Veteran rocker Sting took to the stage to sing with the cast on the opening night of his new musical The Last Ship in Chicago, Illinois. The Police star's show opened at the city's Bank of America Theatre on Wednesday (25Jun14) ahead of its planned Broadway debut in October (14), and the rocker was in the audience with his wife Trudie Styler.
At the end of the performance, Sting took to the stage for the curtain call and led the cast in a song, according to New York Post gossip column Page Six.
Other stars who turned out for the musical's opening included Paul Simon, James Taylor, Styx singer Dennis DeYoung and AC/DC's Brian Johnson.
The show received mixed reviews from critics, who questioned whether the production, set in a doomed shipyard in Sting's hometown in the north of England, could draw in audiences on Broadway.
Steven Oxman of variety writes, "Do you want to live for two-and-a-half hours in a beautifully sad song?... The show currently works as a collection of songs in search of a complete story, or perhaps as a concept album - filled with mood and emotion and character and sensibility, but swaying as it takes on specifics. What seems to be missing is a driving conflict."
The Chicago Tribune's Chris Jones adds, "(Many) scenes... still have the air of a semi-staged concept album... The Last Ship already is a worthy and earnest musical, but we know how Broadway loves to take those down. Just look at last season."
Lewis Lazare of the Chicago Business Journal concludes, "Most of the theatre crowds in the early going at least will probably have come to hear Sting's music for the show. Fans of his work may find that much of it sounds familiar and pleasant to hear performed in a theatrical setting. But hardcore theatre buffs will soon realise Sting's style of music - for the most part - simply doesn't sit comfortably in a big Broadway musical context."
British singer Ed Sheeran has hinted he has bedded a mystery Hollywood superstar.
The A Team hitmaker dishes the dirt on several ex-girlfriends on his upcoming new album X, and in one song, Take It Back, he sings the line: "Sleeping with a movie star and adding to the population". Now he has confirmed the lyric is based on a real-life romance - but is coyly refusing to name the actress he enjoyed a fling with.
Sheeran tells Q magazine, "I'm British so I have to be a gentleman in these situations and not say any names. But you know what? I spent a year in America and did what any young lad would, which is experience Hollywood life. I think that's the best way to put it..."
This season of RuPaul’s Drag Race is filled with some of the most talented and attractive queens in Drag Race herstory. However, there is one clear standout: Bianca del Rio. She is loved by the judges, her fellow contestants, and all of America! In other seasons, the home stretch has been a nail-biter. But this season it seems like the final three, set to be named in two weeks, couldn’t be clearer to super fans of the show. The secrets of World of Wonder are trapped tighter than Area 51, but anyone watching the show can see even who the last two remaining competitors will be. It’s clear this drag race is between Bianca and Adore Delano. It may be insanely early to call it, but Bianca seems virtually unstoppable. If she doesn't win there will be riots in the streets, cats will give birth to snakes, and there will be a Rupocalypse.
Her Royal Highness Bianca Del Rio
Why she’ll win: Bianca is the entire package. She’s got the comedy down pat. As a self-proclaimed insult comic, she is not only able to make everyone laugh at the shadiest of reads. She also has one of the quickest wits on the series and possibly the planet Earth. She has exceeded in all of the challenges and has yet to be in the bottom two. She also is channeling all of the series winners. She has the pageantry of BeBe Zahara Bennet, the polish of Chad Michaels, the salty but lovable heart of Tyra Sanchez, the poise of Raja, and her own distinct style like Sharon Needles. She also is a killer comedy queen like Jinkx Monsoon. Oh, and she can sew an entire dress during the length of a song:
Why she'll take second place: Whether it’s her sexy selfies on Tumblr, memorable memes, or videos of her doing live musical performances, Adore is winning the Internet. The judges love her scrappy underdog approach to drag. However, she’s more polished than she seems with stunning looks an amazing performances. She’s genuinely won the court of public opinion. Despite her occasionally monumental screw-ups on the show no one wants her to leave. In any other season of the show, she would win hands down. However, for her to beat Bianca she’ll have to develop the ability to fly, psychically summon Latoya Jackson, and turn water in RuPaul’s new Glamazon perfume. Did we mention she sings live?
