Hollywood star Angelina Jolie was handed an honorary Academy Award for her humanitarian work at a special ceremony in Los Angeles on Saturday (16Nov13). The actress fought back tears as she received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from Star Wars filmmaker George Lucas during the Governors Awards, which are held by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Upon accepting the golden statuette, the star thanked her partner, Brad Pitt, who was on hand to support the actress with their 12-year-old son Maddox.
She told Pitt from the stage, "My love. Your support and your guidance make everything I do possible".
Jolie also promised her son she would not cry, adding, "I'm not going to cry, I promise... I'm not going to embarrass you. You and your brothers and sisters are my happiness and there is no greater honour in this world than being your mom."
The trophy is Jolie's second Academy Award - she won her first for her performance in 1999 drama Girl, Interrupted.
Steve Martin and Angela Lansbury were also awarded honorary Oscars during the ceremony.
Former Frasier star David Hyde Pierce is returning to the Christopher Durang's play Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike as a director for the show's Los Angeles premiere next year (14). The actor took a leading role in the production when it opened in New York last year (12), and now he's replacing director Nicholas Martin for the show's Mark Taper Forum run, which will star Christine Ebersole.
Movie producer Martin Bregman fears Alec Baldwin's stalker will struggle to cope with life behind bars. Canadian actress Genevieve Sabourin was convicted of stalking and harassing the 30 Rock star on Thursday (14Nov13) following a dramatic four-day trial in New York City.
Sabourin was sentenced to 180 days in jail, plus 30 more days for contempt of court for repeatedly heckling Baldwin and his wife Hilaria during their testimonies.
Scarface producer Bregman was dragged into the case over claims he set the actor up on a date with Sabourin, and he has now spoken out about her conviction, admitting he fears she will crack under the pressure of life in jail.
He tells the New York Daily News, "She's not a tough person. She's not going to last at Rikers (prison in New York). She thinks it's going to help her career. I believe that's what she thinks. She's famous now. It's a hell of a way to get there, kid."
Bregman, who is married, also dismissed allegations that he was having an affair with 41-year-old Sabourin, adding, "I'm 87 years old and that (reports of an affair with Sabourin) is very flattering, but that's all it is."
Alec Baldwin's accused stalker has been ordered to spend 30 days behind bars for contempt of court after continually interrupting proceedings in her ongoing trial. French Canadian actress Genevieve Sabourin is currently facing charges of bombarding the 55-year-old actor with emails and voicemails, and making unwelcome visits to his Big Apple homes after enjoying a meal with him in 2010.
Baldwin denied ever engaging in a romantic relationship with Sabourin during testimony in Manhattan Criminal Court on Tuesday (12Nov13), and called her alleged pestering "nightmarish" as he broke down on the stand.
His claims prompted a number of outbursts from the 41-year-old suspect, who loudly accused the actor of "lying" on multiple occasions. Judge Robert Mandelbaum ordered her to stay quiet and threatened to hold her in contempt of court for her actions, before she was bundled out of the courtroom by her lawyer, Todd Spodek.
When she returned to court on Wednesday (13Nov13), she was marched off to jail after disobeying Judge Mandelbaum's warnings by interrupting her own attorney.
In another trial twist, movie producer Martin Bregman has also accused Baldwin of lying under oath after the actor told the court he only met Sabourin for dinner as a favour to the veteran filmmaker, who had reportedly been having an affair with the woman.
The former 30 Rock star, who grew emotional during the hearing, claimed 41-year-old Sabourin was the married Scarface producer's longtime mistress - an allegation that stunned Bregman and prompted him to speak out to the New York Daily News.
He says, "He's lying... To sidestep any involvement with (Sabourin), he made up a report."
Branding the move "pretty stupid", he added, "I'm 87 years old and that (reports of an affair with younger woman Sabourin) is very flattering, but that's all it is."
Tuesday's court proceedings also featured testimony from Baldwin's wife Hilaria, who told the court she once tried to reason with Sabourin over the phone in a bid to persuade her to leave the couple alone.
Recalling the conversation, Hilaria, who wed Baldwin last year (12), said, "She starts shrieking at me, 'You b**ch! You b**tch! You b**ch! You b**ch!' Over and over again."
The trial continues.
Guy Fieri showcases the diverse eats of the Big Apple in the Best of New York episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Do yourself a favor: don't count calories.
John's of 12th Street Italian Restaurant
A patron mentions that this place looks like it would be in a Martin Scorsese movie. The Italian food is authentic and just watching it should cause you to salivate just a little. Featured dishes include veal meatballs (loaded with flavor: bread crumbs, milk, eggs, scallions, pecorino cheese, caramelized onions, Worcestershire sauce, basil, dried oregano, minced garlic) and making their own pasta from scratch. None of this out-of-the-box stuff.
