They're making a Gilligan's Island movie. Josh Gad is in it. This is the news we find ourselves facing today.
Gilligan's Island purists (there's a purist for everything) are probably hollering over the news of Gad at the center of this production. "The Book of Mormon kid as Gilligan? That's conflicts with my purism!" But as of yet, we're not entirely sure who Gad is set to play. The assumption: Gilligan. The official word: TBA. So, really, there are seven possible ways this movie can go...
Josh Gad as GilliganThe most straightforward adaptation of the sitcom, with Gad playing the bumbling title character who consistently thwarts his friends' attempts at escaping the confines of their desert island prison. Sight gags, goofy repartee, wacky laughs, and a simplistic message about believing in yourself and the people you love. Maybe Gad's Gilligan has a romantic flight with hometown gal Mary Ann? That'd sell. We mean, foster artistic merit. Directed by Shawn Levy.

If Gad takes on the role of the Skipper, a maritime man who has quite a few years on the rest of the characters, we might be seeing something in the vein of a Disney Channel vacation flick. Gad and his nephew "Gil" operate an ocean excursion for privileged youths and wind up on a crazy island adventure! Gad must wrangle these preteens (and teach them a few lessons about growing up) in this family-friendly 90-minute TV movie (with commercials). Rally the the small nation of people that wrote and directed the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs movies.

Josh Gad as The Millionaire The quirky indie! We've seen a lot of stylistic liberties taken with old television programs and books, with an extra dose of contemporary eccentricity injected into properties like Dark Shadows or Fantastic Mr. Fox. Casting Gad as the (Internet) millionaire would kick off this new Gilligan with that dry, satirical flavor we find in so many offbeat indie flicks, rendering the entire island adventure a venue for deadpan non sequiturs and (quite appropriately) ukulele solos. Is Noah Baumbach available? No? Damn.

Josh Gad as His WifeThe broader-than-broad cross-dressing comedy! The kind of humor you find on the cutting room floor of Yogi Bear. If there's time to work in a plot between instances of human (and animal) flatulence, so be it. Overweight Gad playing the butt of every joke as Thurston Howell III's hilariously unattractive wife? That's not just comedy, it's America! Brett Ratner is already signed on for a three-picture deal.

Josh Gad as The Movie Star The classy Oscar candidate! Occasionally, a TV adaptation (i.e., The Fugitive) will reach far and beyond the constraints of its source material and actually churn out awards-caliber material. Casting Gad as a subversion of what we view as the epitome of traditional "celebrity" already lends itself to a more poignant and pensive Gilligan's Island than any of us might have anticipated. We're talking Sophia Coppola territory here. A drama that really says something about what it means for a septet of disparate humans to fend for themselves on a desert island.

Josh Gad as The Professor The sci-fi adventure! Gilligan's Island, less a few anthropomorphic monkeys and some liberties taken with coconut-based technology, was rooted in the laws of our universe. But you can say the same for Scooby Doo and The Brady Bunch, and they went on to face real monsters and impending asteroids in their film incarnations. Sometimes, the step toward the big screen warrants an inclusion of fantasy. Maybe the island isn't just uncharted, but cursed! Or the home of an undiscovered breed of monsters! Or a space-and-time-jumping beacon of electromagnetic energy that stands as an extended metaphor for the plight of the human soul! We can see the Bad Robot logo now...

Josh Gad as Mary Ann Have you ever seen Head? The strange, cerebral, explosively meta deconstruction of the 1960s musical sitcom The Monkees? Well, we're thinking that the Gilligan's Island form would slink perfectly into these margins. It's surreal, it's ripe for analysis, it even has been suggested to represent the Seven Deadly Sins with each of its characters. Gad's casting as Mary Ann already raises an eyebrow, but a progressive and artful director might well give us something worthy of some deep dives. Charlie Kaufman, make Gilligan's Island about US.

