"I think maybe it was an unfortunate event, but she apologised and I feel like we can all move on." Actress Uzo Aduba holds no hard feelings against Julianne Hough after the blonde beauty stepped out for an early Halloween party wearing 'blackface' make-up to portray the TV actress' Crazy Eyes character from drama series Orange Is The New Black.
Actress Julianne Hough became a worried aunt while researching her role as a burn victim in her latest movie, after learning how easily fires around the home break out. The Rock of Ages star spent time with blaze survivors while she was preparing for her role in Paradise - and many of the people she turned to for advice were kids left scarred by mistakes made around the house.
She says, "Most of them were in accidents from household fires like cooking or tea falling and getting third degree burns; putting a turkey in the deep fryer and having it (the oil) spill.
"I was calling all my sisters and my nieces and nephews saying, 'Make sure you put this away and that away. This is way more dangerous than you think'. You take for granted that it could happen to anybody."
She admits that a lot of the research she did was tough: "It's literally like the survivors have been barbecued and they can't move. Their skin will tear or their joints were really sore.
"I got to walk around with just the burn bandages on to see how people reacted and responded and they don't want to make eye contact and they get uncomfortable. A lot of these burn survivors said, 'I would rather someone say, hey what happened, rather than make me feel like I'm scary or I'm ugly'.
"It completely changes who they are on the inside and nobody really knows that. People are so obsessed with the outside that they don't fully understand what's going on on the inside."
Actress Julianne Hough is still devastated after sparking a storm of controversy over the weekend by dressing up as inmate character Crazy Eyes from TV show Orange Is The New Black for a Halloween costume party, according to her dancer brother. The Rock of Ages star has already issued a grovelling apology after stepping out wearing offensive 'blackface' make-up to the bash on Friday (25Oct13), but her brother Derek insists she's still "beside herself" for stepping out with the ill-advised look.
Critics slammed Hough for her appearance and some even accused her of racism, prompting Hough to take to Twitter in an attempt to explain herself, writing, "I am a huge fan of the show Orange Is The New Black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize."
And she's still struggling with her costume choice.
Brother Derek, who is a regular on TV show Dancing With the Stars, says, "It wasn't the brightest moment in her life and hopefully it's a blip.
"She didn't mean anything by it... She's my sweet little sister, breaks my heart... She is so unbelievably sorry and so apologetic.
"She is just beside herself... Lesson learned."
Over the weekend, ex-girlfriend of Ryan Secreast Julianne Hough went to a costume party dressed as Uzo Aduba's character from Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, "Crazy Eyes." Unfortunately, she chose to represent said character by putting herself in blackface. I suggest screaming into a pillow for the next six to eight minutes, or however long it takes to get the rage of ignorance out of your system.
Feel better? Let us continue.
People are understandably appalled at Hough's choice to wear blackface to represent the character. But more even than by her racial insensitivities are we offended by Hough's complete lack of effort in putting together a respectable costume. Now, it's not inherently offensive that Hough wanted to dress as Crazy Eyes this Halloween. Who wouldn't? She's one of the most recognizable (and great) characters from the last year of pop culture. But both the devil, and the ability to offend pretty much everyone, is in the details, and that's where Hough failed. Miserably. There is literally zero effort here besides picking up a pair of orange scrubs and meticulously applying blackface. Come on, Julianne. Everyone knows you're terrible, but you're better than that.
If you're dressing as a pop culture character, you have to get it right. First of all, Crazy Eyes doesn't even wear an orange jumpsuit! As established in the pilot episode of the series or a basic Google Image search, the orange clothes are for the new inmates, while the rest of the prison is outfitted in khaki. Second, look at those sloppy, blond buns on her head. In the 2.5 seconds it took to put those together, wouldn't it have been easier to have a hairstylist friend replicate a little more accurately or even pick up a wig?