Why she might take third: BenDeLa has the makings of the Top 3 with an effervescent personality and an addictive voice. She has performed admirably, however her personality is touch and go. She’s adorkable in and out of drag. But, like the equally polished Courtney Act, she’s a bit cocky. No one wants to crown a cocky queen as America’s Next Drag Superstar. It’s hard to reconcile some of her saltier comments about the other queens with her “I’m so nice” persona. Unlike other underdogs on the show like Jinkx and Sharon, she seems to be more perpetrator than victim. But she does deserve the title of Top 3. Her NSFW take on The Little Mermaid is legendary.
Why she might take third: Courtney has showmanship. She can sing, act, perform and has some of the most memorable costumes of the runway. She’s a great host and has the makings of a true television personality. Courtney looks the most like a biological woman of possibly anyone in the show’s history. However, Drag Race is not a beauty competition. Like BenDeLa, Courtney has shown the darker side of Sears. Her picking on Joslyn Fox, who admittedly idolizes her, was a bit of a rub. She also seems to be playing the game too hard and is too polished. She seems less her authentic self and more like an actor at a press junket. However, she does have a shot at winning America’s Next Top Model. After all, she almost won Australian Idol.
Why she's the dark horse: Poor Darienne is another victim of there being too many talented queens this season. Darienne is the first big girl that could take the crown. She’s funny and not as bitter as queens of the past. She is sweet, funny, and owns her fabulous looks. Sadly, she’s not in contention for the Top 3 unless something were to happen to both Courtney and BenDeLa in the next two episodes. Does anyone have a tire iron? Here’s hoping she gets on Drag Race: All Stars because she could destroy the competition. She even appeared on Ricki Lake and inspired Pandora Boxx to do drag.
Singer Willie Nelson has thrown his support behind an initiative to fight a coal mining practice, which involves blowing up mountaintops, by recording a rendition of America The Beautiful for a public service announcement. The On The Road Again hitmaker has released a video, via the Natural Resources Defense Council, in which he sings the patriotic song as pictures of destruction caused by mountaintop removal are flashed onscreen.
A message written at the end of the video reads: "The Appalachian Mountains (in the U.S.) are a national treasure, but mountaintop removal coal mining is destroying them forever. Obliterating forests, polluting the air and water and flooding the valleys. It won't stop unless we do something."
"In its own way, the show revolves around all of us. I have my oldest son Steven on lead guitar and (he has a) great voice; I have Maurice's daughter, Sally, who feels so emotionally connected to it (the music), because of her dad, she's there too and she sings great." Bee Gees icon Barry Gibb is turning his upcoming solo tour of North America into a family affair after inviting his son and his niece to join him on the road. The family members previously hit the stage together for the Australian leg of the Mythology: The Tour Live shows last year (13).
Abigail Breslin is most well known for her stint as America’s quintessential little girl, replacing Dakota Fanning once she got too big and had to be euthanized. Breslin proved to be a far better work horse than most small children, earning an Oscar nomination in 2006 for her portrayal of a pageant hopeful in Little Miss Sunshine. Her breakout role came a few years earlier in 2002 as a foil-wearing country bumpkin in M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs. Back then, Abigail’s character expressed herself by pouring glasses of water but refusing to drink them because they tasted old. Well, it appears that now little Abigail has devised another way of catching people’s attention: exposing her breasts.
In a recent shoot with provocative photographer Tyler Shields, a 17-year-old Breslin is stripped of her foil hat and is gallivanting around nude in a sudsy bath tub. "I don't make these conscious decisions to do it to, like, prove to the world that I'm grown up. I think people see my work and see what I do and see that I'm grown up. But yeah, I'm almost 18,” she says. According to Abigail- she’s not, like, trying to shock anybody to show that she's maturing. The progression of her acting can speak for itself; but just to elaborate on her versatility, here are some tasteful shots of her naked and sucking on a lollipop. "I wanted to do something iconic with her, something simple but timeless," said Shields, who has made a name for himself by pushing the envelope with his suggestive photography. In one of his famous spreads, Lindsay Lohan was being fondled while handling a bloody knife, and in another she straddled a man holding him at gunpoint.