Every once in a while an up-and-coming actress catches your eye, and you can’t help but wonder who she is and where she came from. When that happens, it’s a good idea to start doing some research before she sweeps in under the radar and takes over the world (à la little Chloë Grace Moretz). The trailer for the new romantic comedy That Awkward Moment was recently released, and along with a few familiar faces (Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan) the film stars Imogen Poots, a young British beauty who has some exciting new projects in the works.
First of all — gotta love that name, right? Imogen Poots sounds like she was destined to live a life of awesomeness and -- considering the actors that she’s been working with -- all that awesomeness is definitely unfolding for her. It looks like 2014 is going to be an exciting year for the 24-year-old who may be best known right now for her role in the 2007 zombie film 28 Weeks Later. But we suspect that within a year she’ll be far more recognizable; she’s starring alongside Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson in Squirrels To The Nuts (directed by Oscar-nominee Peter Bogdanovich), and she has joined the star-studded cast of Terrence Malick’s highly-anticipated Knight Of Cups. Even though Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Joe Manganiello and Cate Blanchett will cast some mighty strong shadows, we’re looking forward to seeing Poots shine on screen.
Most recently the actress nabbed the lead for Todd Field’s Beautiful Ruins, an adaptation of the bestselling novel. Todd Field is the same guy who brought us Little Children back in 2006 (one of Kate Winslet’s best movies), so it’s safe to say we can get really excited about this film and this new leading lady. Remember the name folks: Imogen Poots, headed for a 2014 takeover.
The below trailer for Hick looks to be the latest display of Chloë Moretz's very mature acting talent. Despite this, it is hard to forget that the actress was born in 1997. That's the same year Titanic came out. That's three years after the Doug left Nickelodeon. She was one when Dawson's Creek premiered and five when Spider-Man hit theaters. The first James Bond movie she'd have been old enough to remember is Die Another Day, and her only Batmen have been Val Kilmer and Christian Bale. The girl is young.
And yet, her career thus far has been marked by unquestionably adult roles. Her breakout performance in Kick-Ass had the young star brutally murdering a heap of hulking bad guys, and her recurring 30 Rock role has her facing off with Alec Baldwin, a spiritual peer despite being 40 years her senior, in a race for the executive chair over NBC. But Kick-Ass and 30 Rock are fantasy worlds; the removal from reality allows for Moretz's onscreen actions to be taken with a grain of salt and appreciated as whimsy. Hick, however, looks much grittier, and, as a result, much more frightening.
The talented Moretz plays a runaway who leaves her disastrous Nebraska living environment to embark on a quest for the glitz of Las Vegas, with a gun in hand. She wields her weapon, tossing threats and involving herself in situations that a full grown bodybuilder would be wise to avoid; dangerous company includes Blake Lively, Eddie Redmayne, and Moretz's 30 Rock adversary Baldwin. It might be uncomfortable to watch the young-in-real-life starlet get tangled up in this pit of corruption, but it is hard to deny that her talents for this sort of character are exemplary and that we should probably never cross her path.

Making an earnest cinematic argument for the immortality of the soul and the existence of an afterlife without delving into mushy sentimentality is a difficult task for even the most gifted and “serious” of filmmakers. Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson discovered as much last year when his sappy grandiose adaptation of the ethereal bestseller The Lovely Bones opened to scathing reviews. Critics by and large tend to bristle at movie renderings of what may or may not await them in that Great Arthouse in the Sky.
And yet filmmakers seem determined to keep trying. The latest to make the attempt is Clint Eastwood who throughout his celebrated directorial career has certainly demonstrated a firm grasp of the death part of the equation. His filmography with a few notable exceptions practically revels in it: of his recent oeuvre Invictus is the only work that doesn’t deal with mortality in some significant manner. With his new film Hereafter Eastwood hopes to add immortality to his thematic resume.
The film's narrative centers on three characters each of whom has intimate experience with death and loss. Their stories in true Eastwood fashion can ostensibly be labeled Sad Sadder and Saddest: Marie (Cecile de France) is a French TV news anchor who’s haunted by disturbing flashbacks after she loses consciousness — and briefly her life — during a natural disaster; George (Matt Damon looking credibly schlubby) is a former psychic whose skills as a medium are so potent (the slightest touch from another human being triggers an instant powerful psychic connection a la Rogue from X-Men) they’ve left him isolated and alone; Marcus is a London schoolboy who retreats into a somber shell after losing his twin brother in a tragic car accident (both brothers are played rather impressibly by real-life twins Frankie and George McLaren).
Humanity offers little help to these troubled souls surrounding them with skeptics charlatans users and deadbeats none of whom are particularly helpful with crises of an existential nature. Luckily there are otherworldly options. Peter Morgan's script assumes psychics out-of-body experiences and other such phenomena to be real and legitimate but in a non-denominational Coast-to-Coast AM kind of way. Unlike Jackson’s syrupy CGI-drenched glimpses of the afterlife Eastwood’s visions of the Other Side are vague and eery — dark fuzzy silhouettes of the departed set against a white background. Only Damon’s character George seems capable of drawing meaning from them which is why he’s constantly sought out by grief-stricken folks desperate to make contact with loved ones who’ve recently passed on. He’s John Edward only real (and not a douche).
Marie and Marcus appear destined to find him as well but only as the last stop on wearisome circuitous and often heartbreaking spiritual journeys that together with George’s hapless pursuit of a more temporal connection (psychic ability it turns out can be a wicked cock-blocker) consume the bulk of Hereafter’s running time. We know the three characters’ paths must inevitably intersect but Morgan’s script stubbornly forestalls this eventuality testing our patience for nearly two ponderous and maudlin hours and ultimately building up expectations for a climax Eastwood can’t deliver at least not without sacrificing any hope of credulity.
It should be noted that Hereafter features a handful of genuinely touching moments thanks in great part to the film's tremendous cast. And its finale is refreshingly upbeat. Unfortunately it also feels forced and terribly unsatisfying. Eastwood an established master of all things tragic and forlorn struggles mightily to mount a happy ending. (Which in my opinion is much more challenging than a sad or ambiguous one.) After prompting us to seriously ponder life’s ultimate question Eastwood’s final answer seems to be: Don’t worry about it.
