One Direction star Zayn Malik has received death threats from fans for posting a message online in support of Palestinians.
Malik is the latest celebrity to face a backlash for voicing his opinion on the growing conflict in the Middle East, following in the footsteps of Rihanna and Selena Gomez, who also got in trouble with fans.
The singer posted the '#FreePalestine' hashtag on Twitter.com on Sunday (27Jul14), which instantly sparked outrage amongst many Israeli fans, who posted death threats to the star, telling him to "kill himself" and threatening: "Let me kill you."
One user wrote, "Zayn should (not) say what he said I mean if we're such a terrorists like he said why wouldn't we kill him for saying that huh (sic)."
Malik has not responded to the comments but the post is still on his page.
Louis Tomlinson's One Direction bandmates showed their support by attending his mother's wedding on Sunday (20Jul14). Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Niall Horan were all on hand to watch Tomlinson's mum Johannah Poulston exchange vows with her partner Daniel Deakin in their hometown of Doncaster, England.
While fellow bandmate Zayn Malik was not at the nuptials, Tomlinson's longtime girlfriend, Eleanor Calder, served as one of Poulston's bridesmaids.
Horan and Payne, who was joined by his girlfriend Sophia Smith, were spotted playing croquet at the reception.
Poulston and Deakin have been dating for two years, and in February (14), they welcomed twins, Ernest and Doris. Poulston split from her famous son's father Mark Tomlinson while the 22 year old was competing on The X Factor U.K. in 2010.
A representative for Zayn Malik has dismissed rumours the One Direction singer has married his fiancee Perrie Edwards in secret. Fans of the boyband were sent into a frenzy this week (beg14Jul14) when the heartthrob posted a picture on his Instagram.com page which showed him wearing a ring on his wedding finger.
The snap sparked speculation the pair had shunned a high-profile wedding and married in secret, but a representative for Malik now insists the star is simply wearing an engagement ring.
The spokesperson says, "Perrie and Zayn are not married. The picture shows his engagement ring."
One Direction star Zayn Malik pulled out all the stops to throw fiancee Perrie Edwards a funfair-themed party for her 21st birthday. The Story of My Life hitmaker is in the middle of his European stadium tour with the boy band, but on his one day off on Wednesday (09Jul14), Malik flew from Barcelona, Spain back home to England to celebrate the Little Mix singer's milestone.
Guests including Edwards' bandmates Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall convened at the grounds of a country estate near the engaged couple's North London home, where various funfair food stands and game booths were set up. The party also featured a ferris wheel, bumper cars, and a bouncy castle.
When Malik turned 21 earlier this year (14), Edwards surprised her beau with a trip to Disneyland Paris.
One Direction star Louis Tomlinson has vowed to grow up and put his wild ways behind him now he is the co-owner of a British soccer club. The singer was announced as the new boss of England's Doncaster Rovers club on Thursday (19Jun14) after his takeover bid with former chairman John Ryan was finally accepted.
The deal was completed just weeks after Tomlinson was caught up in a drug scandal last month (May14) when a leaked video appeared to show him smoking marijuana with bandmate Zayn Malik.
Tomlinson has now acknowledged he needs to grow up and change his behaviour so he can be taken seriously as a businessman.
He tells Britain's The Sun newspaper, "I have to mature a little bit... This is life-changing for me. I'm going to have to start acting dead serious... I can't be a big kid anymore or play pranks. I am absolutely going to be very involved in the club.
"I will be committing a lot of time to it. I've said that I want to be across absolutely everything... I guess am a businessman now.
"I know there will be a few eyebrows raised about me doing this. But hopefully the results go a certain way and we'll create a successful club."
Tomlinson follows in the footsteps of Sir Elton John, who became the boss of the Watford soccer team in 1976, and he hopes to get tips from the pop veteran, saying, "I had thought about seeking his advice - but how on earth do you get in touch with Elton John? I don't know. Hopefully this will send the message out!"
A 25-year-old One Direction devotee from Texas has landed a six-figure book deal for her popular fan fiction tale about the band. Publishers at Simon & Schuster imprint Gallery Books have acquired the rights to Anna Todd's steamy story After, which has become a phenomena among fans of the boy band on digital self-publishing website Wattpad for over a year.
The tale follows the romance of a punk version of One Direction star Harry Styles and a college student called Tessa. Todd uploaded the story in daily instalments on Wattpad, where it became an instant hit.
After has been read over 800 million times and it became the site's most-shared story in 2013. Gallery Books bosses hope to publish a reworked version of After in November (14).
Meanwhile, film experts at United Talent Agency are also shopping the movie rights.
British singer Robbie Williams has offered under-fire One Direction stars Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson some words of advice in the wake of their 'dope' scandal, urging them to party in private. Singers Malik and Tomlinson faced a storm of controversy last month (May14) after a video leaked online showing them in Peru smoking a suspicious-looking cigarette and discussing illegal substances.
The Angels singer, who battled drink and drug demons after quitting British boyband Take That for a solo career, has now spoken out to warn the young stars to keep their partying away from fans.
He tells Britain's Sunday Mirror newspaper, "I think they should stop getting caught! Drop a shoulder, give them a dummy, but just don't get caught. I didn't get caught until I was at least 22 - maybe 23!"
One Direction star Zayn Malik thanked fans for their support following his marijuana controversy at the boy band's first of three sold-out Wembley Stadium gigs in London on Friday night (06Jun14). The pop star upset many young fans and their parents when video footage of himself and bandmate Louis Tomlinson smoking pot and joking about cannabis culture during a car ride in Peru surfaced last week (ends30May14).
Neither Malik nor Tomlinson had addressed the video or the fall-out from it before the band took the stage on Friday, but the singer took a moment to thank fans, stating, "Thank you for everything you've done for us from The X factor until now. You're the best fans in the world."
