Sheeran's X broke the 6.3 million mark during the first week after its debut on 23 June (14), exceeding Daft Punk's previous record of around 6.2 million.

Rock legends Metallica celebrated their controversial debut at Britain's iconic Glastonbury Festival on Saturday night (28Jun14) by inviting hundreds of fans onstage to watch the performance up close. More than 200 mud-spattered festival-goers - many of them wearing Metallica T-shirts - lined up at the rear of the enormous platform behind Lars Ulrich's drum kit, cheering and dancing throughout the gig.
The choice of headline act proved controversial in the run-up to the event, with many critics arguing a heavy metal band has no place at Glastonbury, but the Enter Sandman hitmakers closed the second day of the festival in style with a high-octane set that thrilled the crowd.
During the show, frontman James Hetfield addressed the controversy over the band's inclusion, telling the crowd, "Metallica is grateful to be invited to such an event called Glastonbury. We're very proud to be here and to be representing, can I say, the heavier sides of music, alright? I know it's all represented here so why not heavy rock, heavy metal, huh? It's about time."
He then dedicated the band's next track, Sad But True, to his fellow heavy rock groups hoping to follow in Metallica's footsteps by performing at the festival in future.
After ending their set with a version of Whiskey In The Jar and their track Seek & Destroy, during which dozens of huge inflatable balls embossed with the band's logo were released into the crowd, Hetfield said, "Thank you. Metallica loves you, Glastonbury. You made us feel so good. Thank you for having us."
Before leaving the stage, Ulrich took the mic to thank Glastonbury boss Michael Eavis and his family for inviting the band to perform, adding, "Metallica f**king loves you and we hope to see you one more f**king time."
Glastonbury closes on Sunday (29Jun14) with performances from acts including Dolly Parton, Ed Sheeran, and Kasabian.
Metallica star Lars Ulrich has dismissed the controversy over the band's upcoming appearance at Britain's Glastonbury festival as "ridiculous". The band is set to become the first heavy metal act to headline the fabled music event when they take to the stage later this month (Jun14), but their inclusion on the bill has sparked debate over whether hard rock acts have a place there.
A petition has also been launched by animal rights activists opposing the band's Glastonbury appearance over frontman James Hetfield's decision to narrate a new U.S. documentary about bear hunting in Alaska.
However, Ulrich is adamant they will not let the nasty comments ruin their big moment, telling Metal Hammer, "Glastonbury is like the Holy Grail in England and we're respectful to that, but when somebody sits there and talks about petitions or what some other guy says, there's a point that it just becomes ridiculous. We're fairly thick-skinned and turn a blind eye to it or whatever, but if Mick Jagger, or Alex Turner, or the very nice guys in Kasabian who I love (talk about Metallica at Glastonbury) it's cool. But at some point, when there's some guy in some other band... it's like 'Huh? What? Who are you?'"
The 2014 Glastonbury festival kicks off on 27 June (14) and also features acts including Ed Sheeran, Lily Allen, Arcade Fire and Kasabian.
Iron Maiden will never be tempted to follow Metallica to Britain's Glastonbury festival, according to frontman Bruce Dickinson. James Hetfield's band will become the first heavy metal act to headline the fabled event when they take to the iconic Pyramid Stage next month (Jun14), prompting speculation they will pave the way for more hard rock bands at the event.
However, Dickinson is adamant Iron Maiden won't be one of them, branding the festival too "bourgeois" for his band.
He tells Britain's Daily Star newspaper, "Personally I have no interest in going to Glastonbury. In the days when Glasto was an alternative festival it was quite interesting.
"Now it's the most bourgeois thing on the planet. Anywhere Gwyneth Paltrow goes and you can live in an air-conditioned yurt is not for me... I'll leave the middle classes to do Glastonbury and the rest of the great unwashed will decamp to Knebworth (for the Sonisphere festival) and drink lots of beer and have fun."
The 2014 Glastonbury festival also features sets from acts including Lily Allen, Ed Sheeran, Arcade Fire and Kasabian.
Taylor Swift seems to be in a dating rut. The country-pop superstar has largely been hanging out with pals like Lorde and Karlie Kloss over the last year, leaving the relationship drama to friends (or former friends) like Ed Sheeran and Selena Gomez. There have been rumors that she was dating Zach Braff or Divergent's Theo James, but both turned out to be false. While it's probably good that Swift is spending some time without a male companion and getting to know herself better — she's still young after all — we're jonesing for the days when her dating habits were fodder for tabloids and the basis for her songs. Since we don't have anything new to talk about, we've decided to look backwards. Swift has had plenty of boyfriends over the years, but who's your favorite?
When the Jonas Brothers were first a thing and Swift was bursting onto the scene, there was a tour bus romance. While he has taken a couple of veiled shots at Swift for her habit of taking out her relationship pains out in her songs, instead of throwing her under the bus the way that he did with Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato, he's largely been complimentary of his ex.
The duo had a brief fling while filming Valentine's Day, where they played a cute jock-cheerleader couple. The face of Twilight's Team Jacob is now dating The 100 star Marie Avgeropoulos, but for a brief time the Taylor-Taylor combo was adorable.
It was the coupling that was so crazy that it made sense. Mayer is 12 years older and came in with his own set of dating issues… he's the (far) less innocent male version of Swift. As with all of either singer's past relationships, the pairing was fairly brief but they both at least came away with great fodder for new lyrics.
