jackpot by working with Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Woody Allen.  Impressive as she was back then, Portman has skyrocketed to glory, putting to rest any fears that she'd succumb to the dreadful fate that engulfs most young ones who enter showbiz. Check out her audition and decide for yourself why she didn't end up like these child actors... • 'Killing Season': John Travolta Sports a Freaky Beard and Hunts Robert De Niro
By: Christian Blauvelt June 14, 2013 6:05pm EST
Thought John Travolta's facial hair in Tony Scott's remake of The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3 couldn't be topped in terms of sheer freakiness? Think again. In Killing Season, from Mark Steven Johnson (the director of such latter-day classics as Daredevil and Ghost Rider), he rocks what could be a closely-cropped Amish beard as a former commando for the Serbian Army who's still nursing a grudge against Uncle Sam for America's intervention in the '90s Bosnian War.  And who is the personification of the U.S. military-industrial-complex who Bearded Travolta decides to target? Robert De Niro! They cross paths on a backwoods hunting trip, which ends up with Bearded Travolta hunting De Niro. It's a little bit Most Dangerous Game, a little bit The Edge. • Oscar winners front new anti-nuclear video campaign
    By: WENN.com June 12, 2013 3:38pm EST
Oscar winners Matt Damon, Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro and Christoph Waltz have teamed up for a new video, in which they urge U.S. leader Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin to imagine a world without nuclear weapons. The actors join Morgan Freeman, Naomi Watts, Alec Baldwin, John Cusack and Danny DeVito, among others, in the new Global Zero public service announcement, which has been released to coincide with the G8 Summit in Northern Ireland, where world leaders will meet to discuss arms and international defence next week (17-18Jun13). The video is part of an international campaign urging Obama to set the world's course to zero nuclear weapons by negotiating further cuts in the massive U.S.-Russian Cold War stockpiles and bringing other leading nuclear powers into negotiations for the first time in history. Douglas leads off the short film and says, "The message from national security experts and citizens around the world is clear: the only way to eliminate the global nuclear danger is to eliminate all nuclear weapons. It's time to set the world's course to zero." Freeman adds, "Nuclear weapons are obsolete relics of the Cold War; they do not address today's security threats, and they cost $1 trillion per decade globally. It's time we get rid of them." As part of their new initiative, Global Zero officials have delivered a letter to the White House from over 70 former prime ministers, foreign and defence ministers and military commanders, which features an official declaration recently adopted by the European Parliament endorsing Global Zero's plan to eliminate nuclear weapons. In recent weeks, a host of actors and musicians, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Paul McCartney, Tom Morello, Yoko Ono, Serj Tankian, Pearl Jam and R.E.M. have have promoted the campaign on social media.
  • Actor Harry Lewis dead at 93
    By: WENN.com June 10, 2013 7:09pm EST
Actor-turned-restaurateur Harry Lewis has died at the age of 93. He passed away from natural causes on Sunday (09Jun13) at a convalescent home in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, according to his publicist Greg Rogers. Born in Hollywood in 1920, Lewis entered the U.S. Air Force at 19 before signing a contract with Warner Bros. after World War II. He starred in the Humphrey Bogart 1948 classic Key Largo and secured small roles in several movies including The Unsuspected, The Harder They Fall and the 1981 miniseries East of Eden. In partnership with his wife Marilyn, he went on to launch the showbiz-hotspot restaurant chain Hamburger Hamlet, the first of which opened in 1950, before selling the chain in 1987 for $33 million (£21.29 million). The couple also set up the popular eatery Kate Mantilini on Wilshire Boulevard, where Al Pacino and Robert De Niro filmed a scene for their 1995 movie Heat. The couple added a second Kate Mantilini in Woodland Hills in 2003 and Lewis worked in the restaurants daily, only retiring from his duties three years ago.