The controversy may have kept a handful of fans from attending the big gig, but the band still played to a full house as 90,000 devotees packed into Wembley.
Liam Payne was awestruck by the sight of so many people and told the audience, "Hello Wembley. I genuinely can't believe I'm saying that. Right now is the most surreal moment of my life.
"It's the best day of my life and you've made all our dreams come true."
He previously confessed that he had dreamed he was performing at Wembley naked the night before the concert.
Bandmate Niall Horan added on stage, "This is absolutely incredible. We were put together as a band less than 100 yards away from this arena and now here we are stood in front of you. We can't thank you enough."
Harry Styles took to Twitter.com after the concert to express his thoughts, writing, "Wembley. Wow. Thank you for a night impossible to ever forget."
One Direction star Louis Tomlinson will soon add soccer team owner to his resume after reaching an agreement to take over his beloved Doncaster Rovers Football Club. The British singer, who played with Doncaster's reserve squad in February (14), recently teamed up with former club chairman John Ryan to discuss a buyout with the team's current owners, Terry Bramall and Dick Watson, and a deal has reportedly been struck.
An official announcement about the acquisition was due to take place during a press conference at London's Wembley Stadium on Friday (06Jun14), before the first of One Direction's three sold-out gigs at the venue, but the media gathering was postponed amid concerns about Tomlinson's image rights.
The meeting has been rescheduled for next Wednesday (11Jun14), according to the BBC.
Under the terms of the deal, Tomlinson, 22, will reportedly serve as club co-chairman, but he and his business partners will face a challenge turning the team's fortunes around after Doncaster Rovers were relegated to the third tier of English soccer in May (14).
The successful Rovers takeover bid will come as a great distraction for the singer, who faced a backlash last week (ends30May14) when video footage, featuring Tomlinson and bandmate Zayn Malik smoking a marijuana blunt while in Peru, surfaced online.
The pair still has yet to comment directly on the drug scandal, but bandmate Liam Payne recently spoke out on his pals' behalf, insisting the stars are only young and will make mistakes as they grow up.
A Catholic priest has appealed to government officials in the Philippines to ban British boy band One Direction from the country. The What Makes You Beautiful hitmakers are not slated to perform in the Philippines until March, 2015, but Father Conegundo Garganta has launched a campaign to keep the band members away from the nation because he feels they are bad influences, according to the Manila Times.
He says, "Do not lead (the youth in) the wrong direction... Why admit poisonous influences? There is enough poison in our society. Parents should stop their children from buying the expensive concert tickets of (drug addicts)."
Garganta's statement comes a week after a video of bandmates Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik joking about cannabis culture while appearing to puff on a joint in a car in Peru leaked online.
Of English and Pakistani heritage, Zayn Malik auditioned for "The X Factor" (ITV, 2004- ) as a solo act but was instead grouped with fellow contestants Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson to form the boy band One Direction. After coming in third on the reality show, they hit No. 1 with their debut single "What Makes You Beautiful," scored the hit follow-up "Gotta Be You," and released their blockbuster debut album, 2011's Up All Night. Showered with European music awards, fan adulation and commercial success, One Direction then moved to conquer America with appearances on "Saturday Night Live" (NBC, 1975- ) and "iCarly" (Nickelodeon, 2007- ) coincided with the chart-topping release of their debut album stateside. Representing a new era of boy bands that seemed - at least on the surface - to be less packaged and more approachable, One Direction, as well as Zayn Malik, seemed poised to enjoy considerable success on the global stage.
Born Jan. 13, 1993 in Bradford, England, U.K., Zain Jawadd "Zayn" Malik was the son of an English mother and a Pakistani father. Growing up, he found that his mixed heritage set him apart from classmates, and ended up attending multiple schools before finding his social footing. A lifelong fan of R&B and rap music, he played with his appearance accordingly and developed a mystique that served him well. Determined to make it as a singer, he auditioned as a solo act for "The X Factor" (ITV, 2004- ) in 2010, but was sent to the show's musical boot camp where, with the personal encouragement of Simon Cowell, he memorably overcame his fear of performing with a dance routine. Despite this, Malik was deemed not ready to compete as a solo act.
Happily, this opened other professional doors for Malik, who was teamed with fellow contestants Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson to form One Direction. As a boy band, they placed third on "The X Factor" and ascended to international superstardom with the 2011 release of their debut single, "What Makes You Beautiful." Hitting number one on the U.K. singles chart and breaking sales records, the song paved the way for a follow-up hit, "Gotta Be You," and their global smash debut album, Up All Night. Continuing their meteoric rise, the band notched a sold-out U.K. tour and won three 4Music Awards (Best Group, Breakthrough and Video), a Brit Award (Best British Single for "What Makes You Beautiful") and two U.K. Kids' Choice Awards (Favorite U.K. Newcomer and Favorite Band).
Their European success led to their American breakthrough, with their album hitting No. 1 and One Direction replicating their European success in the States with a flood of endorsements, publicity appearances and television performances. They were featured as the musical guest (and appeared in a skit) on the Sofia Vergara-hosted episode of "Saturday Night Live" (NBC, 1975- ), booked a guest spot on "iCarly" (Nickelodeon, 2007- ), and announced plans for a 2012 world tour. Unlike the previous wave of boy bands, One Direction eschewed matching clothing and tightly choreographed dancing, radiating instead a seemingly less manufactured, less polished image. Although much of One Direction's appeal came from their unified front of playful energy, each member stood out in his own way. Malik, who sparked some controversy when he dated fellow "X Factor" contestant and six-years-older Rebecca Ferguson, appealed to fans due to his brooding demeanor and multiple tattoos.
By Jonathan Riggs
