French actress Marion Cotillard was left disgusted by the U.K.'s phone-hacking scandal. British tabloid the News of the World was shut down by owner Rupert Murdoch in 2011 amid uproar at revelations that some journalists had illegally accessed the voicemail messages of hundreds of celebrities, including Sir Paul McCartney, Hugh Grant, and Jude Law, as well as members of the public.
The Dark Knight Rises star Cotillard was horrified by the intrusion into privacy and insists lawmakers in the U.K. should follow her native country's example of tough media control.
She tells The Observer Magazine, "Having your picture taken in the street and put in a magazine won't change your life. But what happened to people in England, hacking phones. It's vomit. It's sick. This f**king changes your life... If someone is cheating on their wife in the street and pictures are taken, fine, that's their risk."
British Prime Minister David Cameron's former press adviser Andy Coulson was jailed for 18 months in July (14) for overseeing a culture of phone-hacking while he was editor of the News of the World. Several other journalists who worked under him on the paper were also jailed.

Which is exactly why the producers of My Man Is a Loser chose him to play the ultimate playboy-turned-marriage counselor. The film centers around Marty and Paul (Michael Rapaport and Bryan Callen, respectively), two family men who turn to Stamos' character, Mike, for guidance after their marriages start to fall apart. However, their plan to sweep their wives off their feet backfires, as Marty and Paul 2.0 might actually be worse than the original model. Turns out Mike still has a few lessons of his own to learn, and bartender Clarissa (Tika Sumpter) might be just the person to teach him.
In this exclusive clip from the film, Mike guides his buddies through the three Ls of communication - look, listen, and learn - by having them uphold a conversation with three strangers. Apparently it's his talent for paying attention, along with his jet black hair and winning smile, that helps Mike win over all the ladies. Although, if we're being honest, his tenure with Jesse and the Rippers probably helps.
My Man is a Loser will be released in theaters and on VOD on July 25.
Sir Paul McCartney has hit the studio with Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp and Aerosmith star Joe Perry to work on a top secret new project.
The Beatles legend recently headed to the U.S. to restart his postponed tour after a bout of ill health which landed him in hospital in Japan. It has now emerged McCartney has been taking part in secret studio sessions with a trio of famous stars inbetween his tour dates.
Perry reveals the group recorded together but he refuses to give any more detail about the top secret project, telling the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper, "It's the great ego leveler. I was in the studio with Alice Cooper and Johnny Depp, playing guitar, and the three of us are looking at each other like, hey, we're sitting here with Paul McCartney! And we're all looking at each other like open-mouthed kids."
"Paul was really nice. He's all about business (when he's recording). At 72 he can still hit all those notes... It's a project that we're keeping under wraps for now. There will be (an announcement when the time is right)."
He adds of working with McCartney, "I met him once or twice (over the years) to say hello. To spend six or eight hours in (a) studio with him recording! He makes you feel like (you're recording with just another guy). He just happens to be a motherf**king huge talent!"
The news comes just days after Hollywood actor Depp joined Perry's band Aerosmith on stage at their gig in Massachusetts to play guitar.
Rock icon Billy Joel is set to be honoured with America's prestigious Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
The Piano Man star has been selected as the 2014 recipient of the Library of Congress award, which is named after iconic composer George Gershwin and celebrates the lifetime achievements of a living musical artist.
Librarian of Congress James H. Billington says, "Billy Joel is a storyteller of the highest order. There is an intimacy to his songwriting that bridges the gap between the listener and the worlds he shares through music. When you listen to a Billy Joel song, you know about the people and the place and what happened there. And while there may be pain, despair and loss, there is ultimately a resilience to it that makes you want to go to these places again and again."
"Importantly, as with any good storyteller, the recognition experienced in a Billy Joel song is not simply because these are songs we have heard so many times, but because we see something of ourselves in them."
A flattered Joel adds, "The great composer, George Gershwin, has been a personal inspiration to me throughout my career and the Library's decision to include me among those songwriters who have been past recipients is a milestone for me."
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member will be presented with the accolade at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. in November (14).
Previous recipients include Paul Simon, Sir Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Carole King, who made history last year (13) as the first woman to ever claim the Gershwin Prize.
Actor Ben Whishaw has replaced Colin Firth as the voice in the upcoming film version of kids' TV show Paddington. Oscar winner Firth announced he was quitting the project last month (Jun14), and now producers have chosen Skyfall star Whishaw to take his place as the voice to the beloved bear.
