Wunderland: Following the (success?) of their upcoming series Beauty and the Beast, the CW folks are developing a contemporary drama based on Alice in Wonderland. The show will focus on a young female detective in Los Angeles, who discovers that there is another world that exists underneath this Godless city. The Playboy Club creator Chad Hodge will pen the script, and executive produce with McG and and Peter Johnson. [Deadline]
Criminal Justice: Tony Soprano will return to HBO! Well, sort of. James Gandolfini has taken on a starring role in Criminal Justice — a crime drama project based on a British hit — that has officially been given a pilot order. Gandolfini will play jailhouse lawyer Jack Stone, and the show will be loosely based on its British counterpart, which chronicled the experiences of people charged with murder as they made their way through the justice system. Color us intrigued. [Deadline]
The Vampire Diaries: An Olympic champion is headed to Mystic Falls! Gabby Douglas announced her TVD fandom to the world this summer, and her loyalty has paid off — she is currently in Atlanta, filming an episode. The episode is slated to air Nov. 29, and she will not be playing herself. [THR]
Homeland: Looks like an Oscar winner is joining a surefire soon-to-be Emmy winner! F. Murray Abraham will recur on Homeland later this season as Dar Adul, a "brilliant intelligence operative in his 60-70’s. He has worked all over the world for the Special Activities Division of the CIA.” [EW]

In This Means War – a stylish action/rom-com hybrid from director McG – Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) and Chris Pine (Star Trek) star as CIA operatives whose close friendship is strained by the fires of romantic rivalry. Best pals FDR (Pine) and Tuck (Hardy) are equally accomplished at the spy game but their fortunes diverge dramatically in the dating realm: FDR (so nicknamed for his obvious resemblance to our 32nd president) is a smooth-talking player with an endless string of conquests while Tuck is a straight-laced introvert whose love life has stalled since his divorce. Enter Lauren (Reese Witherspoon) a pretty plucky consumer-products evaluator who piques both their interests in separate unrelated encounters. Tuck meets her via an online-dating site FDR at a video-rental store. (That Lauren is tech-savvy enough to date online but still rents movies in video stores is either a testament to her fascinating mix of contradictions or more likely an example of lazy screenwriting.)
When Tuck and FDR realize they’re pursuing the same girl it sparks their respective competitive natures and they decide to make a friendly game of it. But what begins as a good-natured rivalry swiftly devolves into romantic bloodsport with both men using the vast array of espionage tools at their disposal – from digital surveillance to poison darts – to gain an edge in the battle for Lauren’s affections. If her constitutional rights happen to be violated repeatedly in the process then so be it.
Lauren for her part remains oblivious to the clandestine machinations of her dueling suitors and happily basks in the sudden attention from two gorgeous men. Herein we find the Reese Witherspoon Dilemma: While certainly desirable Lauren is far from the irresistible Helen of Troy type that would inspire the likes of Tuck and FDR to risk their friendship their careers and potential incarceration for. At several points in This Means War I found myself wondering if there were no other peppy blondes in Los Angeles (where the film is primarily set) for these men to pursue. Then again this is a film that wishes us to believe that Tom Hardy would have trouble finding a date so perhaps plausibility is not its strong point.
When Lauren needs advice she looks to her boozy foul-mouthed best friend Trish (Chelsea Handler). Essentially an extension of Handler’s talk-show persona – an acquired taste if there ever was one – Trish’s dialogue consists almost exclusively of filthy one-liners delivered in rapid-fire succession. Handler does have some choice lines – indeed they’re practically the centerpiece of This Means War’s ad campaign – but the film derives the bulk of its humor from the outrageous lengths Tuck and FDR go to sabotage each others’ efforts a raucous game of spy-versus-spy that carries the film long after Handler’s shtick has grown stale.
Business occasionally intrudes upon matters in the guise of Heinrich (Til Schweiger) a Teutonic arms dealer bent on revenge for the death of his brother. The subplot is largely an afterthought existing primarily as a means to provide third-act fireworks – and to allow McGenius an outlet for his ADD-inspired aesthetic proclivities. The film’s action scenes are edited in such a manic quick-cut fashion that they become almost laughably incoherent. In fairness to McG he does stage a rather marvelous sequence in the middle of the film in which Tuck and FDR surreptitiously skulk about Lauren's apartment unaware of each other's presence carefully avoiding detection by Lauren who grooves absentmindedly to Montel Jordan's "This Is How We Do It." The whole scene unfolds in one continuous take – or is at least craftily constructed to appear as such – captured by one very agile steadicam operator.
Whatever his flaws as a director McG is at least smart enough to know how much a witty script and appealing leads can compensate for a film’s structural and logical deficiencies. He proved as much with Charlie’s Angels a film that enjoys a permanent spot on many a critic’s Guilty Pleasures list and does so again with This Means War. The film coasts on the chemistry of its three co-stars and only runs into trouble when the time comes to resolve its romantic competition which by the end has driven its male protagonists to engage in all manner of underhanded and duplicitous activities. This Means War being a commercial film – and likely an expensive one at that – Witherspoon's heroine is mandated to make a choice and McG all but sidesteps the whole thorny matter of Tuck and FDR’s unwavering dishonesty not to mention their craven disregard for her privacy. (They regularly eavesdrop on her activities.) For all their obvious charms the truth is that neither deserves Lauren – or anything other than a lengthy jail sentence for that matter.

