"Around here, darkness lives on both sides of the law."
The new moody cop series True Detective will start this January according to HBO. The Bayou-based drama features Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Louisiana detectives attempting to catch a serial killer. If you haven’t already seen the wonderfully atmospheric teaser trailer released in June, do yourself a favor and watch it now.
While the clip is short, it's filled with great scenes of muddy wetlands, delapidated buildings, and creepy messages. It’s simply drenched with tension and certainly makes Louisiana seem like a great setting for a dreary murder mystery. A full-length trailer for the series will premiere right before the season 4 premiere of Boardwalk Empire this Sunday. While there's no firm date in January for the premiere as of yet, winter can't come fast enough.
True Detectives continues the recent trend of television studios attracting big name talent to the small screen. Television is quickly becoming a prime destination for stars who are serious about making quality work, and flexing acting muscles they haven't had to use in a while. Matthew McConaughey, especially, is having a bit of a career renniscense as of late, appearing in critically acclaimed films such as, the small-town murder drama Bernie, the indie Mud, the black comedy Killer Joe, and the stripper drama Magic Mike. Let's hope True Detective is more in line with those films than it is with something like Fool's Gold.

John Mellencamp's two teenage sons have been charged with felony battery amid allegations they beat up another man in Bloomington, Indiana. The legendary rocker's boys, Speck and Hud, reportedly became embroiled in an altercation with a 19 year old outside his home on 29 July (13).
Police claim the pair, alongside pal Ty Smith, kicked and punched the male until the victim's roommates heard the attack and ran to help.
Cops were called to the scene, but according to the official incident report, no arrests were made at the time as no one present wanted to pursue criminal charges.
The Mellencamp boys reportedly told officers they had lashed out in relation to an incident that took place at a party earlier in the night, when 18-year-old Speck had been hit in the face.
Their alleged victim was hospitalised with fractures to his face and required stitches for cuts.
Charges against the Mellencamps were filed on Thursday (15Aug13) and Speck and 19-year-old Hud, a trained boxer, are now both facing a count of battery resulting in serious bodily injury. Smith, the son of Indiana University baseball coach Tracy Smith, has also been charged with felony battery for his part in the alleged fight.
News of the altercation comes just weeks after John Mellencamp appeared on late night TV in America sporting a black eye.
During the June (13) interview with David Letterman, he explained, "My son and I had words and he got a punch in and I didn't. (He's) 18. He's 6'2 and weighs almost 200 pounds..."
Speck and Hud are the singer's two children with his third ex-wife, former supermodel Elaine Irwin Mellencamp.
Former 3Rd Rock From The Sun star French Stewart has become a first-time father after his wife gave birth to a little girl. The actor and his partner Vanessa Smith welcomed a daughter named Helene Claire in Los Angeles on 29 June (13).
The new parents only confirmed the news of her birth this week (beg05Aug13) as the baby was born six weeks prematurely.
Stewart tells People.com, "She was born six weeks early and could be held in the palm of your hand. We named her after my lovely mother. My sister is also a Helene. There are five wonderful Claires in Vanessa's family so the tradition of it is very special for us."
The actor, who is currently working on a new TV show called Mom, married Smith, his second wife, in 2011.
The private elementary school Will Smith launched in California in 2008 has shut down. The Men in Black star founded the New Village Leadership Academy in Calabasas with his actress wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, to school young children using the Study Tech curriculum method of teaching, which was devised by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.
The school caused a stir when it opened after campaigners claimed it was being used as a front for the teachings of the controversial Scientology organisation. The Smiths, whose two children Jaden and Willow used to attend the school, denied they were followers and insisted the academy had no religious affiliation.
However, it appears the celebrity ties were not enough to keep the school in business and the venue closed its doors for good on 28 June (13).
A source tells America's Star magazine, "Will and Jada put millions into it. But there's a lot more to a school than money - if people don't agree with the teaching material, then all the money in the world won't save it."
No official reason has been given for the academy's closure and the Hollywood couple has yet to comment on the story.
Doctor Who star Matt Smith celebrated the TV show's 50th anniversary in style by hosting a special BBC Proms concert in London on Saturday (13Jul13). Smith, the most recent Time Lord, was joined by his co-star Jenna Coleman, who plays his sidekick Clara, at the Royal Albert Hall to mark five decades of the hit sci-fi drama.
He told the audience, "One of the great joys of playing this extraordinary, legendary Time Lord is the support and knowledge and love and brilliance of the fans - you really make the show what it is."
The duo introduced conductor Ben Foster, who led the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the London Philharmonic Choir through a series of Doctor Who classic tracks as legendary villains - including Daleks, Whispermen and a Weeping Angel - terrified the audience.
Actor Peter Davison, the fifth Doctor, and Carole Ann Ford, who played the first companion Susan in 1963, also appeared at the event to introduce some of the musical segments.
The concert was the first of two special Doctor Who Proms - the second took place on Sunday (14Jul13) - which will be broadcast as part of the show's 50th anniversary celebrations in November (13).
Smith announced his decision to bow out as the 11th Doctor Who in June (13) and will leave the programme at the end of the year (13).
Every week, Hollywood gives us something to whine about, and the week of July 8 was no different. We could make a drinking game out of this week, but that would be too dangerous. Instead, we'll stick to the usual formula: varying levels of alcoholic respite depending on how bothersome the week's issues are. Is your biggest complaint this week a flimsy one? How about a light cocktail to take the edge off? Got a real bone to pick with a celeb or entertainment entity this week? Go ahead, grab a drink that'll put hair on your chest. Here are the week's entertainment stories that are forcing us to seek a bubbly or boozy refuge. And maybe an idea or two about how you should wash them down.

