Tuesday, Neil Gaiman's latest novel, The Ocean At the End of the Lane, was released to much fanfare. It is the first novel he's written for adults in eight years and everyone is already raving about it (after starting it last night, I'm only 20ish pages in and already love it). To promote his book, Gaiman is embarking on a signing tour that he's calling The Last U.S. Signing Tour. When I saw that it was the last he would do, I immediately bought a ticket to see him at the Brooklyn Academy of Music — and it was a truly wonderful experience. (If you can get a ticket to one of the signings, you should do that right now.)
The evening began with an introduction from Peter Aguero, from The Moth and the BTK Band. He talked about Neil Gaiman for a few minutes, and at one point he said, "He's just a guy named Neil. He's just a dude. He wrote a book about some sand." Aguero's casual nonchalance set the mood for the night; there were 1,200 of us in the theater, but it felt like an intimate evening with a guy named Neil.
The only things on the stage were a podium, two microphones, and a large cutout of the cover of The Ocean At the End of the Lane. Gaiman walked onstage, in his typical all-black attire, and he read to us. He read us Chapter Two of his new book, and it was excellent. Somehow, it reminded me of my own childhood, even though it was nothing like my childhood. Maybe it was that it reminded me of what it was like to be a child, to think in that very pure, yet incredibly complicated, way that children think.
Gaiman also shared his process for crafting the novel. It started out as a short story, he said, which he began writing because he missed his wife, Amanda Palmer. But then it wasn't a short story; it was a novelette. And then it was no longer a novelette, but a novella. By the time he was finished and had done a word count, he realized he had "accidentally written a novel." I think that's a fitting way for him to have written this book, which is, among other things, about children. Children don't generally plan things out ahead of time — they just do what feels right. Accidents sometimes make for the best adventures.
Amanda Palmer, Gaiman's aforementioned wife, also made an appearance (she wrote a blog post about her relationship with Gaiman while he wrote this book; it's worth a read) to sing us a song she had written a few weeks ago. It was sad and it made me cry, but it also made me feel connected, because lots of people were crying.
Following her performance, Palmer stayed to ask Gaiman some questions, both her own and ones from the audience. Gaiman told us how personal this book is and how scared he's been to release it because it's so personal. He also told us how amazing this past week has been because of that. The reviews for The Ocean At the End of the Lane are the best reviews of his life, he said, and he's loved reading them. "These are the kind of reviews that normally you have to have photographs of the reviewer in a compromising position with farm animals," he said. Laughter followed. There was a lot of laughter that night — this guy named Neil is funny.
Gaiman also talked about keeping books alive in a physical format. (I particularly liked this bit because e-books are e-vil.) He told us that "the way books are going to survive as books is by being beautiful." And The Ocean At the End of the Lane is beautiful. The cover is a haunting image of a young girl floating in the ocean. It is blue and dark and perfect and the pages are soft and uneven, giving it an old and worn feel. It also smells fantastic. While much can be said for the convenience of e-books on planes and trains, they can't give you that.
One of my favorite moments of the night was Gaiman's response to whether or not he used semicolons. "Semicolons are wonderful," he said. See everyone, Neil likes semicolons. Will you stop hating on them so much now? (And maybe, while you're at it, learn how to properly use them? They're wonderful!)
I waited until 1:00 in the morning, in a line that wrapped around two corners of the block, for Gaiman to sign my copy of The Ocean At the End of the Lane. I became friends with the people in line with me as we discussed this book, Gaiman's other books, Doctor Who, and four hours worth of many different things. When I finally got to the man of the hour, he signed my book with a smile (and only the slightest hint of exhaustion). I thanked him for a lovely evening, and he thanked me for listening. He seemed genuinely pleased that I was so pleased. It was a short exchange, but it is one I will treasure.
"He's just a dude named Neil," Peter Aguero told us that night. "But he's kind of not."

Make sure you have your Kindles and Nooks fully charged next fall (or some cash in your wallet for those of you who prefer the hassle of physically turning the page) because Courtney Love is writing a memoir. Now I know what you're thinking -- hasn't she told us everything there is to know already? Well apparently not, so the idea of getting even more juicy details from this hardcore nutcase rock star is highly intriguing. Stories about her brief marriage to Kurt Cobain is, in itself, enough for a book deal in my opinion, but apparently Ms. Love has got even more information to share with the world. Lucky us, right?
Here's what we know so far -- HarperCollins announced today that Love has signed with William Morrow to write a memoir, which is set to be released next fall. The book will follow her life from childhood to adulthood and will "set the record straight" about her rather famous past, including what life with Cobain was like, details about her past drug problems, and stories regarding her Hollywood career. As of right now, the memoir remains untitled, but if you have any suggestions please feel free to share them below. How about Lindsay Lohan: This is Your Future? But seriously, my heart goes out to the poor copy editors at HarperCollins -- you have your work cut out for you. Good luck!

