Reggae artist Junior Murvin has died at the age of 67. The Police and Thieves hitmaker passed away at the Port Antonio Hospital in Portland, Jamaica on Monday (02Dec13), according to the Jamaica Observer.
Murvin was admitted into the hospital on Thursday (28Nov13) for diabetes and hypertension treatment, but his cause of death has yet to be released.
The singer found fame with the release of his debut album Police and Thieves, which was produced by reggae legend Lee 'Scratch' Perry, in 1977. The title track was an international hit and it was covered by The Clash in 1978.
Murvin released his last studio album, World Cry, in 1995. His last recording, a single titled Wise Man, was released in 1998.
Pop star Katy Perry had a very special date for Sunday's (24Nov13) American Music Awards in Los Angeles - an Arizona teen with Down Syndrome. The singer was moved by a video Megan Squire had sent in as part of a U.S. TV competition to win a private concert from Perry at her high school, and although she did not win, the I Kissed A Girl hitmaker decided to treat the youngster and her family to a trip to Los Angeles to attend the AMAs with her, walking the red carpet together and even sitting behind Lady Gaga at the ceremony.
Stars including Katy Perry, Beyonce, Eminem and One Direction have donated songs to an album raising funds for typhoon relief efforts in the Philippines. Altogether, 39 tracks have been donated to the Songs for the Philippines compilation record, which will be released via online retailer iTunes on Monday (02Dec13).
All proceeds will be donated to the Philippines Red Cross, a charity providing essential help to victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which battered the south-east Asian country earlier this month (Nov13), killing more than five thousand people and leaving many more homeless.
Other stars who have contributed to the album include U2, Justin Bieber, Madonna and Bruno Mars.
Pop star Katy Perry has offered her condolences following the death of a 16-year-old girl whose cover of Roar became an Internet hit. Cancer patient Olivia Wise became an online sensation earlier this year (13) after a recording of her singing Perry's popular track hit the web, and the pop star was so moved, she recorded a special video message for the teen.
Wise, who was suffering from a brain tumour, passed away on Monday (25Nov13), and Perry was quick to remember the youngster for her bravery.
In a post on her Twitter.com page, she writes, "Olivia Wise, I can hear you singing with the angels now. Your spirit & strength has inspired me & so many others... May you rest in peace."
"what the hell, Katy Perry. what the hell, music industry. is 'do a racist performance to get press' gonna be a thing now? please let's not." The Mountain Goats star John Darnielle was not a fan of Katy Perry's performance at the American Music Awards on Sunday night (24Nov13). The pop star dressed up like a Japanese geisha for her set.
Last night was the 2013 American Music Awards, which means that all anyone is going to be able to talk about this morning is Miley Cyrus. For her performance of "Wrecking Ball," Cyrus decided to change things up a bit and skipped all of the twerking and outrageous antics in favor of giving a simpler, more emotional performance and ensuring that everyone just focused on her voice and the giant, floating cat behind her. That's right, Cyrus turned her latest single into a duet with a massive, animated cat who cried diamonds during the song's emotional climax. We're not sure where the inspiration for the performance came from, although it's probably some combination of all of the cat videos on YouTube and Kanye West's recent "Bound 2" video, but what we're really impressed with is the fact that even though she put in the least amount of effort when it came to staging last night, her weird, singing cat managed to make it the most talked about performance of the night.
Considering the 2013 AMAs included Lady Gaga arriving on a horse made up of people, Katy Perry building an elaborately-choreographed replica of a Japanese garden, and Justin Timberlake recruiting all of the Tennessee Kids to throw a boozy party onstage, it seems odd that Cyrus should be the most memorable part of the awards show. But Cyrus simply tapped into the most powerful PR resource in the world: the Internet. Let's face it, there's absolutely nothing that the Internet loves more than cats. Sure, seeing R. Kelly perform is always entertaining, and everyone is excited for the TLC comeback, but when it comes to cats, there's simply no competition.
It's the laziest and yet smartest move that Cyrus as made in the past year. Likely worn down from the combination of promoting "Wrecking Ball" and her recent 21st birthday, when it came time to plan her AMAs performance, the singer was probably too tired to come up with anything too elaborate. But she knew that people were expecting something that would top her infamous VMAs performance and her recent EMAs stunt, so she had to come up with something that would hold people's attention, and yet still allow her to fit a nap into her schedule. "Let's just throw a giant cat up there and call it a day. People love cats. Make it cry diamonds or something, that'll be weird," she said to her management team, and then ran off to dye her eyebrows. And so, simply by hitting the right mix of bizarre and adorable, Cyrus managed to still make the headlines without actually trying.
In fact, when you think about it, the Internet probably inspired most of Cyrus' recent performances. "Blurred Lines" became the biggest hit of the summer thanks, in part, to its video going viral, so Cyrus simply took all of the buzz surrounding it to a new, weird level. There's nothing gossip sites love more than tween stars behaving badly, and nothing embodies that whole "wacky and out-of-control" vibe better than Cyrus smoking a joint onstage. If her next performance involves a screaming goat and tons of '90s nostalgia, then there will genuinely be no stopping the buzz that surrounds her. (Feel free to use that idea, Miley, no credit necessary.)
So, Gaga, Katy, Justin, and anyone else who might have another big performance coming up, skip the rehearsals and the pyrotechnics and just stick a cat in the background. People will talk about you for weeks. Check out the video of Cyrus and her feline friend, below, for inspiration.

Other performance highlights came from Jennifer Lopez, who dazzled in a special tribute to late Latin music icon Celia Cruz; Lady Gaga, who played a receptionist as she seduced R. "It's terrifying. Sometimes I just want to post pictures of really stupid stuff but I have such a responsibility. I think that's why maybe they follow me because with my Twitter no one runs it besides myself. No one tweets for me. No one speaks for me. They see the authenticity, it's not always me saying, 'Buy my CD, buy my music...!' That's cheesy and desperate." Katy Perry likes to reach out to her 47.8 million fans directly after becoming the most followed celebrity on Twitter.com. She overtook Justin Bieber, who boasts 47.3 million followers.
Celebrity illusionist David Blaine had rapper Kanye West, Woody Harrelson and Will Smith and his family recoiling in horror during a U.S. TV special after putting an ice pick through his hand without drawing blood. The magician took his show to celebrities' homes and performed mind-bending tricks right in front of them, and one particular stunt had West, Harrelson, the Smiths and Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul speechless.
At the start of the David Blaine: Real or Magic show, which aired on Tuesday night (19Nov13), the illusionist had West and Harrelson's stomachs churning as he slowly stuck a sharp pick through his hand, with the end of the blade poking out through the other side - much to his celebrity fans' shock. He then asked West to pull out the ice pick and examine his uninjured hand for himself, as Harrelson looked on.
Blaine repeated the same stunt with Will and Jada Pinkett Smith as their children, Willow and Jaden, watched intently, while he did it again with Cranston and Paul - and they were all left stunned.
Later in the programme, Blaine showed the trick to a doctor, who expressed his amazement at the illusion and joked that there was a "simple explanation" to the cause: "He has no blood running through his veins!"
However, Blaine admitted that not every ice pick trick has gone to plan after working on the stunt for 10 years.
He confessed, "I brushed a nerve the other day and my hand was like, frozen for three days."
During the TV special, Blaine also had germaphobe director Woody Allen averting his eyes as he downed a glass of water and swallowed two goldfish - only to bring them back up hours later, alive and well.
He also surprised Katy Perry by producing a small alligator out of her empty purse, and played card tricks on Harrison Ford, pop star Psy, actress Olivia Wilde and her fiance Jason Sudekis, among others.
