The Writers Guild announced its screen nominees this morning with Best Original screenplay nods going to Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber for (500) Days of Summer, James Cameron for Avatar, Jon Lucas and Scott Moore for The Hangover, Mark Boal for The Hurt Locker and Joel and Ethan Coen for A Serious Man.

In a cross between Finding Nemo and Madagascar, with a little Lion King thrown in for good measure, Disney’s The Wild is just plain old tired derivativeness. Maybe we should chalk this one up to bad timing.

Although stars Matthew Perry, Bruce Willis and Amanda Peet shine in this sequel, The Whole Ten Yards fails to go the distance and, just like the title's dubious twist on the common expression, no one seems to know what it means.

Nominations were announced Wednesday for the 2003 IFP Independent Spirit Awards, also known as the Indie Oscars. Leading the pack with six nominations is Lions Gate Films' Lovely & Amazing, followed by Focus Features' Far From Heaven, which received five nods.

No doubt, you'll laugh here and there at Showtime, but you've seen/heard/smelled it all before. It's strictly matinee material--or a DVD rental.

In a war that lasted six months and killed an estimated 10,000 people, Harrison's Flowers expects audiences to be moved by the disappearance of a snotty photojournalist that we know nothing about. Although the film paints a gritty and realistic portrait of what happened in southeastern Europe in 1991, it's hard to care for any of the characters and their circumstances.

I don't know about staying out of the backwoods, but I can tell you this. Stay out of the theater when this flick's showing--waaaaay out.