In this day and age when Hannah Montana sings about club drugs while dancing like rabid animal in heat, and the freckled kid from The Parent Trap is scantily posing between jail sentences, it’s no surprise that Abigail Breslin is publicly disrobing to get noticed. But it is yet one more event that forces us to ask ourselves an alarming question: Why do so many child stars go straight from a role on the Mickey Mouse Club to a walking caricature of Human Papillomavirus? We may never know why they choose to abandon their integrity, but one thing is certain: Abigail Breslin is our new favorite!
Jazz singer Esperanza Spalding has recruited Stevie Wonder, Harry Belafonte and Janelle Monae for her provocative new music video, in which she calls on U.S. government officials to shut down infamous detention camp Guantanamo Bay. The Grammy winner sings and raps about the need to close the prison centre in Cuba in the promo for her new track We Are America, which features cameos from her peers standing up for the rights of the detainees, all suspected terrorists who have been held in custody for years without being formally charged or placed on trial.
Spalding felt compelled to speak out about the alleged human rights abuses going on behind closed doors at Guantanamo Bay, where some detainees have been on hunger strike for over six months, after learning that officials there have been reportedly force-feeding prisoners by shoving tubes up their noses and down to their stomachs - a practice which has been deemed a form of torture by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR).
The singer says, "I want to help Congress see that there is public support for the goal of closing Guantanamo.
"The first time I heard about the mass hunger strike at Guantanamo, I was appalled and embarrassed about what my country was doing. As I learned that there were far better options on the table, and that what is going on at Guantanamo is a clear violation of U.S. human rights obligations, I felt I had to do something.
"We have to see past all of the stereotypes, negativity and stigma, and the culture of resistance and fear, and look straight to the basic intrinsic rights of all people, and work to protect those rights. They're not reserved for any individual person or context. This issue is about the basic human rights of all people."
The video was released on Monday (18Nov13), a day before members of the U.S. Senate voted in favour of loosening restrictions on transferring prisoners out of Guantanamo Bay, potentially paving the way for the complete closure of the facility.
Spalding and her celebrity pals aren't the only musicians who have urged authorities to close Guantanamo Bay - rockers Trent Reznor, Pearl Jam and R.E.M. have all previously thrown their support behind the same campaign, while rapper/actor Mos Def was filmed being force fed for a hard-hitting campaign ad, which debuted earlier this year.
Saturday Night Live has come under fire for their lack of diversity. When asked about having African American female cast members on the show, Kenan Thompson told TV Guide, “Like in auditions, they just never find ones that are ready.” This is ironic considering Thompson has been doing sketch comedy since he was a child and barely seems "ready."
SNL has shown poor stats across the board. Fred Armisen, due to his Venezuelen and Japanese roots, was holding down double duty as the show’s longest running Latino and Asian cast member. SNL has only had one full-fledged Asian cast member if you count parts of Armisen and Rob Schneider. Nasim Pedrad holds down the fort as the only Middle Eastern cast member on the show. Kate McKinnon made history as the first out lesbian cast member on the show. She is one of three LGBTQ actors to ever be series regulars on the show. Terry Sweeney was out on the show and Danitra Vance was posthumously confirmed to be a lesbian.
Here are some of our recommendations for cast members that could help diversify the popular sketch comedy series.
Goldman co-starred with Mckinnon on The Big Gay Sketch Show. She does amazing impressions including Liza Minelli and Suze Orman, she sings, and tours the country doing stand up. She stars in a bunch of web series with her comedy partner Brandy Howard. She is currently starring on Bravo’s The People’s Couch.
Johnson has already been a cast member on Mad TV and had multiple stand up specials. A clip of her character, Bonquiqui, has received over 60 million hits on YouTube.