Director Paul King tells the U.K.'s Daily Mail that Whishaw is the perfect replacement for Firth, saying, "He breathes and he speaks and he sounds like Paddington, rather than the most beautiful chocolate-voiced man (Firth) on the planet
Paddington, which also stars Nicole Kidman, Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters and Peter Capaldi, is scheduled to hit U.K. cinemas in November (14) and arrive in the U.S. on Christmas Day (25Dec14).
Martin Freeman's stage turn as Richard Iii has divided critics, with reviewers branding the actor's performance "highly intelligent" but "disappointingly underpowered". The Hobbit star takes on the role of William Shakespeare's villainous king in a new production at London's Trafalgar Studios theatre which opened on Wednesday night (09Jul14).
The production had previously been hit with reports suggesting overzealous Freeman fans had been creating a distraction by whooping and cheering throughout the show, but critics reported the audience on press night was well behaved.
However, many theatre reviewers were underwhelmed by the show, with Charles Spencer of Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper calling the production "unnecessarily complicated" and insisting Freeman's turn in the title role was "disappointingly underpowered", adding, "There were moments when your reviewer was tempted to stand up and boo."
The Guardian's Michael Billington calls Freeman's performance "highly accomplished" but insists the staging of the play "doesn't make total sense", while The Independent's Paul Taylor adds, "Freeman gives a highly intelligent, calculatedly understated performance... (but) Freeman doesn't radiate a sufficiently dangerous sense of unpredictability."
However, Ben Dowell of the Radio Times was full of praise for The Office star, writing, "Freeman does not disappoint... (His) talent lies in creating something frighteningly ordinary about his villainy."
Freeman follows in the footsteps of stars including Laurence Olivier, Sir Alec Guinness, Sir Kenneth Branagh and Sir Ian McKellen, who have all played the murderous king on the stage.
No two elements in Hollywood make more sense together than Ridley Scott and epic, sprawling period dramas. After all, who better to direct an action packed, intensely dramatic, incredibly serious film about Moses leading the Jews out of slavery in Egypt than the man who made Gladiator and Black Hawk Down? Unfortunately, that's about the only thing that seems to make any sense about his latest film, Exodus: Gods and Kings, a movie that promises to live up to its poster. The first trailer for the epic sees Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton (who are Welsh and Australian, respectively) face off over the people of Egypt.
At least, that's what we think is going on. To be honest, we were a bit distracted by the sheer insanity of the trailer to really follow along with the plot. No matter how hard we tried to pay attention to the exposition that the dramatic voice-over was revealing or focus on the intensity of the torch-lit glares, there would be something else that drew our attention and made us stop everything we were doing in order to exclaim "Wait, what?!" In a desperate attempt to make sense of everything that's going on in Exodus: Gods and Kings, we've rounded up all of the most surprising, confusing and downright insane moments in the trailer.
0:13 – Christian Bale’s Impeccably Trimmed Facial Hair Was ancient Egypt particularly well known for its barbers? Because the angles on that goatee are distractingly perfect. Surely Moses has more important things to deal with than making sure that is facial hair looks pristine at all times... like, say, freeing the slaves? Bale doesn't even show up to the Oscars this well groomed.
0: 19 – Joel Edgerton’s Painted-On Eyebrows Was the makeup team worried that audiences wouldn’t be able to find Edgerton’s eyes after he shaved his head? Did they really think we needed two clear arrows pointing at them at all times, so that we can better appreciate the intensity of his gaze? Did they confuse old hieroglyphs for an accurate representation of what people’s eyebrows looked like then, and attempt to match his makeup to a cave wall?
0:24 – What Accent Is That Supposed to Be? It’s clearly an attempt at the standard “British gravitas” that is a fundamental requirement of any epic period piece, but then towards the end of the line, it takes a strange detour into what we can only assume is an attempt at Egyptian, but which really sounds more like someone from a vaguely European country speaking with his mouth full.
0:27 – Hang on, Was There an Epic Battle in the Original Story?There was definitely fire, we know that, but as far as we remembered it came from a burning bush. Was there this much swordplay in the Bible? Did Ridley Scott just grow up reading a different version of the story or was this all in there, just buried between the lines? Maybe we’ve all been wrong this whole time…

0:31 – Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton Are in Two Completely Different Movies Edgerton clearly thinks he’s starring in a shot-for-shot remake of a classic Hollywood epic, complete with period-accurate – well, for the 1950s and ‘60s, at least – makeup and the kind of voice that proclaims, “I am a Serious Actor. Respect Me.” Whereas Bale is clearly playing off-duty Bruce Wayne, who has been hanging out in his desert mansion for a while in order to build up his base tan.