And another thing: props. Props are the key when it comes to costumes (ethnicity-bending ones, especially). And so much of Crazy Eyes' character is tied up in those props. Where are the dandelions? A plate of pie to throw? Also acceptable would be a huge barn coat, a copy of Shakespeare, or a mop. The last step would be to play the character. Her bold declarations of love and her wide eyed, earnest stare are what made everyone collectively fall in love with her eccentricity this summer. All of these things would be more helpful than painting of a layer of white-girl bronzer. What should be clear now is that Crazy Eyes (and pretty much any character fun enough to dress as for Halloween) would never be defined first and foremost by the color of their skin. Want to go as Heisenberg? Well, then a porkpie hat, sunglasses, and goatee will be far more helpful than the amount of melanin you have.
If you, like Julianne, aren't up to the simple challenge of portraying a character without fixating on their skin color, then simply take a backseat and play someone else. Looking at a shot of Hough leaving the party, it looks like this was a group costume. Okay, she was with a Piper, a Pornstache, and an Alex. (You're not the Piper in your group of friends? Come on, girl. That's just sad.) Anyway, that leaves Pennsatucky, Morello, Red, Nicky, Tricia, even Yoga Jones. All white characters and all super fun to dress as for a night. But perhaps Hough was just sensitive enough to realize that it might seem odd if she and her group of friends chose to only portray the white characters in such a diverse show. Well, if you're not quite sensitive enough to realize that blackface is never the answer, why not try going as the cast of any other critically acclaimed television series (except Scandal. Love you, Kerry W.) instead? You should have absolutely no problem finding a white, skinny, blonde haired blue eyed character to play. If this is your approach to a black character, that seems much more your speed. Good luck next year!
Actress Julianne Hough has issued a grovelling apology after she stepped out wearing 'blackface' makeup to a Halloween party in Hollywood on Friday (25Oct13). The Rock of Ages star provoked a storm of controversy after she dressed up as inmate character Crazy Eyes from Orange Is The New Black and was photographed wearing dark foundation on her face.
Critics slammed Hough for her 'blackface' appearance, with some even accusing her of racism - but she has now taken to her Twitter.com page to apologise and profess her admiration for actress Uzo Aduba, who plays Crazy Eyes in the comedy series.
She writes, "I am a huge fan of the show Orange Is The New Black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created.
"It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize."
There’s nothing more depressing, more financially damaging than trying to dress like a celebrity. Many of us have attempted such feats, splurging on the occasional Prada shades when we were in college. But as the years go by and real responsibilities start kicking in (like, ya know, apartments and diapers and whatnot) it gets to be more and more impossible to keep up with these celebs. However, occasionally, many of them leave the couture labels behind and hit up the kinds of stores that lots of us can afford — which is really nice of them. Rihanna, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Kate Bosworth, Julianne Hough, and even First Lady Michele Obama have all been spotted in beautiful threads from these three amazingly affordable spots. Which is awesome for those of us who want to dress just like them, on maybe 1/25 of their budgets.
They’ve teamed up with the dopeness that is Azealia Banks, and they’re frequented by everyone from Michelle Obama to Vanessa Hudgens, to Kourtney Kardashian. ASOS is seriously the one-stop-shop for just about everything. The tops, the dresses, hell -- even their maternity wear is off the hook. While they do carry some high-end brands, you’d be shocked at how much cuteness you can find for under thirty bucks. #WINNING
If it’s good enough for Beyoncé and Rihanna, it’s good enough for you! The British retailer is having a huge sale right now, and there’s a good chance that you can get yourself something fabulous, and still pay your cell phone bill. They’re a little pricier than ASOS, and cater to a slightly more sophisticated fashionista, but Topshop still offers a variety of styles for a good price. They’ve also got a pretty awesome beauty department to get you the total look.