Willow Smith releases a music video for her single "Summer Fling." We aren't sure which is more concerning: the 12-year-old's much older male love interest or the cringe-worthy combination of her new name (Melodic Chaotic) and fake British accent.
Justin Bieber pees into a mop bucket, then squirts a spray bottle of liquid at a photo of President Bill Clinton, shouting, "F*ck Bill Clinton!". The commander-in-chief accepted his apology, most likely because the Biebs squirted a bottle rather than choosing to "swag, swag, swag" on him.

James Bond star Pierce Brosnan tried everything in his power to help his cancer-stricken daughter in the last years of her life, according to a close family friend. Charlotte Brosnan passed away on 28 June (13) after a battle with ovarian cancer, the same disease that killed her mother Cassandra Harris, the Irish actor's first wife, 22 years earlier.
According to Lisa Paulsen, president of the Entertainment Industry Foundation and Brosnan's longtime pal, the Hollywood star had hoped Charlotte would beat the cancer and pushed to get her into the latest clinical trials.
Paulsen tells People.com, "Pierce was willing to pick up the phone and call anyone, go anywhere, take her anywhere, do anything for her at anytime. He was desperate. After Cassie passed away, Pierce became a fierce champion and ambassador to all things related to women's cancer research."
Paulsen has consoled her friend by assuring him his efforts haven't been in vain: "I told Pierce, 'Despite the fact that Charlotte didn't end up benefiting from long-term new ovarian cancer therapies, so many things that you have done have led to so many discoveries'. He's a remarkable and loving father, and Charlotte was such a trooper."
Brosnan, who married second wife Keely Shaye Smith in 2001, paid tribute to his daughter shortly after her death, praising Charlotte for fighting the disease with "grace and humanity, courage and dignity".
She was Harris' daughter from a previous marriage, but Brosnan adopted her and her brother Christopher as his own after their father's death in 1986.
Pierce Brosnan's late daughter married her longtime partner just weeks before she lost her battle with ovarian cancer. Charlotte Brosnan passed away aged 42 on Friday (28Jun13) from the same disease which killed her mother Cassandra Harris, the Bond star's first wife, 22 years earlier.
She decided to make her relationship with artist Alex Smith official before she died, and the pair exchanged vows in front of their families in London on 14 June (13).
Charlotte was Harris' daughter from a previous marriage, but Brosnan adopted her and her brother Christopher as his own after their father's death in 1986.

In a statement to People, Brosnan shared, "On June 28 at 2 p.m. my darling daughter Charlotte Emily passed on to eternal life having succumbed to ovarian cancer."
Brosnan then goes on to disclose that she was surrounded by her loved ones such as her husband Alex Smith, her children Isabella and Lucas, and her brothers Christopher and Sean during her final days.

We pray for her and that the cure for this wretched disease will be at hand soon," Brosnan said. The former James Bond then went on to give thanks for everyone's "heartfelt gratitude."