Defonte's Sandwich Shop
A plethora of meats and cheeses are housed in this deli that cranks out New York heroes — about 200 or 300 of them a day. Give these guys credit, they make their own mozzarella. That cheese complements their massive sandwiches. Guy tries the steak pizzaiola sandwich and burns his mouth biting into the melted mozzarella. Totally worth it though.
The Smoke Joint
With that name you know it must be serving up barbeque. The main dish is an eye opener: killer short ribs that look like they're straight out of Jurassic Park. A nine-ingredient sauce spruces up the dinosauric ribs. There is nothing short about these short ribs; you won’t be left hungry. The Smoke Joint also serves buffalo wings, spicy pork links, pulled pork sandwiches and other delicious food that will have you reaching for wet napkins constantly. Standard napkins need not apply.
It specializes in Southern comfort food (not the alcohol Southern Comfort, although why would you want food drenched in that swill?). The featured menu item here is pretzels. Obviously, they are not the junky pretzels you buy in a bag or on the street corner. Great detail is put into forming these delicious pretzels. A mean beer cheese sauce is the pretzel's tag team partner. Initially, Guy doesn’t think the ramekin of sauce would be enough. He is proven wrong as its thickness and flavor provide plenty of cheesy and beer-y sustenance.
Pies 'n' Thighs
A mega-sized doughnut shines at this place. A pecan butter crunch doughnut is on the menu. Toffee and pecan are crunched up to coat the fried dessert. Guy claims it weighs three pounds. Although it’s never actually weighed, the doughnut looks plenty dense and packed with calories. It does look like it'll increase your waistline, but come on, it's a doughnut. There’s no such thing as a healthy doughnut. And if there is, don't eat it! Eat one at Pies 'n' Thighs, you'll enjoy yourself.
This 1940s Jewish deli specializes in kreplach, dumplings stuffed with brisket. Guy tries the fried kreplach and boiled version in soup. Naturally, he enjoys it. How awkward would it be for Guy to go to a location and make sour faces as he eats? Corned beef, beef tongue and stuffed cabbage also feature prominently at Ben's Best. The stuffed cabbage is a real mouthful. You get two meat-filled stuffed cabbages. Enjoy.
Actor Alec Baldwin grew emotional in court on Tuesday (12Nov13) after coming face-to-face with his accused stalker as he testified about the "nightmarish" harassment he has suffered since 2010. French Canadian actress Genevieve Sabourin stands accused of bombarding the 55 year old with emails and voicemails, and making unwelcome visits to his New York homes after they enjoyed dinner together in 2010.
The former 30 Rock star maintained in Manhattan Criminal Court that the meal was purely business, claiming he gave her career advice as a favour to his friend, Scarface producer Martin Bregman, who had been romantically involved with Sabourin.
However, he began fearing for his family's safety when Sabourin showed up on his doorstep on multiple occasions, and even turned up in the Hamptons on the day he proposed to his now-wife, Hilaria, in April, 2012.
Fighting back tears, he recalled, "I ran to tell my wife not to go near the door because I wasn't sure if she had a gun or a weapon or where we were at this point, and then I called the East Hampton police."
Baldwin insisted he never had a sexual or romantic relationship with Sabourin and described the alleged harassment as "nightmarish".
His denials prompted a number of outbursts from Sabourin, who repeatedly interrupted Baldwin's testimony and even shouted out, "You're lying", as the judge threatened to hold her in contempt of court. She was subsequently bundled out of the courtroom by her lawyer, Todd Spodek.
In hearings last week (ends08Nov13), prosecutors shared a number of emails Sabourin had reportedly sent to Baldwin, including one in which she expressed her desire to conceive a "mini Baldwin" on St. Patrick's Day in 2012.
Spodek claims his client only contacted Baldwin seeking closure for their "crumbling" romance.
New mum Hilaria Baldwin is also expected to testify in the case.
British actor Jason Statham is stepping in to replace Daniel Craig in a sequel to hit 2004 film Layer Cake. The Transporter star and his manager Steve Chasman will produce Viva La Madness together after acquiring the rights to the J.J. Connolly novel, according to Deadline.com.
Statham will also take on the role of the unnamed protagonist, which will see him becoming embroiled in drug dealings, money laundering and fraud, while trying to prepare for retirement.
Craig's performance in the original crime thriller helped to land him the role as James Bond in Casino Royale. Director Martin Campbell previously admitted he had narrowed it down to Craig or Henry Cavill - but the "terrific charm" the blond actor displayed in Layer Cake ultimate won him to iconic 007 role, taking over from Pierce Brosnan.
With his recent interview in Esquire, George Clooney has all but declared war on fellow superstar Leonardo DiCaprio. In the piece, Clooney shares some astute observations about the nature of fame and staying grounded... but what's far more interesting is the not-baseless insults he tosses DiCaprio's way — particularly when it comes to their dueling pickup basketball teams. "We're all like fifty years old, and we beat them three straight: 11–0, 11–0, 11–0. And the discrepancy between their game and how they talked about their game made me think of how important it is to have someone in your life to tell you what’s what. I’m not sure if Leo has someone like that."
