Family shows such as Modern Family and Parenthood are hard to resist, because they're so easy to relate to. They remind us about all the good and bad times that we've gone through with our own family. Often, the remind us to appreciate our loved ones and all that they do for us.

Country singers Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson's former manager Neil Reshen has died at the age of 75. Reshen passed away of complications from Alzheimer's disease on 6 December (14) in the Bronx, New York, according to the New York Times.
He began working with Jennings in the 1970s and helped him secure a more beneficial financial packet and artistic freedom while at RCA Records.
After teaming with Jennings, Reshen began managing Nelson and went on to work with Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, the Velvet Underground and Peter Max.
However, in the late 1970s, Jennings and Nelson fired Reshen after he reportedly sent a package containing cocaine to Jennings' office. The drugs were intercepted by federal agents,
Nelson also accused Reshen of mishandling his money and sued him. A settlement was reached out of court.
Whitney Houston, Tom Petty and Joan Baez's music agent Peter Grosslight has lost his battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 68. The William Morris Endeavor board member passed away on Thursday (21Aug14), according to Billboard.com.
Grosslight began his career in 1974, when he founded Regency Artists. He joined the William Morris Agency in 1992 when it acquired Triad Artists.
Throughout his career, Grosslight worked with several musicians including Charlotte Church, the Eagles, Journey, Luis Miguel, Brian Setzer and Carly Simon.
He also organised TV music specials with Tina Turner and Bruce Willis and secured the American rights for the Prince's Trust Concerts and Nelson Mandela's birthday show.
A joint statement from WME CEOs Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell reads: "Peter was a true gentleman, whose generosity and unique sense of humor will be deeply missed.
"He was a pioneer in our industry and represented some of the greatest performers of our time. In addition to being a tremendous agent, he served as a valuable mentor to many of us. It was a privilege to work with him."
One of the rare gems we've seen hit the single-digit channels since the turn of the millennium, The Office, actually sported a ton of directors you've more than likely heard of. Some of them were already famous upon helming an episode or two of the NBC mockumentary, others were pinned at the starting line of what has proved to be a rocket-fueled race to stardom. Pioneering country guitarist Velma Smith has died at the age of 87. The musician passed away on Thursday (31Jul14) in Madison, Tennessee.
Smith began performing on a local Kentucky radio station with her sister Mildred at the age of 12 and later went on to play with the likes of Ernest Tubb, Carl Smith and Roy Acuff.
However, it wasn't until the late 1950s that her career really took off as she became the first female rhythm guitar player to perform on records cut in Nashville, Tennessee.
She worked with artists such as Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings and Ray Price and her song credits include Hank Locklin's Please Help Me, I'm Falling in 1960 and Skeeter Davis' The End of the World in 1962.
She was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville in January (14) as part of the Class of 2014, which also featured Peter Frampton, Buddy Guy and Randy Bachman from Bachman Turner Overdrive.
Smith was married to Price's pal, fiddle player-turned-producer James 'Hal' Smith, from 1948 until his death in 2008.
A new multi-million dollar TV epic is to chart the 60-year reign of British monarch Queen Elizabeth II. The Crown, which has a reported budget of $160 million (£100 million), will chart the Queen's life from her marriage to Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in 1947 to the present day.
The script for the 20-hour epic will be penned by Peter Morgan, the screenwriter behind 2006 film The Queen, with the assistance of director Stephen Daldry.
Casting officials are said to be looking for three actresses to play the monarch in different stages of her life.
A source tells Britain's Daily Mail, "There will be hundreds and hundreds of roles to be cast, from prime ministers to international leaders such as the U.S. presidents she has met. And probably Nelson Mandela will be in there, too... And don't forget Prince Philip - that's going to be a huge role for an actor, or more likely several. People will play Charles (Prince of Wales), Diana (Princess of Wales), Camilla (Duchess of Cornwall), William (Prince William), Kate (Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge)... the whole lot of them."
Bosses at web streaming service Netflix have reportedly secured the rights to premiere the show worldwide in 2016.
Rock icons Brian May, Bill Wyman and Roger Daltrey joined artist Sir Peter Blake at the Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday (29Apr14) to unveil his new artwork. Blake, who created the iconic cover for The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, has made a new pop art piece similar to his most famous work.
The mural is a montage of almost 400 celebrities who have appeared at the renowned London venue from 1871 to the present day, including famous figures such as Nelson Mandela, Diana, Princess of Wales and the Dalai Lima. They rub shoulders with musicians ranging from The Beatles to Wyman's band The Rolling Stones and relative newcomers One Direction and Beyonce.
The rockers helped Blake present the artwork to the public, with The Who frontman Daltrey saying he loves the "energy of the mural".
Blake had not seen the print of the finished piece until its unveiling and confessed that, despite the scale of the artwork, it was easier to make than than his famous album cover thanks to digital advances.
He says, "I've only seen it on computer. Hi-def (high definition) images are just clearer and better. Sgt. Pepper was a much more laborious process. Each cut-out had to be printed up photographically and stuck down and hand-tinted. Now I'd do it on a computer obviously."
The Wire star Tray Chaney is set to produce and star in a movie about late rapper Mac Dre. The actor will play Dre's friend Curtis 'Kilo Curt' Nelson and has cast four of his former TV co-stars in the film, but he has not revealed any further details.
