After playing an escort in raunchy series Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Piper is now starring as a married teacher who falls for a 16-year-old pupil, played by Skins star Kaya Scodelario, in U.K. drama True Love.
Audiences will see the pair share passionate kisses and even climb in bed together when it debuts in Britain on Sunday (17Jun12) - and network bosses at the BBC are already predicting a backlash.
A source tells Britain's Daily Mirror, "This storyline will get some criticism but it's been well researched and is similar to real-life events."
With the Hunger Games promotional blitz currently in full swing – which makes sense, since it’s now in theaters! – and cast members’ faces and voices pretty much everywhere, it’s weird, borderline uncomfortable, to think of any actress not named Jennifer Lawrence playing the lead character, Katniss Everdeen. But the truth is, it could’ve happened pretty easily: Not only did Lawrence recently admit that she didn’t see herself playing Katniss, but around this time last year, lest we forget, Lawrence was merely one of 10 young up-and-comers in the running for the coveted role, and Lionsgate confirmed that there was no clear frontrunner. Let’s take a look at the other nine girls.
In March of last year, Steinfeld – coming off her breakout (and Oscar-nominated) performance in True Grit – was almost as red-hot as Lawrence. She’s fared OK herself, though, having landed roles in a new take on Romeo and Juliet and the highly anticipated adaptation of Ender’s Game, et al.
The onetime Little Miss Sunshine of Little Miss Sunshine is all grown up (er, almost 16) and ready for mature roles – just, evidently, not quite right for Katniss. Like Steinfeld, she’ll star in the buzzy Ender’s Game (and much more) as a consolation prize.
The precocious Moretz has proven that she can act (and curse, as seen in Kick-Ass!) well beyond her years, but she couldn’t quite nail down the lead role in Hunger Games. Which is OK: She’ll appear in no less than six major films over the next two years, including this summer’s Dark Shadows.
Like the aforementioned Moretz, Fonseca broke out in Kick-Ass (you also may know her as “The Daughter” from How I Met Your Mother!). Unlike Moretz, though, she doesn’t quite have a booming career to fall back on. At least not yet.
Also known as Julia Roberts’ niece, Emma Roberts might’ve actually been too famous (and thus too expensive?) at the time of casting for Hunger Games producers, who were ostensibly looking for actresses with slightly fresher faces to frontline a brand-new franchise. Nonetheless, Roberts was very much in the running.
Casting the Irish Ronan to play the American heroine Katniss might not have been well received by hardcore fans of the Suzanne Collins book trilogy – and it’s not out of the realm of possibility that that factored into the decision-making process for Lionsgate.
The same can be said for Scodelario, who is British, that was said for Ronan. But Ronan was at least Oscar-nominated for 2007’s Atonement and has starred in a few big movies since; not the case with Scodelario, to whom American audiences have had almost no exposure, and vice versa. However, those fans familiar with Scodelario seemed more in favor of her – around the Web – in March 2011 than any other actress on the list.
Ditto the Australian Browning! Plus, even though the failure of 2011’s Sucker Punch was certainly not Browning’s fault, it might’ve left a bad taste in producers’ mouths – or they might’ve been worried that it left a bad taste in moviegoers’ mouths.
Woodley might, in hindsight, have been the perfect choice, the one that got away. Producers could’ve locked her in long-term for considerably less than what she is presumably commanding today, following her Oscar-nominated, range-displaying performance in the celebrated dramedy The Descendants. The movie world is now Woodley’s oyster, and it obviously won’t ever include The Hunger Games.
Imagine Lars and the Real Girl, only darker...somehow. That's what we're getting in Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes, which has just cast Jessica Biel as one of its starring players. Biel joins young Kaya Scodelario (Skins, Moon, Clash of the Titans) in the twisted, psychologically strangling new feature from writer/director Francesca Gregorini (Tanner Hall).
The film follows the titular Emanuel, a seventeen year-old girl with a hefty some of emotional problems, who develops a fascination with her neighbor Linda, due to Linda's striking resemblance to Emanuel's deceased mother. But wait: it gets darker. Linda hires Emanuel to babysit her young daughter, who turns out actually to be a doll. See, Linda's got her own assortment of troubles, and is dealing with the death of her own young daughter by pretending that she is still alive—basically, don't see this if you're already feeling particularly fragile.
Scodelario is playing Emanuel, and Biel is now being cast as Linda. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara was formerly attached to the project as Emanuel, but opted out due to feeling that she was too old to play the part. Mara should get a few Classy Points for this—although it's a disappointment to hear about her leaving any project, the actually seventeen year-old Scodelario is a promising player as well. And as for Biel? Well, that's just the icing on the cake. The chilling, emotionally demented cake.
The 20 year old, who is famous in the U.K. for his role in hit series Shameless, is said to have driven his BMW into Oliver Flint, 18, who approached the vehicle in Kentish Town, north London in the early hours of Sunday morning (15Aug10).
Tittensor allegedly ran the boy over, before speeding off. He later handed himself into police and was arrested. He was released on bail until mid-September (10) pending a police investigation.
The mum of Flint, who has lost his sight in one eye and remains in hospital, has asked Britain's The Sun to publish snaps of the teen showing his badly bruised face, and claims the incident occurred when he asked to use Tittensor's actress girlfriend Kaya Scodelario's mobile phone after losing contact with his relatives on his brother's birthday night out.
Lulu Flint tells the publication, "The eye specialist has said he has lost the sight of his left eye and the vision in his right is very blurred and getting worse because of nerve damage. How can anyone do such a thing? It was inhuman.
"Oliver had had a few drinks but certainly wasn't drunk. He asked Kaya if he could borrow her phone but she ignored him. He then went and asked the young man who was sitting in the car.
"We think the car was going at about 40mph when it braked really hard and Oliver flew into the road and hit his head on the kerb... For a few hours we honestly believed he was going to die. Then when he came round I had to break the news to him about his eyes.
"He is struggling to come to terms with it and keeps asking me, 'Will I be able to see again Mum?' We are just praying that his remaining eye improves."
The 20 year old, who is famous in the U.K. for his role in hit series Shameless, is alleged to have driven his BMW into a young man who approached the vehicle in Kentish Town, north London in the early hours of Sunday morning (15Aug10).
The unnamed teenager suffered head injuries in the collision and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is said to be in a stable condition.
The actor, who was in the car with his girlfriend, Skins star Kaya Scodelario, gave himself up to police shortly after the incident and is said to have passed a breath test. He was arrested, but no charges were brought.
A police spokesman says, "Police were called at 2.02am on Sunday 15 August to Kentish Town Road, NW5 to reports of a collision involving a BMW Z4 and a pedestrian.
"An 18-year-old man was taken by London Ambulance Service to hospital suffering from head injuries... The male driver did not stop at the scene. He later handed himself into officers at a central London police station at approximately 3.30am and was arrested in connection with the collision."
Tittensor has been bailed until mid-September (10) pending a police investigation.
The Clash of the Titans star checked into doctors' care in the U.K. after falling ill and she's taken to her page on Twitter.com page to tell fans about her condition - admitting she's terribly bored while recovering.
In a series of posts on the social networking site, Scodelario writes, "Been stuck in hospital for two days with a kidney infection. Feel s**t. And on top of that they have put me on the crazy old people ward.
"Sooooooooooo (sic) bored. Nothing to do in hospitals. Old people don't have much banter."