After garnering widespread praise (and an Oscar nomination for screenwriting) for his 2000 directorial debut You Can Count on Me Kenneth Lonergan was in-demand. In September 2005 the writer/director began production on a follow-up feature: Margaret which touted Anna Paquin Matt Damon Mark Ruffalo Matthew Broderick Allison Janney as well as legendary filmmakers Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella (The English Patient) as producers. The movie wrapped production in a few months time. The buzz was already growing.
Now six years later the movie is finally hitting theaters. So…what took so long?
The journey to this point hasn't been an easy one and it shows. If a film's shot footage is a block of granite and the editing process is the careful carving that turns it into a statuesque work of art Margaret feels like it was attacked by a blind man with a jackhammer. The film is a cinematic disaster a mishmash of shallow characters overwrought politics and sporadic tones. The story follows Lisa Coen (Paquin) a New York teenager who finds herself drowning in chaos after distracting a bus driver (Ruffalo) causing him to hit and kill a pedestrian (Janney). Initially Lisa tells the police it was all an accident but as time passes regret takes hold and the girl embarks on a mission to take down the man she now regards as a culprit. That's just the tip of the iceberg–along the way Lisa deals with everyday teen stuff: falling for her geometry teacher (Damon) combating her anxiety-ridden actress mother losing her virginity dabbling in drugs debating 9/11 and the Iraq War cultivating a relationship with her father in LA and more. There are about eight seasons of television stuffed into Margaret but even a two and a half hour run time can't make it all click.

The reality TV stars have asked for help choosing a title for their latest project, which will centre around a "glamorous, high profile and complicated family" much like their own.
The book, to be printed by publisher William Morrow, is due to hit shelves in November (11).

LAW & ORDER franchise boss DICK WOLF is set to become a novelist. He has signed a new deal with publishers at William Morrow to pen two books. The first will be a thriller about a New York City terrorist attack.
The Coen brothers could be adding a third Writers Guild of America Award to their impressive trophy case next month if they can nab best original screenplay for their quirky comedy Burn After Reading. The WGA, who announced their nominees today, presented Joel and Ethan Coen with best adapted screenplay last year for No Country for Old Men and best original screenplay in 1997 for Fargo.
Rounding out the contenders this year are Dustin Lance Black for Milk, Woody Allen for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Tom McCarthy for The Visitor and Robert Siegel for The Wrestler.
The WGA’s best adapted screenplay noms include Eric Roth for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with story by Roth and Robin Swicord; Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan for The Dark Knight with story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer; John Patrick Shanley for Doubt, based on the stage play; Peter Morgan for Frost/Nixon, based on his stage play; and Simon Beaufoy for Slumdog Millionaire.
WGA members will meet simultaneously in New York and Los Angeles for the award ceremony on Feb. 7.

With the closing night award ceremonies Sunday, the 15th Annual Fort Lauderdale Int'l Film Festival ended with an impressive slate of features, documentaries and short films.
The festival, from Oct. 16-Nov. 12, saw attendance total 54,000 during the 28-day run. The sold-out Opening Night event Nov. 3 started with a conversation with indie filmmaker John Waters, followed by the U.S. premiere of "Il Cielo Cade (The Sky Is Falling)," directed by Antonio and Andrea Frazzi and starring Isabella Rossellini.
The film is about life in a small Tuscany town during the start of the Nazi occupation and won the festival's best foreign language film award.
Two other notable international films screened during the festival were well received. "Coronation," directed by Silvio Caiozzi, was chosen to represent Chile as its Foreign Language Oscar entry and had its U.S. premiere at the festival. The story revolves around a 90-year-old grand dame of the wealthy Santiago family and how the family is deteriorating. Maria Canepa, as the matriarch, won the best supporting actress award at the festival.
The U.S. premiere of "A Time for Drunken Horses," directed by Bahman Ghobadi, was screened to a standing room only audience and was selected as the Foreign Language Oscar entry representing Iran. The film follows a young Kurdish boy and his impoverished family as they fight to survive on the Iran-Iraqi border. It won the festival's Audience Award.
Other award winners were David Mamet's "State and Main," a searing and hysterical look at the making of a big budget film in a small Maine town, which won the best film award. William H. Macy, portraying the director, won the best supporting male award. The Lifetime Achievement Award went to actor Peter Falk and the Spirit of Independent's Award went to Rob Morrow (of "Northern Exposure" fame), whose directorial debut film "Maze," screened at the festival.
The closing night film, "Shadow of the Vampire," played to mixed reactions. The film is a fictional account of the making of the German silent classic "Nosferatu" in which director F.W. Murnau (John Malkovich) casts a real-life vampire (Willem Dafoe) as his villain. Although it did not win any festival awards, Dafoe's performance will be watched come Oscar time.
