Beyonce, Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry ruled the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum in Inglewood, California on Sunday (24Aug14), by picking up the biggest honours. The Roar hitmaker took home the first Moonman trophy of the night for Best Female Video for Dark Horse and was joined onstage by rapper Juicy J who appeared on the track.
Cyrus, who returned to the prizegiving a year after causing a stir with her raunchy routine with Blurred Lines singer Robin Thicke, was all about the message this year, choosing to use her Video of the Year acceptance speech for Wrecking Ball to pay tribute to homeless youths.
The pop star sent a man named Jesse to accept the prize on her behalf for the "1.6 million runaways and homeless youths in the United States, who are starving, lost and scared for their lives right now."
He continued, "I know this because I am one of these people... If you want to make a powerful change in the world right now, please join us and go to Miley's Facebook.com page. A dream you dream alone is only a dream, but a dream you dream together is reality."
Beyonce was feted with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and wowed the crowd with a show-stopping performance featuring a medley of hits from her self-titled album, including Partition, Flawless and Drunk in Love.
After her stunning set, which brought the audience to its feet, she was presented with the accolade by daughter Blue Ivy and husband Jay Z, who called his wife "the greatest living entertainer."
Beyonce tearfully accepted her award, saying, "I'm so full. Thank you, I have nothing to say, but I'm filled with so much gratitude. I just thank God for this moment and I love y'all so much. Blue I love you, my beloved I love you, my fans I love you, MTV I love you, goodnight."
The moment appeared to be her bid to once and for all end divorce rumours.
Ed Sheeran and Fifth Harmony were also big winners, taking home the Best Male Video and Artist to Watch awards, respectively.
Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj and Jessie J kicked off the ceremony with Grande singing her hit Break Free, followed by Nicki Minaj giving a jungle-themed performance of her new track Anaconda.
Jessie J then started off the trio's new hit song Bang Bang, but Minaj suffered an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction when she did not complete her quick-change in time and was forced to hold the front of her dress together so as to not expose her bare breasts as she returned to the stage.
Other performance highlights included Sam Smith with his hit song Stay With Me and Maroon 5, who made their VMAs debut with a performance of Maps outside of the venue.
Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora also hit the The Forum stage for their first-ever live performance of Black Widow.
There was also a couple of serious moments in among the festivities - Robin Williams, who passed away earlier this month (Aug14), was remembered and rapper Common asked for a moment of silence for Missouri teenager, Michael Brown, who was killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri on 9 August (14), sparking the ongoing unrest in the state.
The 2014 MTV VMAs winners at press time were:
Video of the Year - Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus

Best Male Video - Sing by Ed Sheeran

Paramore's performing skills were tested at the Reading Festival in England on Friday night (22Aug14) when their set was wrecked by a power failure. The speakers blew in the middle of a speech by singer Hayley Williams, and the American act had to improvise while engineers spent 15 minutes resolving the sound problem.
Williams and her bandmates sat down at the front of the stage and she told fans at the front, "The system is down but they're working on it. We're just going to pretend this never happened."
The power was finally restored to a single microphone, prompting the band to play an acoustic version of their ballad Only Exception.
Williams refused to let the sound issues ruin her night, telling fans, "I'm never going to forget this. Alright Reading that was unbelievable."
Full power was restored a few minutes later, allowing the band to wrap up their set with a medley of hits like Misery Business and Proof.
After the show, Williams wrote in post on Twitter.com, "The power outage in the middle of the set tonight was possibly the best thing that could've happened during our 1st headliner @ Reading (sic)... To be able to have a 100 per cent candid & vulnerable moment w/ (with) that many people & at such a high pressure show was so satisfying."
Queens Of The Stone Age headlined the first day of the weekend event, while former My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way helped open proceedings with his first-ever solo festival show.
Punk trio Blink-182 headlined Reading's sister festival in Leeds, England.
Life on the road is beginning to take its toll on 25-year-old Paramore star Hayley Williams and she is coming to terms with the fact she's not a teenager anymore. The Misery Business singer admits she can no longer perform at her best by simply showing up at the venue with a stomach full of fast food.
Williams tells Rolling Stone magazine, "Seven or eight years ago, we would go to Taco Bell, grab a bean burrito and run onstage. Now, getting ready for a show takes two hours - (bandmates) Jeremy (Davis) and Taylor (York) have to wrap their ankles, and I have to do stretches so I don't hurt my neck from headbanging. I'm loving it, but I definitely might collapse at one of these shows."
The singer forced the band to scrap two gigs in Texas last week (beg04Aug14) after falling ill with exhaustion-related symptoms and a chest infection.
She resumed dates on the Momentour, a double-header with Fall Out Boy, on Thursday (07Aug14). After the gig, Williams gave fans an update on her health, tweeting, "Made it thru (through) the show tonight!! Only coughed up some green no big (deal)."
Rihanna and Eminem kicked off their joint tour in California on Thursday night (07Aug14), treating fans to a catalogue of their hits and a number of expletive-laden onstage collaborations.
The pair unveiled their Monster Tour at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, and they opened the first show with a pre-taped skit which showed the pop star visiting her rapper pal in prison and featured a cameo appearance from The Sopranos star Michael Imperioli as a guard.
Both stars thrilled the crowd with their hit singles, including Umbrella and The Real Slim Shady, and they teamed up for several new collaborations with Rihanna replacing Dido's vocals on Eminem's hit Stan.
