Spanish musician Joan Manuel Serrat is to be honoured for his career achievements by the organisers of the Latin Grammy Awards. The singer/songwriter has been named the 2014 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year and will be feted at a gala event in Las Vegas in November (14).
Latin Recording Academy President Gabriel Abaroa, Jr. says, "Joan Manuel Serrat's lyrical style and magnificent talent make him a treasured and timeless musical figure... It is a privilege to recognise a man with such an illustrious and socially conscious career, and we look forward to celebrating his creativity and legacy."
Serrat follows in the footsteps of previous recipients including Gloria Estefan, Carlos Santana, and Shakira, who also praises the 2014 winner in a statement which reads, "Joan Manuel has become a true symbol for freedom, coherence, quality, and perfect use of our language, and a reference that we all have in reaching our goals."
The tribute event will take place on 19 November (14) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
