"It was the first time I made a movie and not had them there every day. Horrible. Actually kind of horrible. You're just super attached to those four people." Julia Roberts had an extremely difficult time leaving her husband Danny Moder and their three kids at home while she filmed her upcoming movie, August: Osage County in Oklahoma.
Smart and the Pretty Woman star, along with her husband Danny Moder, were feted by fellow eco activists, including actors Peter Fonda and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, at Heal the Bay's annual Bring Back the Beach gala on Friday (18May12).
Together the crowd raised funds to help promote awareness about protecting the marine animals of Santa Monica Bay home, and The Butterfly Effect beauty Smart was thrilled to be recognised for her years of hard work.
She tells local publication Los Angeles Confidential, "I'm extremely grateful and honoured. I highly respect and love Heal the Bay; their work is so effective, far-reaching, and impactful on the ocean. Growing up in Topanga Canyon (in California), being in the mountains and surrounded by nature inspired me.
"My parents always loved nature, and that inspired my brother and me. Growing up I was always aware of the environment (through) beach clean-ups, hikes, and bike rides in the canyon. Right out of high school I wanted to get involved and saw Heal the Bay posters around. That was my first venture into environmental work when I was 18."
"I saw a movie last night where Woody Harrelson sucked a girl's toe like he hadn't eaten in a week... It was called Rampart and there's a full toe suck. (Husband) Danny (Moder) had gone out to get some water and I said, 'You have got to get back in here and see what is going on'." Julia Roberts is impressed by Harrelson's new movie.
The Pretty Woman star values family time with her husband Danny Moder and their kids and hates the idea of just sitting and watching a film they might not all enjoy.
She tells WENN, "We're more book people. They (kids) have a lot of fairytale books and some of the old ones have such great illustrations and with proper parental editing when reading before bed, they're quite lovely.
"Those nice, cozy, very short hours before bed, we just really spend together as a family, sharing the day and reading books and, before you know it, it is time for bed. There's just not time for that (watching movies). We would prefer something different in that time.
"It's nice that it (reading) opens up other options; stories and poetry and talking, sharing ideas."
The Milk star has worked tirelessly to raise money and awareness for the impoverished nation since it was struck by a devastating earthquake back in 2010 and his efforts were rewarded over the weekend.
Penn was offered the job by Haitian foreign minister Laurent Lamothe at the Cinema for Peace benefit in Beverly Hills, California.
Stepping up to the podium to greet the crowd, the actor beamed, "I do accept. (It would be useful to) change being called, 'Hey you (expletive), to hey Mr. Ambassador!"

According to the New York Post, singer Damien Rice shelled out $475,000 (GBP296,875) for one of Bono's guitars and Roberts' husband, Danny Moder, offered to fork out $50,000 (GBP31,250) for a trip to Haiti with Penn.
The Hollywood actress met her cameraman partner Danny Moder while they were both working on 2000 movie The Mexican. They married in 2002 and are now parents to three children.
They teamed up again on Roberts' latest project, Jesus Henry Christ, which saw the actress step behind the camera as executive producer. Roberts admits she envisaged spending time with her husband during the shoot, but Moder was just too busy.
She tells People.com, "It was so great to be working on the same movie with him. He's so good at what he does. He's so clear and focused,. It's actually hard to get his attention on the set because he's really like, 'No, I'm working.' But at lunch I will be like, 'Hi, remember me, your wife?'"
Internet reports suggest the mum-of-three and her husband Danny Moder are set to extend their family and the actress is looking into a plan to give an Indian orphan a home after falling in love with the country while shooting Eat Pray Love there in 2009.
Roberts has been practising the Hindu faith ever since filming in India - and leading members of the religion could not be happier if the baby news is true.
U.S.-based statesman Rajan Zed tells WENN, "We welcome the reports of Julia Roberts trying to adopt a child from India and myself or any other Hindu scholar would be glad to guide her through various sacraments for the new child."
The actress piled on the pounds while scoffing pasta and pizza on set in Italy, convinced the extra weight would fall off when the shoot switched to India - but it never happened.
Roberts tells The Sun newspaper, "I gained 10 pounds for this movie and I thought I'd hurt myself trying to get my jeans on.
"I packed on the weight during the Italy part of the shoot, but then people said, 'Oh, you'll lose it when you film in India.' Somehow I didn't get that memo."
But Roberts' new look has won the seal of approval from her husband-of-eight years Danny Moder - he has convinced her that men aren't concerned with how their wives look in the bedroom.
She adds, "I believe that guys don't care about what you look like naked. Anyway, that's what dimmer switches are for!"
The Pretty Woman star fell out with her sibling in the 1990s and they "stopped talking" for several years.
But Eric admits the rift disappeared after Julia welcomed her first children, twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, with husband Danny Moder.
He tells Access Hollywood, "We're brother and sister and we both have really strong opinions about things, so it's a lot of 'f**k you,' 'no, f**k you' and hanging up the phone. But it got so blown out of proportion. We stopped talking and then with the birth of the twins we started talking again. Now we talk almost every day. I like her."