Way to throw down the Citibike-shaped gaunlet, Clooney. Now, there's only one question — Which side to take? Let's see how each star measures up in hopes of deciding who to root for. But before that, let's look at our two competitors.
In the Old Hollywood Corner, we have GEORGE CLOONEY, serial dater, salt-and-pepper haired, former TV star aquaintance of Obama.
Aaaaaaaand in the Aging Playboy corner, we have LEONARDO DICAPRIO, goatee haver, Smartcar investor, and terrible Boston accent...er.
Now, let's see how they measure up in the key celebrity categories:
Basketball Team: No brainer, clearly it's CLOONEY.Ex-Girlfriends/Taste in Women: Hmm, both tend to disappoint with their dating choices (why must you and Sandy Bullock tease us so, Clooney? Why?!), but while Blake Lively is pretty bad, foisting Elisabetta Cannalis on us was worse. Calling this category in favor of DICAPRIO. Houses in Lake Como: Draw. Oscar Season: Clooney gets extra points for writing and directing his entry, The Monuments Men, but scheduling trouble has pushed it putting him behind DiCaprio's latest Scorsese collaboration and Christmas release The Wolf of Wall Street. However, Clooney also produced surefire nominee August: Osage County — but, that film is distributed by Harvey Weinstein, who seems intent on screwing with his films left and right. DICAPRIO.Oscar Possession: Despite DiCaprio's best efforts, he did not gain weight to change his movie-star looks to that of an unwashed terrorist in Syriana. CLOONEY.Director Buddies: DiCaprio works on a near-constant basis with Martin Scorsese, but Clooney has to take the prize for diversifying to include not just the Coen Brots, but Steven Soderbergh, Wes Anderson, and himself. Shake it up, Leo! CLOONEY.Je Ne Sais Quoi: Hmm. Keep in mind that the whole idea of this category is that no justification is needed — DICAPRIO.Posse: Lucas Haas, Tobey Maguire, and Kevin Connelly versus Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, JK, LOL. CLOONEYMarital Status: Draw.
So far, looks like a pretty even matchup. This could become a long, drawn out conflict that both Clooney and DiCaprio would no doubt host a fundraiser to end. Still, whose side are you on?

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio turned his star-studded birthday party into a charity fundraiser on Sunday (10Nov13) after recruiting rappers Kanye West and 2 Chainz to headline a special concert in his honour. The Titanic hunk hosted a private dinner at TAO Downtown in New York for 100 of his friends and family, including frequent collaborator Martin Scorsese and actors Tobey Maguire, Orlando Bloom and Benicio Del Toro.
The guests, among them designer Nicky Hilton, hip-hop star Busta Rhymes and New York Yankees baseball aces Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, were then treated to a show by West, who performed hits such as Gold Digger and Good Life, while 2 Chainz serenaded the birthday boy with his own version of Happy Birthday.
The event, which also featured a charity auction, helped raise $3 million (£2 million) for environmental causes supported by the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.
The Hollywood star actually turned 39 on Monday (11Nov13).
Director Spike Lee has been hit with a lawsuit after mistakenly publicising the address of an elderly couple in Florida in a mix-up over the whereabouts of controversial shooter George Zimmerman. The He Got Game filmmaker was so furious following the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in February, 2012, he used his Twitter.com blog to share the address of neighbourhood watch volunteer Zimmerman, who fatally shot the unarmed youngster in his gated community, sparking outrage and protests across the U.S.
However, the location Lee retweeted was actually the home of Elaine and David McClain, who have a son named William George Zimmerman - no relation to the Zimmerman involved in the headline-grabbing case.
The director apologised after learning the McClains were forced to flee their over his blunder, and he agreed to compensate the family for his actions.
Now it appears the settlement was not enough - the McClains have filed legal papers seeking further, unspecified damages, accusing Lee of putting their lives in serious danger, according to TMZ.com.
The plaintiffs claim Lee's tweet encouraged "a dangerous mob mentality" and they allege that they were subjected to death threats and hate mail and lived in constant fear for their safety.
Lee has since admitted it was a "stupid" mistake and reveals he received a scolding from his own wife, Tonya.
In an interview with U.S. talk show host Oprah Winfrey, which aired on Sunday (10Nov13), he said, "I don't know what my intention was (for tweeting the address). (I was just) angry... but angry is not a justification for stupidity... There's nothing I can say that can defend what I did. It was stupid...
"It was not a good time in the Lee household at that time... You gotta be a man, say, 'I made a mistake', and learn from it, because you can't do stuff that's going to affect other people's lives."
Shooter Zimmerman was acquitted of Martin's murder earlier this year (13) - a decision which sparked a further wave of demonstrations and inspired many leading African-American human rights leaders and celebrities, including Jay Z and Beyonce, to speak out.