He tells radio host Mr. Peter Parker, "I'm a producer on a Mac Dre biopic. It's a two picture film deal about Mac Dre, his life, his music, how he affected the culture of hip hop and some of the artists."
Mac Dre, real name Andre Hicks, was killed in 2004.
For the bulk of every Rocky and Bullwinkle episode, moose and squirrel would engage in high concept escapades that satirized geopolitics, contemporary cinema, and the very fabrics of the human condition. With all of that to work with, there's no excuse for why the pair and their Soviet nemeses haven't gotten a decent movie adaptation. But the ingenious Mr. Peabody and his faithful boy Sherman are another story, intercut between Rocky and Bullwinkle segments to teach kids brief history lessons and toss in a nearly lethal dose of puns. Their stories and relationship were much simpler, which means that bringing their shtick to the big screen would entail a lot more invention — always risky when you're dealing with precious material.
For the most part, Mr. Peabody & Sherman handles the regeneration of its heroes aptly, allowing for emotionally substance in their unique father-son relationship and all the difficulties inherent therein. The story is no subtle metaphor for the difficulties surrounding gay adoption, with society decreeing that a dog, no matter how hyper-intelligent, cannot be a suitable father. The central plot has Peabody hosting a party for a disapproving child services agent and the parents of a young girl with whom 7-year-old Sherman had a schoolyard spat, all in order to prove himself a suitable dad. Of course, the WABAC comes into play when the tots take it for a spin, forcing Peabody to rush to their rescue.
Getting down to personals, we also see the left brain-heavy Peabody struggle with being father Sherman deserves. The bulk of the emotional marks are hit as we learn just how much Peabody cares for Sherman, and just how hard it has been to accept that his only family is growing up and changing.
But more successful than the new is the film's handling of the old — the material that Peabody and Sherman purists will adore. They travel back in time via the WABAC Machine to Ancient Egypt, the Renaissance, and the Trojan War, and 18th Century France, explaining the cultural backdrop and historical significance of the settings and characters they happen upon, all with that irreverent (but no longer racist) flare that the old cartoons enjoyed. And oh... the puns.
Mr. Peabody & Sherman is a f**king treasure trove of some of the most amazingly bad puns in recent cinema. This effort alone will leave you in awe.
The film does unravel in its final act, bringing the science-fiction of time travel a little too close to the forefront and dropping the ball on a good deal of its emotional groundwork. What seemed to be substantial building blocks do not pay off in the way we might, as scholars of animated family cinema, have anticipated, leaving the movie with an unfinished feeling.
But all in all, it's a bright, compassionate, reasonably educational, and occasionally funny if not altogether worthy tribute to an old favorite. And since we don't have our own WABAC machine to return to a time of regularly scheduled Peabody and Sherman cartoons, this will do okay for now.
If nothing else, it's worth your time for the puns.

With so many different awards organizations announcing their nominations one after the other, it's difficult to remember how heavily to weigh each one's picks when filling out your Oscar pool sheet. Generally speaking, the BAFTAs are a fairly safe guide when it comes to the Best Picture category. Since 2008, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts has accurately predicted the Academy's top winners, with (even more impressively) only two discrepancies in Best Picture nominations throughout those five years (both in 2012, interestingly enough). Looking at this latest batch of BAFTA's chief nominees — which includes...
American Hustle,Captain Phillips,Gravity,Philomena,and 12 Years a Slave
— we're not especially surprised by any of the films included in as much as we are a bit displaced over the absence of one of this past year's biggest titles: The Wolf of Wall Street. By now, everyone with his ear close to the conversation is predicting that Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave is a lock for the Best Picture Oscar, but the consideration rarely comes without honorable mention of Martin Scorsese's Wolf. Still, the satirical picture is far from awards fodder. Called far too "extreme" for the Academy's liking, the 3-hour tour de force of mortifying hedonism would be a far cry from an Oscar even without the competition of 12 Years. Instead, as suggested by BAFTA's list of Best Picture nods, organizations are leaning towards the safer, sweeter, more palatable, less controversial, and effectively less good spiritual counterpart to Wolf of Wall Street: American Hustle.
Hustle is a fine movie all its own — it's fun, dynamic, well-acted, and does indeed feel "lived in." But it falls shy of the artistic reach represented by fellow con man epic Wolf, to which comparisons are inevitable (you can hear a terrific discussion on the matter on the latest episode of Fighting in the War Room). While we'd be hard pressed to deny David O. Russell's funny, campy, emotionally charged picture its due recognition of quality, the choice to nominate it for Best Picture over Wolf of Wall Street seems like a statement of fear: "We don't want to nominate that large, messy, outrageous picture that's got everybody all in a huff," mutters a nervous BAFTA. "But what about the one with the hair? That's sorta like Wolf of Wall Street, but cleaner. Jolly good!"
The choice is a scary one, if only that it suggests the possibility that BAFTA has veered away from Wolf of Wall Street due to the volatility associated with the movie rather than due to the quality therein. By this token, would a few more Armond Whites have robbed 12 Years a Slave of its nomination? How about a few more Neil deGrasse Tysons stealing the nod from Gravity?
Hopefully, the Academy will not emulate this aversion to Scorsese's movie — one that more than deserves mention, and would even take home a few trophies in a just system.