This vintage-inspired online retailer has so much adorable stuff, it’s almost overwhelming. A favorite of bloggers, Taylor Swift, and fashionistas alike, ModCloth is a must-visit site if you’re into super-cute contemporary dresses with a 60s flare. They also have a brilliant system for customer reviews, where folks who recently purchased the item can upload photos of themselves wearing it. This is awesome because—let’s face it—it never quite looks the same as it does on the model, right?

The confirmation of Nina Dobrev and Derek Hough as a couple is cute for all of five seconds... then the awkwardness of the situation sets in. Dobrev's career, friendships, and future romances are all in jeoprady, and we're counting down the ways that this one relationship could pose a problem for the Vampire Diaries star...
Career: Dobrev spent the last three years dating her Vampire Diaries co-star Ian Somerhalder. This union was beloved by fans who begged for a real life Damon-Elena romance. Unfortunately, their characters never hooked up in the show while the couple was together. Instead, The Vampire Diaries will have Dobrev and Somerhalder get together in the upcoming season. We expect filming will be a completely comfortable affair, except if Hough ever decides to visit the set....
Romantic Relationship: Dobrev fans loved her relationship with Somerhalder, and while it seems the two continue to be friends, the actress' public comments about both Hough and Somerhalder may cause tension in her new relationship, and stir up unflattering gossip. Dobrev recently instagrammed pictures of both men, one of Hough, congratulating him on his Emmy win, then another of Somerhalder, congratulationg him on his Visionaries Award (below). Dobrev seems to be paying both men equal public attention, and this may spell trouble for the Hough/Dobrev relationship.

"@Derekhough !!!!!!!! #EMMYWINNER I cant express in 140 characters how unbelievably excited+incredibly proud I am of you. You deserve this :)"
"@iansomerhalder VISIONARIES Award?!? Thats amazing+in such good company. Frieda Pinto,President of Mexico Etc."
Public Image: Dobrev was the September covergirl of Cosmopolitan magazine. In her interview, which she most likely gave in July, Dobrev stated, "I've been a relationship girl, and I've been in long-term relationships my whole life until this point, so I think I'm looking forward to spending some time with myself and finding myself again… I'm just discovering different sides of me and growing and then I'll figure out what I like in a man when I see it." However, reports are claiming that Dobrev and Hough began dating in August, just a few weeks after she gave the interview, and just two months after she broke up with Somerhalder. Not exactly a role model for learning to live on your own.
Friendship: It has been widely understood that Dobrev and Julianne Hough, Derek's sister, are the best of friends. In fact, Julianne introduced Dobrev and Derek. But, if this relationship doesn't work out, it is very likely that Dobrev will lose both her boyfriend and her best friend, a fate that no girl wants to go through.
Good luck Nina, you're going to need it.

Actress Nina Dobrev has moved on from her failed romance with Ian Somerhalder by reportedly dating professional dancer Derek Hough. The TV beauty was left heartbroken when her three-year relationship with her The Vampire Diaries co-star Somerhalder ended in May (13), but she appears to have bounced back with her best pal Julianne Hough's brother, Derek, according to multiple reports.
The new couple struck up a romance in August (13) and the stars are smitten with each other, according to Us Weekly magazine.
A source tells the publication the Dancing With the Stars choreographer, who won his first Emmy Award on Sunday (22Sep13), asked for a pair of shoes as a gift "for his girlfriend" at the Kari Feinstein Emmys Style Lounge last week (19Sep13), and then "texted Nina for her size".
Dobrev further fuelled the new romance rumours by sharing a photo of Hough following his Emmy on Twitter.com, alongside the caption, "@Derekhough !!!!!!!! EMMYWINNER I cant (sic) express in 140 characters how unbelievably excited+incredibly proud I am of you. You deserve this."
In another photo caption, she gushed, "@derekhough Those of us touched by your light got to watch you brighten up the rest of the world. Keep shining!"
Replying to the public compliments, Hough responded, "Your (sic) the best babe."
