Kim Kardashian chose to call her daughter North West after the bizarre name came to her attention through gossip columns.
The reality TV star welcomed her first child with rapper husband Kanye West last summer (14) and she has now revealed she had no intention of calling her little girl North until she saw it rumored in magazines. Kardashian and West decided it was a good idea, and they made it official after a number of their famous friends mentioned the rumour to them.
She tells Britain's GQ magazine, "It was a rumor in the press and we'd never really considered it seriously. But Kanye and I were having lunch... and Pharrell (Williams) came over to us and said, 'Oh my God, are you guys really going to call your daughter North? That is the best name.' Then a little while later (U.S. Vogue editor) Anna Wintour came over and asked the same thing. She told us: 'North is a genius name.' Kanye and I looked at one another and just laughed. I guess at that point it sort of stuck."
Bosses at U.K. men's magazine GQ were left more than a little red-faced on Tuesday night (02Sep14) when Kim Kardashian walked off with the wrong award. The socialite and reality TV star was honoured with the publication's Woman of the Year trophy at the annual GQ Men of the Year gala in London and she was backstage chatting to the press when she realised she had been handed a prize with Pharrell Williams' name on it.
Asked what she planned to do with the accolade, Kanye West's wife took a loving glance at the trophy and said, "Oh, it says it's for Pharrell."
She then chuckled, "I've been taking photos with that. I hope no one notices that."
The mishap was quickly remedied and Williams collected the right award when he was named Solo Artist of the Year.
Jonah Hill poked fun at an ex-girlfriend while picking up GQ magazine's International Man of the Year honour in London on Tuesday night (02Sep14).
The Wolf of Wall Street star took aim at his sixth grade love while accepting the style trophy from Bradley Cooper. Hill said, "Emily, my first girlfriend... You broke my heart and left it shattered. It was really sad. I know you were young and love is wild and you grow apart, but I'm GQ International Man of the f**king Year!"
The twice Oscar-nominated star joined Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Pharrell Williams, Van Morrison, New Order, new Doctor Who Peter Capaldi, racing driver Lewis Hamilton and Paulo Nutini among the big style winners, while Johnny Depp presented punk veteran Iggy Pop with GQ's Icon Award at the Royal Opera House.
And the women weren't left out - Kim Kardashian West, who was joined on the red carpet by her husband Kanye West, picked up the Woman of the Year prize and stunned in a custom-designed haute couture Ralph & Russo gown. Reminding the world her full name is now Kim Kardashian West, the reality TV star said, "I want to thank GQ for making me Woman of the Year, and my husband for making me feel like woman of the year every day."
Among those handing over the top prizes at the ceremony Lindsay Lohan, Bradley Cooper, Gerard Butler, Rita Ora, Cara Delevingne, Daisy Lowe, Bob Geldof, Pippa Middleton and author E.L. James, who presented her Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan with a Breakthrough Award.

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian's one regret in life is that she attempted to become a musician. The socialite recorded a dance track called Jam (Turn It Up) in 2010, and recruited hip-hop heavyweights The-Dream and Tricky Stewart to produce the song, which came complete with a music video directed by Hype Williams and featuring a cameo from her now-husband, rapper Kanye West.
But looking back at her musical venture, Kardashian tells U.S. talk show Watch What Happens Live she should have listened to those who advised her not to hit the studio in the first place.
She admits, "I cringed. It's definitely... a fun experience and we gave the proceeds to a cancer organisation. But if there's one thing in life that I wish I didn't do... I don't like it when people dabble into things they really shouldn't be (doing). And I don't think I should have. Like, what gave me the right to think I could be a singer? I don't have a good voice!"

Heath Ledger's father has expressed his sadness after the actor who received his son's scholarship fund was arrested on suspicion of drug possession. Rising star Ryan Corr, who appears in Russell Crowe's upcoming movie The Water Diviner, is facing a drug possession charge after police officers in Sydney, Australia allegedly caught him smoking heroin.
He was given a huge career boost in 2011 when he was named the recipient of the Heath Ledger Scholarship Award, which is named in honour of the late Australian actor and funded by famous benefactors including the star's former partner Michelle Williams, Naomi Watts, Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman.
Ledger's father Kim, who is a patron of his son's scholarship fund, has now spoken of his disappointment following news of Corr's arrest.
He says, "It does make me sad to hear that because we have enough problems with alcohol and drugs... I have some empathy for what happens around that situation with families but very little empathy for people that put it in their own mouth. We do what we can to help people but we're not involved in the proactive side of it."
