Acting legend Robert De Niro is set to be honoured in New York City for his dedication to Manhattan. The Raging Bull star was born in Greenwich Village and has been an active member of the community ever since, starting the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002 to revitalise Manhattan following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
He is to be feted for his support of the area at the Borough of Manhattan Community College Foundation Gala on Tuesday (13May14). College president Antonio Perez says the actor has been chosen as a recipient of the honour because he is a "loyal champion of Lower Manhattan".
The event will take place at 4 World Trade Center, part of the newly rebuilt office complex.
Latin superstar Alejandro Sanz is planning to duet with Antonio Banderas at the actor's annual charity gala in their native Spain. The Grammy-winning singer is set to be feted with the Humanitarian Award at the 2013 Starlite Gala in Marbella and he's eager to hit the stage with the ceremony's host, Banderas, for a special performance.
In a taped video message which aired during the event announcement on Tuesday (25Jun13), Sanz said, "Antonio, you're not going to escape and you're going to sing a song with me."
And it appears the Puss in Boots star is game for the challenge - he replied, "You guys are crazy to make me sing! But for the gala I'll do whatever. And for a million euros I'll strip naked."
The 2013 Starlite Gala will take place on 10 August (13) and will benefit a series of charitable foundations backed by Banderas.
After picking up the Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, the Oscar winner will be feted for the work she does to eradicate AIDS through her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project.
The actress will be awarded the Honorary Chair of this year's Cinema for Peace Gala at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, where she'll be awarded the Cinema for Peace Honorary Award.
Gala founder Jaka Bizilj says, "As a South African, Charlize Theron cares deeply about the human suffering of those infected, their families and friends due to HIV and AIDS. Every day thousands of people die of this disease. Charlize Theron's Africa Outreach Project contributes tremendously in the concerned areas, helping to educate children and minors about HIV and AIDS as well as to support affected persons."
Also up for major honours at the event are films by Oscar-nominated directors Michael Haneke (Amour), Ang Lee (Life of Pi), Steven Spielberg (Lincoln) and Benh Zeitlin (Beasts of the Southern Wild), who are all nominated in the Most Valuable Movie of the Year category at the gala, alongside Ben Affleck, Kathryn Bigelow, Nicholas Jarecki, Juan Antonio Bayona, Jacques Audiard and Kim Nguyen.
The Working Girl star has reached out to Hilton following reports she and Antonio Banderas are no longer together.