The pair also covered Airplanes by B.o.B and Hayley Williams. The show ended with a rendition of the pair's hit collaboration Monster.
Paramore singer Hayley Williams returned to the stage in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Thursday (07Aug14) to restart the band's tour after taking time out to recover from exhaustion. The Still Into You hitmakers were forced to scrap two gigs in Texas this week (beg04Aug14) after frontwoman Williams fell ill with exhaustion and a chest infection.
However, by Thursday she was well enough to resume the shows on the Momentour, a double-header with Fall Out Boy.
Prior to the concert, she told fans on Twitter.com that she had completed some promotional duties that day and couldn't wait to get back on stage, writing, "Ok - 1st meet & greet in 4 days, completed. I'm still alive. Albuquerque will feel my wrath tonight!"
After the gig, Williams gave fans another update on her health, tweeting, "Made it thru (through) the show tonight!! Only coughed up some green no big (deal)... thx (thanks) Albuquerque!"
Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams has apologised for the band's axed shows in Texas as she recovers from exhaustion. Paramore are currently on the Momentour with fellow pop-rockers Fall Out Boy and they cancelled their show in Corpus Christi on Monday night (04Aug14) and in Dallas on Tuesday (05Aug14) due to Williams' health issues.
In a post on the band's official blog, the star explains she is battling a chest infection and exhaustion, but hopes to recover in time for the rest of the tour.
She writes, "Words in this tiny little message cannot begin to express my frustration, sadness, and overall loopiness... I absolutely hate cancelling anything. Admitting defeat is a tough thing for this gal... As for the rest of the tour. It is still on. Doctor thinks I'll be good to go in the next day and certainly before the next show."
Williams is due back on stage with Paramore in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Thursday (07Aug14).
"I'm gonna dance extra hard tonight during Ain't It Fun for Mr. Michael Jackson... Still hard to believe. Never forgotten!" Hayley Williams plans to honour the King of Pop on the fifth anniversary of his death at Paramore's show on Wednesday (25Jun14).
Paramore star Hayley Williams has brushed off suggestions Justin Bieber ripped off a piece of the rockers' fan artwork for the cover of his new single. Eagle-eyed Paramore devotees raised questions about the inspiration behind Bieber's art for the track We Were Born For This on Monday (28Apr14), when they drew comparisons to the image used on the group's 2007 release, Riot, which featured the title in black and orange sketchy typography.
The Baby hitmaker's single uses the same colour scheme and style of font, and it has since emerged that the exact artwork previously appeared on the Tumblr.com profile of a Paramore fan using the account imnotadisaster.
The striking similarities prompted a number of critics to take aim at Bieber online, with one Paramore follower writing, "Laziest artist award goes to Justin Bieber for literally googling pics for his next single and picking out a paramore one", while another tweeted, "So Justin Bieber's single cover was a Paramore fanart (sic) from 2011. He cropped the watermark. I'm laughing so hard."
The controversy has continued online, but singer Williams insists she won't be drawn into the debate.
She shared her feelings with Twitter followers by posting a photo of rockers New Found Glory rehearsing, alongside the caption, "Crushing on the dude @newfoundglory practice while everyone's freakin (sic) out about JB on twitter".
She also shared a screen grab from an episode of U.S. cartoon King of the Hill, in which one character attempts to apologise to another, only for him to respond, "I wasn't even listening".
In the accompanying caption, she writes, "My opinion on the whole JB/artwork thing is basically this."
Bieber has yet to comment on the artwork scandal.
Katy B has scored her first U.K. number one album after debuting Little Red at the top of the charts. The 24 year old Londoner edges out Ellie Goulding's Halcyon at the top of the countdown, while London Grammar lands in third place on the new chart.
Meanwhile, Clean Bandit have snagged their fourth week atop the Official UK Singles Chart with their song Rather Be.
Stay The Night, Zedd's collaboration with Paramore's Hayley Williams lands at two, while Pharrell Williams' Happy slides a spot to three.
Juno star Ellen Page has 'come out' as gay. The 26 year old, who was nominated for a best Actress Oscar for her role in the 2007 comedy/drama, made the revelation during an emotional speech at the Human Rights Campaign's Time To THRIVE conference in Las Vegas on Friday (14Feb14).
After taking to the podium during the event, aimed at lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth, Page told the audience, "I'm here today because I am gay," prompting a huge cheer and a standing ovation from the audience.
She went on to add, "Maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility. I also do it selfishly because I'm tired of hiding and I'm tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered."
Page's revelation prompted an outpouring of praise and support from fellow stars on Twitter.com, including Evan Rachel Wood, who wrote, "Congrats (sic) my friend," and Twilight's Anna Kendrick, added, "Mad mad mad mad mad mad crazy love and praise for Ellen Page today. Congrats (sic) to you, you light, talent, and beauty."
Emile Hirsch writes, "Props to Ellen Page for helping so many people through their daily struggles by courageously leading by example and coming out on V Day! (Valentine's Day)," Paramore star Hayley Williams reveals, "Ellen Page just made me cry on Valentine's Day. With happy tears!" and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, writes, "Love love love Ellen Page & the message she sent out today! What a perfect way to end Valentines Day."
Page later took to her own Twitter.com page to acknowledge the kind messages, adding, "Thank you (Human Rights campaign) and everyone for all the love and support."
