British actor Tom Ellis has been awarded substantial damages from British newspaper editors over false allegations suggesting he failed to pay child support to his ex-wife, soap star Tamzin Outhwaite.
The former Doctor Who star filed a defamation suit against publishing bosses MGN over a story printed in the Sunday Mirror in July (14), following his split from ex-Eastenders actress Outhwaite in 2013.
The case was heard in London's High Court on Thursday (06Nov14), when Ellis' lawyer, Leo Dawkins, explained: "The article claimed that my client had deliberately sought to shirk his responsibility to pay child maintenance for his two daughters with Ms. Outhwaite, by claiming he was too cash-strapped to do so, and that this had forced his ex-wife to threaten him with lawyers to ensure that he met his obligations as a father. "To have such defamatory allegations published in a national newspaper was deeply upsetting for my client. His distress was compounded by the fact that, as is obvious, the financial arrangements regarding his children are private."
Representatives for MGN accepted there was no truth to the allegations published and agreed to pay a "substantial" figure to Ellis in damages. They also issued a formal apology to the actor.
Ellis and Outhwaite's divorce was finalized earlier this year (14) after the actor confessed to committing adultery. The former couple met through mutual friend James McAvoy in 2005 and wed in 2006.
Actress Kerry Washington was honored with a top prize at a fashion awards gala in New York City on Monday night (03Nov14).
The Scandal star was the toast of the Accessories Council's 18th Annual ACE Awards as she picked up the Style Influencer award along with the show's costume designer Lyn Paolo.
As she accepted the honor at the event, held at the Cipriani 42nd Street venue in Manhattan, Washington described how she often collaborates with Paolo on her character Olivia Pope's costumes, telling the audience, "We often talk about the final five minutes in our fitting, which is that moment when the look is OK - it's a great suit, it works - but it's not quite there. How we take it from acceptable to exceptional is with the help of all of you guys - whether it's a Prada purse or Olivia's Movado watch or gloves or a ring."
Other attendees included Dakota Fanning, Naomi Campbell, Jack Huston and Nicky Hilton.
Joan Rivers' daughter has hired a team of lawyers to investigate the funnywoman's death.
The veteran comedienne passed away at a hospital in New York City in September (14) a week after suffering a cardiac arrest during a routine throat procedure at a clinic in the Big Apple. A New York City medical examiner determined her death was caused by hypoxic arrest as oxygen to her brain was cut off during the procedure. An autopsy proved inconclusive.
Her daughter, Melissa Rivers, has now hired attorneys to look into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy in order to find out what happened.
A representative for law firm Gair, Gair, Conason, Steigman, Mackauf, Bloom & Rubinowitz tells the New York Post, "In order to fully determine all of the facts and circumstances surrounding the death of Joan Rivers, we confirm that our firm has been engaged by Melissa Rivers and her family."
Rapper Waka Flocka Flame has been arrested in Georgia after customs officials found a loaded gun in his luggage as he attempted to board a plane.
The star, real name Juaquin Malphurs, was detained at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Friday morning (10Oct14) and charged with carrying a weapon in a prohibited place. Reports suggest he didn't have a permit for the gun. He is currently in custody at Clayton County jail.
The rapper's love of guns landed him in trouble earlier this year (14) - he is reportedly facing an investigation by probation officials after he was featured in an Instagram.com photo brandishing a firearm. The No Hands hitmaker, whose probation from a previous conviction bans him from being in possession of weapons, posed alongside his wife Tammy Rivera in the shot, in which he can be seen pointing a gun at the camera. The snap, which Rivera uploaded on 3 September (14), went viral and caught the attention of authorities, who contacted Waka Flocka Flame's attorney over the careless picture.
Funnyman Billy Crystal offered up his second TV tribute to a beloved icon in as many months on Thursday (25Sep14) when he honoured retiring baseball legend Derek Jeter.
The life-long New York Yankees fan's recorded video homage to the team's captain aired on U.S. sports news show SportsCenter on ESPN as Jeter was preparing to make his final appearance as a Yankee in the Big Apple.