LeAnn Rimes' new husband plays lawyer Nick Dalton in the upcoming NBC series, which is based on Hugh Hefner's famous Chicago, Illinois hotspot in the 1960s.
The programme is not due to air until September (11), but members of the Parents Television Council are campaigning to have the show axed altogether, insisting it "glamorises" the pornography industry.
But Chad Hodge, executive producer of The Playboy Club, is adamant there is nothing too explicit on the show - because it's focused on the workers at the members-only club and not Hefner's Playboy publication.
He says, "It's mild compared to anything else on television. It really has nothing to do… with anything racy or trying to be exploitative, that's not the purpose of the show or the spirit of the show."
And The Playboy Club star Naturi Naughton has also defended the new series, adding, "It’s empowering because these girls are smart, they’re going to school, they’re buying property."
In an attempt by male NBC executives to convince their wives that they subscribe to Playboy just for the articles, the network has ordered a pilot called Playboy, an hour-long drama set in Playboy clubs in the '60s. The story is based in Chicago, revolving around a group of women who work as Playboy bunnies. Chad Hodge (Tru Calling) wrote the script. Playboy will investigate similar themes as AMC's critical darling Mad Men (which shows how women were treated so wonderfully in the '60s), and according to Variety, will explore "America's mores and the coming sexual revolution."
NBC isn't the first network to ride Mad Men's coattails. Starz just ordered Magic City, a 10-episode season taking place in the '60s in Miami while ABC has Pan Am, an examination of airlines in the '60s, in the works. Apparently, America just loves looking at how sexist it used to be.
Fela!, about the life of revered African world music star Fela Kuti, will go up against Green Day's American Idiot, Memphis, and Million Dollar Quartet in the coveted Best Musical category at the 64th annual prizegiving, which honours the best on Broadway.
Meanwhile, Grammer and Hodge, who star as a camp gay couple in La Cage, will compete against Sean Hayes (Promises, Promises), Chad Kimball (Memphis) and Sahr Ngaujah (Fela!) for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical.
The evening is sure to be a star-studded event, with Hollywood actors Jude Law (Hamlet), Alfred Molina (Red), Liev Schreiber (A View from the Bridge), Christopher Walken (A Behanding in Spokane) and Denzel Washington (Fences) pitted against each other for the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play award.
Washington's co-star Viola Davis will battle it out in the category for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play, against Valerie Harper (Looped), Linda Lavin (Collected Stories), Laura Linney (Time Stands Still) and Jan Maxwell (The Royal Family).
Catherine Zeta-Jones (A Little Night Music), Kate Baldwin (Finian's Rainbow), Sherie Rene Scott (Everyday Rapture), Montego Glover (Memphis) and Christiane Noll (Ragtime) received nods for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, and Scarlett Johansson's Broadway debut in A View from the Bridge has earned her a nomination for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play.
Nominations for Best Play include In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play), Next Fall, Red and Time Stands Still.
The winners will be announced on 13 June (10) at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

ABC is bringing Jennifer Lopez’s last big box office hit, Maid in Manhattan, to TV--and not just to show on a Friday night!
The Disney-owned network is collaborating with singer/actress Lopez to develop a TV series based on the 2002 movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Lopez will executive produce the hour-long dramedy series, whose pilot will be written by veteran TV scribe Chad Hodge.
Hodge told THR, "The show is a different maid in a different Manhattan," and added that Lopez "will be very integral in the pilot and series."
Lopez, who played the struggling-single-mother title character in the movie, is not expected to reprise her role, but whichever actress steps in to take her place will be looking at a similar character and storyline with a little more emphasis on coworker relationships, Hodge said.
J. Lo has suffered through a well-documented string of commercial and critical failures, including last year’s El Cantante and Bordertown. She will next be seen in 2009's Love and Other Impossible Pursuits and The Governess.
