Sam Smith was the toast of the 57th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday (08Feb15), walking away with four of the six honors he was nominated for, including the coveted Record of the Year.
The British soul sensation kicked off his celebrations early after claiming the very first award of the televised show for Best New Artist. He soon followed it up with the Best Pop Vocal Album for In The Lonely Hour, and was back onstage towards the end of the Los Angeles ceremony to wrap up his big night with wins for Song of the Year and Record of the Year for Stay With Me.
Taking to the stage for the fourth time, Smith poked fun at the ex-boyfriend who inspired the album, saying, "This is the best night of my life. I wanna thank the man who this record is about... Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys!"
Fellow six-time nominees Beyonce and Pharrell Williams each went home as triple winners, while Beck landed Best Rock Album and Album of the Year for Morning Phase - and almost had Kanye West repeat his infamous stage invasion at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, when he interrupted Taylor Swift to defend his pal Beyonce's honor. This time, the rapper approached Beck as he collected the Album of the Year accolade, which Beyonce was also nominated for, and pretended to head towards the mic, before laughing and returning to his seat in the front row - much to everyone's amusement.
AC/DC got the Grammy Awards off to a rocking start with a hits medley, while Madonna dazzled the Staples Center audience in a red and black matador costume to sing her new release Living For Love, and Rihanna, Kanye West and Sir Paul McCartney staged the first ever performance of their new collaboration, FourFiveSeconds.
Other performance highlights at the event, hosted by LL Cool J, came from Ed Sheeran and Electric Light Orchestra frontman Jeff Lynne; Katy Perry, who honored victims of domestic violence with a powerful rendition of By The Grace of God; Sam Smith and Mary J. Blige's soulful collaboration on Stay With Me, and Pharrell Williams, who gave his Happy tune a gospel makeover, complete with Hans Zimmer on guitar and Lang Lang on piano.

South African writer Andre Brink has died, aged 79. The novelist passed away on Friday (06Feb15) after falling ill on board a flight to Cape Town while returning from Belgium, where he had received an honorary doctorate.
The cause of death had not been confirmed as WENN went to press.
Brink was a successful novelist and an outspoken critic of apartheid. His books were translated into more than 30 languages and one of his most popular releases, A Dry White Season, was turned into a 1989 film starring Donald Sutherland, Susan Sarandon and Marlon Brando.
His other novels included Looking on Darkness and Philida, for which he was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2012.
Bosses at American retailer Toys 'R' Us have acquiesced to a petition from concern parents calling for action figures based on drug drama Breaking Bad to be removed from their stores. Susan Schrivjer from Florida created the petition last week (ends19Oct14) urging bosses of the chain store to stop selling the character models from the hit show because they represent "a dangerous deviation from their family friendly values".
Schrivjer notes that the Walter White figurine is holding a gun and a bag of crystal meth, the drug Bryan Cranston's character makes and sells in the adult drama.
The petition on Change.org gathered more than 8,000 signatures and prompted executives at the retailer to remove the controversial toys from stores on Tuesday (21Oct14).
A representative from Toys 'R' Us says in a statement which reads, "Let's just say, the action figures have taken an 'indefinite sabbatical'."
Prior to their decision, Emmy winner Cranston poked fun at the issue, taking to Twitter.com on Monday (20Oct14), writing, "'Florida mom petitions against Toys 'R Us over Breaking Bad action figures.' I'm so mad, I'm burning my Florida Mom action figure in protest."

Alongside a record degree of mediocrity, the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards also marked a few records in some of its top competitive categories. Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston took home the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series trophy last night: his fourth for the role of Walter White. With this latest achievement, Cranston has tied one Dennis Franz, who has held the record of four Best Dramatic Actor Emmys solo since 1999. The milestone begs us to look back through other Emmys records: Which stars have the most wins? The most nominations? And, perhaps tragically, the most nominations without a single win?
This bittersweet superlative goes to none other than Angela Lansbury, who never quite nabbed that trophy despite 12 Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series nominations as Murder, She Wrote star Jessica Fletcher.
Not only does Lansbury claim ownership of the most nominations without a win, she also has the most nominations period in any acting category. Alan Alda, Ted Danson, and Kelsey Grammer have all earned 11 nominations in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category (for M*A*S*H, Cheers, and Frasier respectively), and Mary Tyler Moore snagged 10 Lead Actress in a Comedy nominations for her eponymous sitcom. As for supporting categories, David Hyde Pierce has taken 11 nods for his work on Frasier, while Rhea Perlman and Loretta Swit have each earned 10 comedy nominations (Cheers and M*A*S*H).