0:41 – Is Someone Casting a Spell on that Baby? Why else would you wave your hands over its head? What did this baby do to warrant a curse like that? It didn’t harm anyone, it’s just a baby. What movie do you think this is, Maleficent? Also, why would you wake up a sleeping baby? It probably just got to sleep and now it’s going to be up all night, which means someone’s going to be exhausted when they show up for battle tomorrow. Nobody wants sleepy soldiers.
1:06 – Wait, Sigourney Weaver Is in This? Wow, they didn’t even try to cast anyone who looks like they could actually be from this region, did they? Also, is she playing someone’s mother? Because Sigourney Weaver is far too young to play either Christian Bale or Joel Edgerton’s mother, and yet here she is, looking authoritative and resplendent, like she’s going to yell at Moses and Ramses to stop fighting and clean up their wing of the palace, without even smudging her perfect eyeliner.
1:14 – Moses’ Casual Reveal of the Plagues About to Terrorize Egypt“Oh, hey Ramses. Don’t freak out or anything, but there’s something really terrifying headed your way, and I’m not gonna stop it or anything, but you’re basically screwed. No worries, though. I’m sure it will all work out fine. Well, it was good talking to you, hope the hail doesn’t knock you out. See you at the family reunion!”
1:22 – Christian Bale’s “Serious Archer” Face If you’re leading an army into battle against their greatest foe, the king who has held them captive for generations, you might want to find a facial expression that’s a bit more intimidating and inspiring than just opening your mouth as wide as you can and refusing to blink. You were Batman. You should have a perfect fighting face ready for any occasion.
1:30 – The Plainest Title Cards of All Time After a minute and a half of sweeping panoramas, epic battle scenes, stunning visual effects and a literal river of blood, the trailer fades out into the titles… which are just thin silver letters on a black background. Did they run out of money for titles thanks to the massive effects budget? If you’re going to wimp out on the titles, at least try and pick an interesting font. It’s advertising 101.
And we didn't even touch on the fact that Aaron Paul is playing Moses' second in command. Exodus: Gods and Kings opens in theaters on December 12.
Grammy-winning jazz artist Paul Horn has died at the age of 84. The flautist passed away in Vancouver, Canada on Sunday (29Jun14) following a brief illness.
His son Marlen says, "He passed away very peacefully and did not suffer. He wasn't in any pain."
During his five-decade career, Horn played on more than 50 albums and picked up five Grammy nominations, winning two trophies in 1966 for his Jazz Suite on the Mass Texts album.
Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, and Tony Bennett were among the many artists he performed with.
Rock wildman Shane Macgowan once sold Paul Weller a tramp's old T-shirt for $850 (£500). The Pogues frontman was a familiar face on the U.K. punk scene in the 1970s before finding fame, and he was the proud owner of an authentic, vintage Union Jack printed top.
He knew clothes-obsessed The Jam frontman Weller would want the garment as soon as he saw it, so he wore it to several concerts - and Weller eventually paid him a huge sum for it.
MacGowan tells Uncut magazine, "Mine was a real Carnaby Street '67 job. I wore it to all The Jam gigs, 'cos I knew Paul Weller would crack sooner or later and give me a ridiculous amount of money for it. He offered me a Rickenbacker (guitar). I said, 'No, I couldn't part with it.'
"I'd got it from this old tramp. I was trying to get the most I could, and eventually he offered me £500. I said, 'You're done!' Half a grand for a f**king mod shirt!"

Oscar winner Colin Firth has quit the film version of kids' TV show Paddington.
Weeks after the first trailer for the film was released, Firth, who was to voice the project's namesake bear, has announced he will no longer be a part of the film. Poking fun at Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's recent split announcement, the Brit tells EW.com, "After a period of denial, we've chosen 'conscious uncoupling'."
He adds, "It's been bittersweet to see this delightful creature take shape and come to the sad realisation that he simply doesn't have my voice. I've had the joy of seeing most of the film and it's going to be quite wonderful. I still feel rather protective of this bear and I'm pestering them all with suggestions for finding a voice worthy of him."
The setback will not impact on the movie's release date - it is still scheduled to hit U.K. cinemas in November (14) and it will hit the big screen in the U.S. on Christmas Day (25Dec14).
Director Paul King, who is confident he'll be able to announce Firth's replacement in the coming weeks, says, "I cannot thank him (Firth) enough for his contribution to Paddington. We love the voice and we love the bear, but as our young bear came into being we agreed that the two didn't seem to fit. So, with somewhat heavy hearts, we decided to part ways."