Crystal said, "My grandmother said there are three things you can always count on: death, taxes and Derek Jeter. Last week was the final time I saw Derek play in person. He turned on a fastball and ripped it deep into the left field seats... He ran around the bases. This was the first home run he'd hit in the stadium this season. I wish I knew what was going on in his mind... He probably just took it in his stride and started thinking of his next at bat... I met with Derek after the game... 'Hey Willy', he said - it's a nickname my high school coach called me that Derek recalled me telling him about in 1998. We talked for a few minutes, like players. We smiled again and I sensed he wanted to go before I said something sad. We hugged goodbye and it was gone... We've had a very special relationship; (former Yankees manager) Joe Torre used to have me work out with the Yankees during the great years - even before World Series games... Derek saw that I could still play and he took infield (practice) with me many times. He never treated me like a celebrity. I was his teammate. To watch him on the field from the stands or on television is one thing; to experience the speed, the skill, the joy he had of playing on the field was like running with wild horses; it's exhilarating." The funnyman concluded, "It's almost over folks. Take a good last look. This is a baseball player."
Crystal can officially call himself a former team-mate of Jeter's after signing a one-day contract to mark his 60th birthday in March, 2008. The comedian batted for the Yankees in a spring training game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Baseball superstar Jeter's final regular season game ever will come on Sunday (28Sep14) when the Yankees complete a three-game series in Boston, Massachusetts against longtime rivals the Red Sox.
The sporting tribute came a month after Crystal delivered a touching send-off to late pal Robin Williams at the Emmy Awards.
Comedienne Joan Rivers has reportedly been placed in a medically-induced coma after suffering cardiac and respiratory failure during a medical procedure on Thursday (28Aug14).
Rivers was getting her vocal cords checked at a clinic in New York when she started fighting for breath. She was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital and placed in a coma as members of her family were alerted to her condition.
The New York Daily News reports doctors will take the 81 year old out of the coma this weekend (30-31Aug14) and assess any damage.
Her aide Graham Reed told the Daily News, "She’s not conscious, but she’s stable." Initial reports suggested Rivers was in a critical condition. A spokesman for the hospital has released a brief statement, which reads: "Her family wants to thank everybody for their outpouring of love and support. We will provide an update on her condition as it becomes available."
The comedienne's daughter Melissa has reportedly flown to New York from her home in California to be at her mother's bedside.
Actor Zachary Quinto has confirmed reports he is dating model Miles Mcmillan.
The Star Trek Into Darkness star has been linked to McMillan since late last year (13), but the two finally acknowledged the romance on Instagram.com over the weekend (23-24Aug14).
Quinto is currently in New York filming indie drama Michael, in which he plays the ex-boyfriend of James Franco's character Michael Glatze, a gay activist who renounced his homosexuality and became a Christian minister.
Taking a break from the set, Quinto posted a photo of McMillan on the photosharing app, along with the caption, "all this pretend is making me miss my real life baby. can't wait to see you soon @milesmcmillan..." A few days later, McMillan, who has worked for designers including Alexander McQueen, Dior Homme and John Varvatos, shared a photo of Quinto holding a small tot in a baby carrier on his chest, and wrote, "My baby with baby! @zacharyquinto"
Quinto previously dated Glee actor Jonathan Groff for three years until their split in 2013.

In his Reddit AMA, Keanu Reeves was gracious, verbose, and formal. He discussed his new movies 47 Ronin and Man of Tai Chi, which is his directorial debut. He also listed some of his favorite things, which all seemed fitting for the famously morose actor. Read some of the best answers from the AMA here.
A little-known fun fact: "For a long time in Los Angeles when I first moved there, when I was 20 years old, it was such a new world and so I saw some guys at a gas station once who had hockey equipment in their car, and I asked them what they were doing, and they said they were playing street hockey, so I asked them if I could play. So I became involved in a street hockey game that took place every weekend for over 10 years, every weekend, red versus black. We would take holidays off and sometimes summers, but the game was going on for over 10 years. That was cool to be a part of. It was a cool thing to have happen. Made some friends."
On filming 47 Ronin: "You know, shooting 47 Ronin was a great experience. It's a story that is very special and close to the Japanese actors, and I could feel that and respected that during the course of the filmmaking. And it brought another element to the filming, it heightened it even more than it usually is. Which was great."