Susan Sarandon is preparing to show off her journalism skills by guest-editing an upcoming issue of Time Out New York magazine. The Thelma & Louise star is to assume the responsibility of running the publication, instead of settling for an honorary role.
Sarandon will kick off her duties on Monday (21Jul14) when she will hold a staff meeting with the editorial team to pick pictures and a theme for the issue before deciding on page layouts.
Time Out New York editor-in-chief Terri White tells the New York Daily News, "She is genuinely going to do it. Often with this kind of thing people just say, 'Yeah, I'm going to guest edit.' But we drew up a job description for Susan, which shows all the things an editor-in-chief usually does. So she's doing it for real."
Actor Vincent Pastore has gone public with his prostate cancer fight after secretly battling the disease for the past year. The Sopranos star reveals he was diagnosed with the illness in March, 2013, shortly after landing a role as a mobster in Woody Allen's stage adaptation of Bullets Over Broadway and he was so worried cancer would rob him of his chance to shine on Broadway, he kept the news of his health crisis to himself.
He underwent surgery last July (13) and received radiation treatment at White Plains Hospital in New York between November (13) and January (14), all while attending "physically exhausting" rehearsals for the musical in Manhattan.
Pastore finally decided to come clean about his cancer battle to play director Susan Stroman and he was relieved when she didn't fire him from the cast.
He tells the New York Daily News, "I told her that if she had to get rid of me, to just get rid of me. Instead she started to cry. She hugged me and said, 'I will never get rid of you.' It was an amazing moment that gave me the strength to work even harder."
Pastore has also heaped praise on filmmaker Allen for his support throughout the ordeal and he cannot believe he has since made it to his 100th performance of Bullets Over Broadway, which opened in April (14).
He says, "I kept setting goals for myself during this illness. First, make it through rehearsals. Then to previews. I did that. Then to opening night. I did that. Then to 100 performances, a big deal on Broadway. Now I wanna make it to my 68th birthday, July 14th. Now producers are talking to me about maybe taking Bullets Over Broadway to London...
"Now I can officially say, 'OK, I'm a proud prostate cancer survivor.' I feel great..."
The actor is now making it his mission to raise awareness about the disease and he reveals his efforts helped one famous pal spot his cancer early.
He adds, "I warned a lot of my friends to go get checked out. One well-known actor did and he caught his prostate cancer in time."
Actress Susan Sarandon was accompanied by a special guest on Late Show With David Letterman on Monday (16Jun14) - her dog Penny, who was dressed up in a red, white and blue outfit, appears in Sarandon's new film Tammy.

Long emancipated from its reputation as the place where has-beens go for one last snag at the limelight, television is attracting big screen folks at the top of their games. A new league of blockbuster movie stars, admired thespians, and Oscar-nominated filmmakers alike are flocking to the comforts of premium cable, all with intriguing projects in tow. Here are a few big name figures taking to the TV game with promising prospects.
Who's that again? The guy who directed Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, The Fountain, and NoahWhat's he working on? MaddAddam, an adaptation of Margaret Atwood's speculative sci-fi novel trilogy (Oryx and Crake, Year Of The Flood, and MaddAddam).For whom? HBO.What's the deal? The story depicts a dystopian future in which genetic engineering has swept the human race. Aronofsky might direct, and is executive producing with his fiancée Brandi-Ann Milbradt and regular collaborator Ari Handel.[Deadline]

For the bulk of every Rocky and Bullwinkle episode, moose and squirrel would engage in high concept escapades that satirized geopolitics, contemporary cinema, and the very fabrics of the human condition. With all of that to work with, there's no excuse for why the pair and their Soviet nemeses haven't gotten a decent movie adaptation. But the ingenious Mr. Peabody and his faithful boy Sherman are another story, intercut between Rocky and Bullwinkle segments to teach kids brief history lessons and toss in a nearly lethal dose of puns. Their stories and relationship were much simpler, which means that bringing their shtick to the big screen would entail a lot more invention — always risky when you're dealing with precious material.
For the most part, Mr. Peabody & Sherman handles the regeneration of its heroes aptly, allowing for emotionally substance in their unique father-son relationship and all the difficulties inherent therein. The story is no subtle metaphor for the difficulties surrounding gay adoption, with society decreeing that a dog, no matter how hyper-intelligent, cannot be a suitable father. The central plot has Peabody hosting a party for a disapproving child services agent and the parents of a young girl with whom 7-year-old Sherman had a schoolyard spat, all in order to prove himself a suitable dad. Of course, the WABAC comes into play when the tots take it for a spin, forcing Peabody to rush to their rescue.
Getting down to personals, we also see the left brain-heavy Peabody struggle with being father Sherman deserves. The bulk of the emotional marks are hit as we learn just how much Peabody cares for Sherman, and just how hard it has been to accept that his only family is growing up and changing.
But more successful than the new is the film's handling of the old — the material that Peabody and Sherman purists will adore. They travel back in time via the WABAC Machine to Ancient Egypt, the Renaissance, and the Trojan War, and 18th Century France, explaining the cultural backdrop and historical significance of the settings and characters they happen upon, all with that irreverent (but no longer racist) flare that the old cartoons enjoyed. And oh... the puns.
Mr. Peabody & Sherman is a f**king treasure trove of some of the most amazingly bad puns in recent cinema. This effort alone will leave you in awe.
The film does unravel in its final act, bringing the science-fiction of time travel a little too close to the forefront and dropping the ball on a good deal of its emotional groundwork. What seemed to be substantial building blocks do not pay off in the way we might, as scholars of animated family cinema, have anticipated, leaving the movie with an unfinished feeling.
But all in all, it's a bright, compassionate, reasonably educational, and occasionally funny if not altogether worthy tribute to an old favorite. And since we don't have our own WABAC machine to return to a time of regularly scheduled Peabody and Sherman cartoons, this will do okay for now.
If nothing else, it's worth your time for the puns.