  • Christoph Waltz to Star in Mystery Thriller ‘True Crimes’
By: Lauren Paylor June 07, 2013 4:26pm EST
Christoph Waltz may have first appeared on our cinematic radar as a brutal Nazi, but his Oscar-winning performance as a good-guy bounty hunter in Django Unchained  has landed him another heroic role: The Hollywood Reporter reports that Waltz will be taking the lead in the developing thriller True Crimes.  True Crimes is adapted from author David Grann's 2008 investigative article in the New Yorker . It tells the true story of Krystian Bala, a Polish writer convicted of murder the year before Grann's feature was published. After only six months, the investigation was dropped. Waltz will star as Jacek Wroblewski, the police officer who reopens the cold case to discover a series of clues in one of Bala's novels. The novel, entitled Amok, outlines a fictional version of the real-life murder using detailed information only the killer could have known.  Waltz is the winner of two Oscars for Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds. It was announced in May that he will also be joining Robert De Niro in Stephen Gaghan's Cold War action thriller The Candy Store. Will Waltz earn another Oscar nod even without the usual sprinkle of Tarantino magic? We'll soon find out. • Robert De Niro and John Travolta Go Wild in 'Killing Season' Trailer
By: Lauren Paylor June 07, 2013 12:25pm EST
Two veterans of the Bosnian War, one American and one Serbian, clash in the remote wilderness in the newest movie by the director of Ghost Rider and Daredevil. Starring Robert De Niro and John Travolta, Killing Season tests the physical and psychological strengths of two foes settling the score in their own personal World War III. The above trailer pits the two Hollywood mainstays against one another, perhaps reinstating some of De Niro's old gravitas while offering a new look at Travolta. Check it out, and catch the movie in theaters July 12. • Robert De Niro and Dianna Agron's 'Family' Has a Penchant for Blowing Up Supermarkets
By: Michael Arbeiter June 05, 2013 1:33pm EST
Robert De Niro cut his teeth on the mobster genre, earning just about every accolade he has received to date for his tenure under the direction of crime-obsessed Martin Scorsese. Although Silver Linings Playbook was an enthusiastic reminder of the actor's capabilities, De Niro's recent turns in the family comedy spectrum have been less than impressive. Luckily, rumors have amounted that he and Scorsese are back in talks for some new projects... but he can't just jump right back into the pools of gangsterdom. He'll need to ease his way back in, just as he eased his way out: with a crime-themed comedy. Just as Analyze This took De Niro from one genre to the next, The Family might take him right back again. We hope. Above is the first trailer for the flick, which stars De Niro as the patriarch of a family in Witness Protection after extensive interraction with the mob. His anger-prone, debauchery-inclined family includes wife Michelle Pfeiffer, daughter Dianna Agron, and son John D'Leo... none of whom find it easy to assimilate to French living. Oh yeah, they're in France. And Tommy Lee Jones is there. The Family might not be De Niro's route back to his old trasngressive glory. But at least it looks to have a bit more edge than Little Fockers. Preserve hope, De Nirians! Fox have added their support to the ongoing New York state rebuilding programme in the wake of last year's (12) Hurricane Sandy by appearing in a new public service announcement urging small business owners who lost their livelihoods in the storm to get in touch with local government groups and seek funding for new ventures.
  • Stars to celebrate Don Rickles at Friars Club ceremony
    By: WENN.com May 21, 2013 9:49am EST
Billy Crystal, Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese are among the stars who will raise a glass to veteran funnyman Don Rickles as he receives a lifetime achievement award in New York City next month (Jun13). The Toy Story star, who got his start in the 1950s, will be celebrated by members of the Friars Club on 24 June (13) for his contributions to the comedy industry. Producer Irv Welzer tells the New York Daily News, "It's ironic that Rickles, whose entire comedic career has been based on insults, is going to be toasted by the Friars, which is famous for roasting celebrities." Other celebrities to participate in the ceremony include Tony Danza, Kathy Griffin, Bob Newhart and Joan Rivers.
  • Check Out Morgan Freeman Super Drunk in 'Last Vegas' Trailer
By: Lindsey DiMattina May 17, 2013 12:21pm EST
Forget the Hangover boys, there is an older set of gentlemen in Vegas who really know how to party. In the new trailer for Last Vegas, Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, and Kevin Kline throw Michael Douglas a bachelor party in the City of Lights. While there aren't any tiger or baby thefts (that we know of yet) in Last Vegas, it's clear that these guys are gearing up for a wild night... with Freeman getting an early lead on the drunken misadventures. In the trailer, we see the men head to a club, but it doesn't seem like Freeman does too well sipping on Red Bulls and vodka. The man with the famously dignifed voice gets a little sloppy in this video. We've seen him play the president a million times, but this is a lot more fun! Last Vegas hits theaters Nov. 1.
