Robert Downey, Jr. became a bizarre zen master during an appearance on America's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday (08Oct14) by dressing up in a traditional robe and donning a long wig to take part in an Intense Staredown comedy sketch. The actor sat silent opposite host Fallon on a fake mountain set and contorted his face in a series of hilarious expressions as a recorded voiceover shared his thoughts of wisdom about everything from world peace to stuffed-crust pepperoni pizza.
Actress Polly Bergen has died, aged 84. The Emmy Award winner passed away on Saturday morning (20Sep14) at her home in Connecticut. No further details were given, but Bergen is believed to have spent several years battling emphysema.
A statement from her publicist Judy Katz reads, "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of legendary actress and long-time friend and client, Polly Bergen. She died peacefully at her home in Southbury, Connecticut... surrounded by her family, long-time personal manager, Jan McCormack and close friends."
Bergen rose to fame in the 1950s, winning an Emmy Award in 1958 for her role in U.S. TV series Playhouse 90, while she also appeared in her own variety series The Polly Bergen Show, which ran from 1957 to 1958.
Her movie roles included turns opposite Doris Day and James Garner in 1963's Move Over, Darling, while she also appeared with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum in the original 1961 Cape Fear and with Johnny Depp in 1990's Cry-Baby.
In later years, she appeared in popular U.S. show Desperate Housewives playing Felicity Huffman's onscreen mother, and she also acted alongside the late James Gandolfini in The Sopranos.
A representative for music mogul Clive Davis has blasted allegations suggesting he has been having an affair with a married woman after her estranged husband slapped him with legal papers. South Carolina businessman Tig H. Krekel filed the lawsuit in New York's Manhattan Supreme Court this week (begs08Sep14), asking a judge to hold Davis in contempt after he failed to respond to a subpoena requesting personal records.
Krekel is seeking access to the 82 year old's diary, travel itinerary, phone records, letters, texts and emails in a bid to prove his claim that the legendary producer has been involved in an "illicit relationship" with his fashion executive wife, Rosanna, who allegedly accompanied Davis to numerous black tie events and vacationed with him onboard his yacht in Europe earlier this year (14).
Rosanna Krekel filed for divorce in South Carolina, seeking spousal support from her ex - but he is determined to prove she was unfaithful. State law prohibits a spouse from receiving alimony if he or she has committed adultery.
Rosanna's lawyer, Robert Rosen, has denied her husband's accusations, stating, "There has been no adulterous relationship between Clive Davis and Rosanna Krekel. He's been a close family friend of Rosanna and her mother and her brother for many, many years."
And a spokesman for Davis, who gave Rosanna away at her 2008 wedding, tells the New York Post, "The allegations are beyond ridiculous. This frivolous lawsuit is clearly an attempt to embarrass his former spouse."
The record industry icon, who has guided the careers of Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Kelly Clarkson, among others, has been married and divorced twice.
He came out as bisexual last year (13) after detailing a long romance with a male doctor in his 2013 autobiography.
Gwyneth Paltrow's star-studded Stand Up To Cancer telethon on Friday (05Sep14) raised a whopping $109 million (£64 million) for charity. The actress, who served as show producer, gathered celebrity pals including Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Alba, Halle Berry, Reese Witherspoon, Rob Lowe, Sofia Vergara, Will Ferrell, Robert Downey, Jr., Kerry Washington, Mike Myers, Jon Hamm and Pierce Brosnan, among many others, to help her appeal to the public for donations and man the social media outlets in Los Angeles to boost funds for the organisation, which supports research into groundbreaking new cancer treatments.
Charity totals for the fourth biennial event, which was broadcast live across the U.S. and Canada, have since been tallied and the amount raised this year (14) exceeded 2012's fundraiser by $28 million (£16.5 million).
The hour-long broadcast also featured performances from the Dave Matthews Band, The Who, Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson and rappers Common and Lupe Fiasco.
The Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) telethon has now raised more than $369 million (£217 million) since its launch in 2008.
Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston, Rob Lowe and Reese Witherspoon joined forces on Friday night (05Sep14) to raise money and awareness for the Stand Up To Cancer charity at a star-studded telethon. The fourth biennial event, broadcast live in the U.S. and Canada from Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre, featured a slew of famous faces, including Kerry Washington, Jon Hamm and Mike Myers, calling on viewers to give generously to the organisation in order to continue supporting research into groundbreaking new cancer treatments.
Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson boosted awareness online by engaging with fans on Twitter.com as Fast & Furious' Jordana Brewster participated in a Facebook question and answer session, during which two male fans proposed to the married actress.
Angie Harmon, comedian Dane Cook, Magic Mike hunk Joe Manganiello and Scandal star Tony Goldwyn were among the celebrities who helped man the phones and accept live donations, while Robert Downey, Jr. sent in a video message and Matthew McConaughey, Zooey Deschanel, Bradley Cooper and funnyman Danny McBride all took part in a humorous, pre-recorded cancer awareness public service announcement (PSA).
However, one of the most touching celebrity appearances of the night came from former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan, who recalled losing his first wife, Australian actress Cassandra Harris, to the disease in 1991, followed by his stepdaughter Charlotte last year (13).
Addressing the audience, he said, "To watch someone you love have his or her life eaten away, bit by bit, by this insidious disease, that kind of sorrow becomes an indelible part of your psyche.
"I held the generous, strong, beautiful hand of my first wife, Cassie, as ovarian cancer took her life much too soon. And just last year, I held the hand of my funny, wonderful daughter Charlotte before she too died from this wretched, inherent disease."
Thyroid cancer survivor Sofia Vergara also gave a moving speech towards the end of the hour-long show, urging audience members to shine a light for loved ones battling the disease as she and Kevin Bacon introduced the event's closing performance from rappers Lupe Fiasco and Common and singer Jennifer Hudson, belting out their new cancer survivors' anthem, Remission.
Dave Matthews, Ariana Grande and The Who, via satellite from London, also performed during the telethon.
But the night didn't go quite as smoothly as planned - a live link-up with Ben Stiller from Toronto, Canada had to be axed at the last minute due to a technical problem, prompting presenter Mike Myers to quip, "Evidently, lightening has struck something in Toronto, because I am doomed never to have a live telecast without controversy. I think it's Hurricane Kanye has hit Toronto... (sic)".
The Austin Powers star was famously left dumbstruck back in 2005, when he stood by as rapper Kanye West notoriously lashed out at then-U.S. President George W. Bush in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, declaring, "George Bush doesn't care about black people" during a live TV fundraiser to help the victims of the New Orleans, Louisiana natural disaster.

Robert Plant split from his long-term partner Patty Griffin last year (13).
The Led Zeppelin legend was rumoured to have married the singer in secret in 2013 after setting up home together in Texas and collaborating on a number of projects, but Griffin denied the speculation saying, "We're not legally married, no." However, Plant has now revealed the relationship came to an end, telling Britain's Radar magazine he experienced a shift both "culturally and slightly spiritually" and ploughed his heartbreak into his new music.
He adds of a recent trip back to his native U.K. with Griffin, "She didn't share my penchant for cider and the Black Country (English area) character I became after four pints of Thatchers (cider). My feelings are very much ones of sadness and regret."
The publication reports Plant's song House of Love, from his upcoming album Lullaby and... The Ceaseless Roar, is about the break-up and starts with the line "Leaving was so hard."
Country music legend Willie Nelson has urged lawmakers and customs officials in his native Texas to "take care" of the kids who have illegally crossed the state's border with Mexico. Reports suggest some 60,000 youngsters fleeing violence in Central America have crossed the Texas border in the past year. They are being held in makeshift holding cells while the authorities decide what to do with them.
Many have arrived without parents or guardians and Nelson has called on those responsible for the kids to remember they're just scared children.
He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "I've been watching and the only thing we can do is take care of those kids, whatever it takes. Take them in, give them some medical attention. I'm sure there are homes all over the country that would be glad to take care of one or two kids.
"They're scared. They're being mistreated, and it's not a good way to start off your life. But it's a good opportunity for us to show a little bit of humanitarianism and take care of those kids. I know a lot of people want to send them back. I guess the closer you are to the situation, the more extreme emotions you have about it, but it seems to me the old golden rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you... Treat those kids like they were your kids."
And Nelson has criticised President Barack Obama for not visiting the border during his recent visit to Austin, Texas, where the U.S. leader partied with stars at moviemaker Robert Rodriguez's home.
The singer adds, "To be that close (to the border) and not go is kind of crazy, I think. But I'm sure he had all kinds of advisers, and he quit listening to me a long time ago."