Props he's kept from his movies: "I think I have a coat from the first Matrix. I have the sword from Hamlet, I kept a lot of working scripts, I have the jersey from The Replacements, I've got Constantine's lighter and watch, I have Bill & Ted's shorts (Ted's shorts), I used to have the leather jacket from My Own Private Idaho but I gave that to a friend. And I think that's it."
His reaction to being asked about his favorite movies: "AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! Here's some: Taxi Driver, Apocalypse Now, A Clockwork Orange, Stroszek."
On the memes devoted to him:"My first experience with that was Sad Keanu, and I thought it was funny!"
On the Sad Keanu picture: "I think that a picture can tell a thousand words, and none of them can be right. Or true. I'm absolutely a very happy person."
His favorite books: "Where do I begin? Here are some. As a kid, we can start with the Count of Monte Christo. We could start with the Lord of the Rings. Then we could get into finding as a teenager getting into Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Idiot, Notes from Underground, The Brothers Karamazov, we could get into Jim Thompson, we could go into some William Gibson, then we could do In Search of Lost Time by Proust. And then just getting into the works of Philip K. Dick and recently I was reading Don Delillo, Cosmopolis, I like Updike's the Rabbit Series."
On stargazing: "I believe the other night we had an eclipse of the moon! Which was cool. In the cities, I wish you could see more of the stars, but I always love when I'm in places where you can see that blanket, that twirling, twinkling. That is one of my favorite things."
On his lifestyle: "You know, I've been very fortunate in my life. Which I am grateful for. And I guess it's just to my tastes to keep life as simple as I can."
On air guitar: "You know, I'm not an air guitar afficionado. But once in a while, the air guitar comes out. Especially when you first hear (especially for me) that chord or that moment in the song when the electric guitar cuts in, or blazes out, once in a while you just got to strum all those strings in the air."
His favorite form of martial arts: "You know, I love all martial arts. I don't practice any particular form or style, but yeah, I don't have a favorite...But it was great during the making of Man of Tai Chi, to spend time with the leading man Tiger, who has studied Tai Chi since he was a kid, and it was great to talk about how we could bring some of the ideas of Tai Chi into the story of Man of Tai Chi, and some of the philosophies."
What he's been listening to: "The music I'm listening to right now? Let's see, I just got the new Nine Inch Nails recording. I really like this other band Metz, just got their first album which was great. And I've been listening to a song that I really like from LCD Soundsystem, and the song is 'Someone Great.'"
On Bill and Ted: "Working on Bill & Ted was certainly an excellent adventure. I love those characters. I love the spirit of the film. I like the eternal goodness of these characters. I always thought of them as beautiful fools. They bring a wonder and naivete to the harsh realities of the world. I found them fun to play, and also working with Alex Winter was a great experience. We shared the same view of these characters and the film, and we had a lot of laughs making those movies. And Alex and I are friends."

Things are about to get "handled" in Studio 8H. Emmy-nominated Kerry Washington, who plays the impeccably dressed and intensely fierce Olivia Pope on ABC's Scandal, will be the next dramatic-actress-turned-high-jinxer when she hosts Saturday Night Live on Nov. 2.
Washington, who recently came off of a loss at the Emmys, is ready to trade in her Louis Vuittons for... whatever comedians wear on their feet these days. While it isn't at all new that SNL has tapped a traditionally dramatic actress to be host, it will be interesting to see if the show can pull off a Scandal-themed sketch without it coming off as completely boring. It's not that Scandal isn't a solid show, it's more that it doesn't really have a funny bone to help it transition from a drama to a comedy. At the very least, maybe will get to see Washington have an affair with Jay Pharoah's President Obama.
One things for sure, Washington is going to be dressed to the nines. We can just picture her turning to the costume team and vetoing all of the crazy outfits because, let's be real, Olivia Pope would never trade her fine-fitting pants for, well, anything.
Eminem will be the musical guest on Nov. 2, presumably in an effort to hype up attention for the release of his new album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, on Nov. 5. Edward Norton will host SNL alongside musical guest Janelle Monae on Oct. 26.