Ledger was just 28 years old when he died from an accidental prescription drug overdose in 2008. Previous winners of the scholarship include Dark Shadows star Bella Heathcote and James Mackay.
Reality TV star Khloe Kardashian has sparked outrage online after sporting a traditional Native American headdress to her niece's lavish birthday bash. Kim Kardashian celebrated her daughter North's first birthday by throwing a festival-themed party in the grounds of her sister's California mansion.
The event included teepees and a ferris wheel, and Khloe got into the spirit by posing for several snaps in a huge feathered bonnet.
One snap featured her sitting in front of a teepee, and she wrote the caption: "Ray of clouds. Chirping of birds. Gurgling of water. Granting desire. One with water."
However, the snaps prompted a backlash from Kardashian's followers on Instagram.com, with several slamming the star for making light of a cultural tradition.
The 29 year old is not the first celebrity to come under fire for wearing a Native American headdress - Pharrell Williams apologised earlier this month (Jun14) after he donned one on the cover of Britain's Elle magazine, and One Direction's Harry Styles also faced a backlash in March (14), when he shared a photo of himself wearing a similar piece on his Instagram.com blog.
Rapper Azealia Banks has put her celebrity feuds behind her by offering an apology to all the stars she has offended. The 212 hitmaker was inspired to make amends with her rivals after performing at Los Angeles' 2014 Pride parade on Sunday (08Jun14).
After her set, she took to Twitter.com to thank her fans, writing, "I had such a good time at Pride today! The crowd showed me so much love I couldn't even take it." Banks then took the opportunity to send a peace offering to all those she has fallen out with in the past.
She didn't mention anyone by name, but she has previously made headlines by quarrelling with Lily Allen, Lil Kim, T.I., Iggy Azalea, Pharrell Williams and Rita Ora, and she came under fire for using a gay slur to describe celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.
She continued, "I sincerely want to apologise to anyone who was hurt by the things I've said in the past... I won't go into it but you KNOW what I'm talking about. "It wasn't nice and it wasn't fair... I hope the entire LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, questioning) community will forgive me."
Tennis ace Serena Williams stunned guests at a beach wedding in Miami, Florida on Saturday (31May14) when she joined in the nuptials wearing just a skimpy swimsuit. The athlete was enjoying a relaxing day at Miami Beach with fellow tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, donning a striking leopard-print , one-piece bathing suit as the pair frolicked in the surf.
The pals noticed a wedding ceremony taking place nearby and decided to gatecrash the event, much to the surprise of the newlyweds.
Williams greeted the couple and their wedding party, and she even posted a photo of herself with them on her Instagram.com account, along with the caption, "Bikini wedding crasher!! Congrats!"
This is the second wedding celebration Williams has attended in the past week - she also attended her pal Kim Kardashian nuptials to Kanye West in Florence, Italy on 24 May (14).
However, the sight of a wedding could have rankled Wozniacki - her fiancee, top golfer Rory McIlroy, called off their engagement just days after they sent out invites.
Australian rapper Iggy Azalea has matched a U.S. pop chart record set by the Beatles after taking her hit Fancy to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. The hip-hop star also lands a spot at number two as a guest on Ariana Grande's Problem, making her the first artist since the Fab Four in 1964 to land the top two places on the chart with her first two Hot 100 hits.
The Beatles managed the feat with I Want to Hold Your Hand and She Loves You over 50 years ago, following their breakthrough appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Azalea also becomes only the 15th act to score a one-two punch at the top of the countdown in the same week, and just the third woman behind Mariah Carey in 2005 and Ashanti in 2002. She also becomes only the fourth solo female rapper ever to top the Hot 100 - Lauryn Hill, Lil' Kim and Ludacris' sidekick Shawnna previously landed at number one.
It's a great early birthday gift for Azalea, who turns 24 on 7 June (14). Her Fancy ends John Legend's reign at the top of the Hot 100 with All of Me. The ballad slips two spots to three on the new chart, while Pharrell Williams' Happy and DJ Snake and Lil Jon's Turn Down for What round out the top five.
Meanwhile, Coldplay have stormed to the top of the U.S. album charts with the biggest first-week sales of 2014. Their new release, Ghost Stories, sold 383,000 copies to become the band's fourth Billboard 200 number one. It's also the first release to top 300,000 sales in a week this year. Country star Brantley Gilbert's Just As I Am debuts at two with impressive first-week sales of 211,000, and Michael Jackson's posthumous release Xscape slides a spot to three. Former number ones the Frozen soundtrack and the Black Keys' Turn Blue round out the new top five.
