Born Jan. 17, 1964 in Chicago, IL, Michelle LaVaughn Robinson grew up a highly intelligent, community-minded young woman, who excelled in school and went on to graduate from Princeton and Harvard Law School. She met Barack Obama when he joined her law firm, Sidley Austin, as one of her mentees, and the two fell in love and married in 1992. The couple soon welcomed two daughters, Malia and Sasha, with Obama playing a key role in keeping the family strong and centered as her husband embarked on a political career. With her own dazzling career, Obama held a variety of high-ranking legal and community affairs positions, but she eventually cut back on these responsibilities as her husband declared his presidential candidacy.
Although she publicly stated her dislike of politics and occasionally chafed at its demands, Obama and her public image underwent a transformation during the campaign, softening the focus on her to highlight her role as a potential "mom-in-chief." Her historic ascension alongside her husband into the White House delighted many, who saw Obama's muscular arms, self-confidence and strength as elements of a new, more feminist approach to the role of First Lady. Focusing on platforms that included supporting military families and her "Let's Move!" battle against childhood obesity, the effortlessly glamorous Obama arguably became the modern era's most popular and influential First Lady, and she charmed with multiple public appearances that included everything from dancing on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" (NBC, 2009- ) to announcing the Best Picture winner at the 2013 Academy Awards.