Stars including Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Matthew Mcconaughey, Chloe Grace Moretz, Ben Stiller and the Jonas Brothers have joined millions across the world in marking the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in America. Nearly 3,000 people were killed on 11 September, 2001, after two hijacked planes were flown into the World Trade Center in New York City, while a third plane ripped into the Pentagon military defence headquarters in Virginia and another went down in Pennsylvania.
A ceremony was held in New York City on Wednesday morning (11Sep13) to mark 12 years since the atrocities, and a number of celebrities marked the anniversary in posts on Twitter.com.
Pop star Lady Gaga, who was brought up in the Big Apple, writes, "12 years ago today Sept 11th. We will never forget. Still remember the smoke in the sky. Saying lots of prayers for families who lost lives."
The Jonas Brothers wrote, "Never forget. 9/11" while Kings of Leon rocker Nathan Followill adds, "Remembering those who were taken too soon on this date 12 years ago. Sad day for all but stronger than ever. Never Forget."
British musicians Duran Duran posted, "Our thoughts are with every one who was affected by the tragedies of 9/11. We hope that all reading have a day filled w/ (with) peace," and music mogul Simon Cowell reached out to the victims' relatives: "My thoughts are with the families who lost someone special. They will never be forgotten."
Singer/actress Miley Cyrus threw her support behind a campaign which urges members of the public to do a good deed to mark the sad occasion, writing, "Do a good deed today in observance of 911 Day. Make your pledge at 911day.org."
Missy Elliott marked the day by recalling her time in New York City on the day of the attacks, writing, "I remember 9/11 like it was yesterday. I was in NY just did (a) Michael Jackson tribute the night before... Me and Nelly Furtado performed. She made her plane but I got stuck in NY for days during 9/11 they closed everything... Many Prayers for the families grieving over the loss of a loved one during the 9/11 tragedy. May they rest in peace. Never 4gotten (sic)."
Actor/director Ben Stiller adds, "Glad to be in NY on 9/11. Remembering all those who lost someone."
Other messages came in from Josh Groban, Spike Lee, Mena Suvari, Sheryl Crow , Bobby Brown, Julianne Hough and Chely Wright, while actors Matthew McConaughey and Chloe Grace Moretz both posted photo tributes.
A number of other stars are raising money for good causes on Wednesday by manning the phones on trading floors in both London and New York as part of the annual Cantor Fitzgerald and BGC Partners' Charity Day.
Singer Katy Perry celebrated America's Labor Day in style on Monday (02Sep13) by throwing a star-studded house party in Hollywood. The California Gurls hitmaker invited Juno star Ellen Page, actor Jesse Metcalfe and his girlfriend Cara Santana, Footloose's Julianne Hough and Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. James to her home for the event.
Reality TV star Khloe Kardashian also put aside speculation of problems in her marriage to NBA player Lamar Odom to attend Perry's party, where guests sipped on beers and played ping-pong.
With her perfect Barbie-doll looks and dazzling dance-floor moves, Hough became America's spinning sweetheart when she joined — and ultimately won — Dancing With the Stars. An aspiring entertainer from an early age, 10-year-old Hough left her Utah home to study at London's Italia Conti Academy of Performing Arts; her efforts paid off when she became the first U.S.-born dancer to be crowned International Latin Youth Champion and Junior Blackpool World Latin Champion. Although she returned to Utah to finish high school, after graduation she headed to Los Angeles and quickly booked a gig as a sexy dancer on the short-lived game show Show Me the Money. From there she joined the DWTS tour as a company dancer. In a 42nd Street-like twist, when lead dancer Kym Johnson injured herself, Hough replaced her, twirling across the country with Season 1 DWTS contestant Joey MacIntyre. Her impressive work led to her addition to DWTS proper. She was paired with Olympic speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno in Season 4 and race-car driver Helio Castraneves in Season 5, winning back-to-back mirror-ball trophies. Proving that she's more than just a hoofer, Hough released her first country-music album in May 2008, with plans to open for country star Brad Paisley during his summer tour.