Nyima Funk is more than ready to be on SNL. She has performed on nearly every improv and sketch comedy show. Her credits include CW’s Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Comedy Central’s Key & Peele, NBC’s Thank God You’re Here, MTV’s Wild ‘N Out and Short Circuitz, and The George Lopez Show. Plus, she’s topical enough to get a video out at the start of this controversy.
Droege is one of the hardest working gay men in Hollywood. He has become a YouTube celebrity with his impersonation of Chloë Sevigny. He’s done sketch, improv, impersonations and starred in Hot In Cleveland, Key & Peele, How I Met Your Mother, Up All Night, and New Girl to name a few.
Shangela (D.J. Pierce)
Kenan Thompson may not want to do drag but comedian D. J. Pierce would be happy to. He made a name for himself as Shangela Laquifa Wadley. He was the first contestant to be brought back for a second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. He has starred on Glee, Community, Terriers, Dance Moms, 2 Broke Girls, Detroit 187, and The Mentalist. He also stars in a hilarious web series with actress and singer, Jenifer Lewis.
Villaseñor recently appeared on America’s Got Talent where she showcased her musical impressions. Not only can she impersonate celebrities like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Zooey Deschanel, she can sing like them too. A reel of her impressions got over a million YouTube views.
Like Thompson, Iglesias also starred on All That with Amanda Bynes and Nick Cannon. He was a contestant on Last Comic Standing. He even starred with Channing Tatum’s abs in Magic Mike.
These are just a few of the many comedians, impressionists and actors that could bring not only comedy but diversity to SNL. Who would you recommend?
Youtube Typical American kids spend their formative years learning about the world through animals. From classroom pets to best friends found in books and on the Disney Channel — The Berenstain Bears, Franklin, Little Bear, Clifford, Bear in the Big Blue House... I can keep going — children spend a good amount of time in the company of these wild beings. However, the Norwegian band Ylvis has taken this innocent curiosity in animals and turned it into a creepily compelling music video (below).
Ylvis, a band composed of two brothers, has had little luck becoming music super stars in their native Norway and have decided to try and break into the American music market. Unfortunately, they felt this video was the way to do it. "The Fox," a video showcasing adults dressed up as animals, was uploaded to YouTube on Sept. 3 and has already received 250,000 views. Seriously, America?
Not only do adults dress as animals, meowing and mooing to their heart's content, the band actually wrote a song about the noise a fox makes — and they spend the majority of the video spewing random sounds as they try to guess. While making these noises, Ylvis and its group of misfit animal-humans run into a forest lit by neon strobe lights. If you didn't already feel like you were on a bad Acid trip, this will get you there. A grandfather-like old man then enters the frame and starts to sings out the words of a childrens' book, as if we weren't disturbed enough. By the end of this freaky journey into the scariest woods ever, a real fox appears and sings to the camera… summing up one of the most bizarre music videos of all time.
While many people left comments on the YouTube video expressing their confusion, others seemed to like the song, one viewer even commenting, "Best. Song. Ever. Of all time." Whether loved, hated, or confounded, "The Fox" has gone viral and entered the lives of unsuspecting YouTube viewers everywhere — and now we can't stop watching.

Miley Cyrus might have the best of both worlds but that certainly does not include a role on Broadway — and we have the leaked audio to prove it.
On Sunday, a leaked version of the singer covering "On My Own" from Les Misérables was released to our ears' dismay. Because the clip's origins are unclear, we aren't totally positive that these pipes are the real Smiley Miley's... but it definitely sounds like her! And it also sounds like she has quite a bit of work to do before she lands a gig on the Great White Way.
Whether the 20-year-old singer of "We Can't Stop" is actually on her own remains to be unclear. Following reports that she had split from fiancé Liam Hemsworth, Cyrus was spotted in Alberta, Canada, visiting the Australian actor while he films his latest project Cut Bank. When the artist formerly known as Hannah Montana was questioned about her relationship status with the hunky star of The Hunger Games on Good Morning America, she simply stated, "I'm wearing a ring, so... "
Listen to Cyrus' leaked cover above (at your own risk) and then compare it to what the song should actually sound like.