The grandson of Robert F. Kennedy enjoyed some summer loving from Swift when he was 18 and she was 23. Like all great summer flings, it ended with the start of the school year.
Swift's other dalliance with an older man — Gyllenhaal is nine years her senior — led to exceedingly sweet paparazzi photos of the two enjoying morning walks around New York. They were together enough that she reportedly scored an introduction to Jake's epically cool sister Maggie Gyllenhaal. That alone would make the whole thing worth it to us.
Then there was Swift's other younger gentleman, the One Direction cutie. The two dated for a few months into the early part of 2013, until they broke up after a fight while taking a Caribbean holiday. While they've reportedly been polite to each other while making the party rounds, it seems that Styles might irritate Swift more than the other exes. Some were shocked when Swift appeared to mouth "Shut the f**k up" in reference to Styles talking to reporters at the 2013 MTV VMAs.
All of Swift's ex-boyfriends have a certain amount of appeal — otherwise she probably wouldn’t have dated them — but the two that stand out above the rest are the "bad boy" John Mayer and the "boy toy" Harry Styles. Vote below to tell us which ex, Mayer or Styles, you think Swift will most regret never, ever getting back together with.
It takes a misunderstood artist to know one, so when Seth Rogen revealed that his good friend James Franco has plans to play Tommy Wiseau in an adaptation of The Disaster Artist: My Time in The Room, the world responded, "Well, of course." Rogen revealed the plans during an appearance on the Opie and Anthony radio show where he talked about the film, which he will produce with his writing partner Evan Goldberg. Based on the book by Greg Sestero - who co-starred in the infamous cult hit - the film will chronicle the production process of The Room, which was plagued by problems and cost its writer/director/producer over $10 million.
The Disaster Artist isn't the first time that Franco has expressed interest in Wiseau and his work. Last year, he wrote an in-depth piece about The Room for Vice, and described Wiseau as "ageless, muscled, sweet, and scary; he is part vampire, part Hollywood dreamer, part gangster, part Ed Wood, and super lonely." Franco's depiction of Wiseau as a tortured genius is fitting, especially considering Franco is sometimes portrayed as a underrated artistic icon as well. The fact that much of Franco's statement can be used to describe himself seems to illustrate exactly why the Francophrenia star is the perfect person to step into the shoes of Wiseau. It's just one of the many qualities that Franco and Wiseau have in common:
Both Are Multi-Hypenate Artists... Though Wiseau is primarily known for his work on The Room, which he wrote, directed, produced and starred in, he has also produced and acted in several other films, as well as creating a television show and two web series. Franco, meanwhile, has dabbled in almost every artistic medium there is, and in addition to acting, directing, screenwriting and producing. He is also a painter, poet, teacher and novelist. Plus, he starred in Spider Man 3, which is basically The Room of the superhero genre.
Whose Work is Not Taken Seriously.. Though most of the world loves The Room for being so terrible that it's entertaining, Wiseau seemed to believe it to be a great work of artistic genuis. He now seems to admit that it's not very good, though whether he's truly changed his mind about it or is just playing along, we'll probably never know. Similarly, much of Franco's non-acting work has received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, many of whom dismiss him because of his celebrity status. Like Wiseau, he has also capitalized on the criticism to make fun of himself, although we're almost certain that he still truly believes himself to be an artistic genius.
And Are Famous For the Wrong Reasons. Wiseau's celebrity is due entirely to the fact that The Room is, according to Entertainment Weekly, "the Citizen Kane of bad movies," rather than any of his other, more successful projects. While Franco's been giving solid acting performances since his breakthrough role in Freaks and Geeks, he's more likely to get press coverage for things like taking half-naked selfies, inappropriate Instagram behavior, or fighting with critics on Twitter. And those are just from the last two months.
Both Are Enigmas...The little that is known about Wiseau's life comes from Sestero's book, which reads like the plot of a Nicolas Cage film. According to the story, Wiseau was born in communist Europe, moved to France and worked as a dishwasher before he was wrongfully arrested and tortured by the police. From there, he made his way to Louisiana, then to San Francisco, where he sold toys to tourists, changed his name and somehow made enough money to fund his film. Franco has revealed a lot more about his life, but he still makes it difficult for the public to get a grasp on who he is, primarily due to his strange career moves, various artistic endeavors and inability to open his eyes all the way. As Jonah Hill said at his roast "I've known you for years, and I'm still not sure I've ever actually met the real you."
Who Have Seen Their Writing Adapted Into Films...Franco's collection of short stories, Palo Alto, was recently adapted into a film by Gia Coppola - with Franco starring, obviously - which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival to largely positive reviews. Wiseau, however, preferred to direct his adaptation himself, and turned his 540-page novel into The Room. Since the final product wasn't 9 hours long, that means enough was cut from the novel to be the basis for an entire Room film franchise.
And Both Have a Connection To James Dean.According to Sestero's book, Wiseau was so enamored of the late actor that several lines The Room were based on the dialogue in the film Rebel Without A Cause. He also revealed that Wiseau frequently visited a restaurant owned by one of Dean's friends, although if he's looking for a tenuous connection to Dean, he's probably better off befriending Franco, who won a Golden Globe for playing Dean in a TV biopic. Besides, it'll save him a lot of money in the long run.
Also, They Look Alike Just put a long, dark wig on Franco's head and give him a healthy spray tan, and they could be twins.
