Oscar winner Louis Gossett, Jr. is set to be honoured for his community work at R&B star Ne-Yo's New York charity benefit later this month (Aug13). The So Sick hitmaker will toast the achievements of the An Officer and a Gentleman actor as an adoptive parent and celebrate his work with inner city kids.
Celebrity photographer Johnny Nunez, who grew up in foster care before being adopted at the age of five, will also be among the honourees at The Compound Foundation's second annual Fostering A Legacy event.
A statement released by Ne-Yo reads, "I truly admire Louis Gossett Jr. for his bold initiative to adopt his son when he was in need. Johnny Nunez, who has been an advocate of our cause for years and Stuart Snyder, an active supporter of the foundation, are both well-respected individuals who we cannot thank enough. It is only right we honour these extraordinary men at this year's benefit."
Comedian Kevin Hart will co-host the Hamptons event on 17 August (13), while British singer Estelle will perform for guests.
Ne-Yo founded The Compound Foundation in 2007 to provide children in foster care and group homes the support needed to help them achieve their education and career dreams.
Comedian Kevin Hart has pleaded no contest to his April (13) DUI arrest in a bid to stay out of jail. The Think Like a Man star was charged with two counts of driving under the influence after police officers pulled him over in Los Angeles for speeding along a freeway.
On Monday (05Aug13), Hart pleaded no contest to one count of driving with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher, and in exchange the other count was dropped.
He was sentenced to three years probation and ordered to attend three months of alcohol education classes, according to TMZ.com.
Pop star Pink had reservations about having children with husband Carey Hart because of the "rocky" relationship she had with her mother. The Family Portrait hitmaker revealed that before she fell pregnant with daughter Willow Sage, now two, she wasn't convinced parenthood was a great idea.
She tells Australia's GQ magazine, "I didn't want kids. I was terrified. The relationship I had with my mother was really rocky at times. I had moments where I wanted a kid with Carey... You first fall in love, and you're like, 'We should have kids', and then it went away. But he always wanted kids and then we did it, and now it's like, 'F**k, this is so rad. It's more important than anything we've done.' Now I have someone to sing goofy-a** songs to all day and she likes it. She's not judging me. She's probably the only person who doesn't judge me."
Becoming a mother helped Pink, real name Alecia Moore, change her outlook.
She continues, "She's the coolest thing that has ever happened to me - she's really f**king cheeky and funny. She's just totally rearranged my view on life and my outlook, in every way and shape possible. I'm still a little bit nuts and I still have a really good time, and I still am me. But I wake up and start the day with a cuddle and that is the best thing in the world.
"My mother was so happy I had a girl, because she said then I would understand what she went through with me. I'll have to wait until she's a teenager."
Funnyman Chris Rock is teaming up with his famous pals Adam Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld and Tracy Morgan to shoot a new movie loosely based on his life. The comic arrived at the New York City premiere of Grown Ups 2 with his own camera crew last week (ends12Jul13) and reports indicate Rock is set to star in the as-yet untitled project, produced by Scott Rudin, as a version of himself, named Andre.
The movie will feature Rock announcing his engagement to Rosario Dawson on her fake reality show, and hanging out with his celebrity friends, including David Spade, Gabrielle Union and Kevin Hart.
The cast has been filming all over the Big Apple since June (13) and Rock recently shot a scene at Scores strip club with Sandler, Seinfeld and Whoopi Goldberg.
A source tells the New York Daily News, "Jerry and them did cameos inside. Sandler accuses a stripper of stealing his cell phone and she says, 'I have no clothes on, where would I put it?' Seinfeld says, 'I know where you could put it.' It's very funny."
Fourth-of-July always fuels an interesting summer holiday weekend, particularly since it is a floating holiday that can land on any day of the week and this year was no exception.Despicable Me 2 had un-minion sized debut this weekend, grossing an estimated $293.2 million worldwide! In North America with $142.1 million, Despicable Me 2 posted the biggest five day opening for an animated film and the top three day animated opening in July earning $82.5 million. This box office total is more than double Despicable Me’s gross of $71.2M in the same amount of days in these same 45 territories. DM2 is performing at the same level as such megahits as Toy Story 3, Ice Age 4, Madagascar 3 and Shrek 4. Landing in second place is the big budget action-packed western The Lone Ranger which despite the star power of Johnny Depp, the leading man presence of Armie Hammer and a built-in brand name managed a five day gross of just $48.9 million and a three day (F-S-S) gross of only $29.4 million. This was a tough weekend for the big budget Western, but a CinemaScore of B+ could help it reagin some steam in the coming days and weeks.Fox's hit R-rated comedy The Heat continues to kick butt dropping just 37% in its second weekend and taking the third spot with an arresting $25 million and $86.4 million to date.Disney's two-week champion Monsters University which has been a seemingly unstoppable force in the marketplace had another solid weekend with a fourth place finish earning $19.6 million and easily crossing the $200 milion mark in North America.Rounding out the Top 5, Paramount's Brad Pitt action zombie yarn World War Z also made its mark in its third weekend with $18.2 million against a modest 39% drop and $158.7 million in North America thus far. Impressively, Summit/Code Black Entertainment's comedy performance film Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain in a mere 876 theaters had a terrfic week laughing all the way to the bank with $17.5 million since its Wednesday debut. This very strong slate of current hit films has propelled the year-to-date box office to $5.7 billion and now stands just 1.2% behind last year's revenues at this point.Top Movies for Weekend of July 5 - July 7 (Estimates)Rank Movie Gross Theaters Avg.Per YTD Distributor01 Despicable Me 2 $82.518M 3,997 $20,645 $142.1M Universal02 The Lone Ranger $29.4M 3,904 $7,539 $48.9M Disney03 The Heat $25.0M 3,184 $7,852 $86.4M Fox04 Monsters University $19.6M 3,739 $5,239 $216.1M Disney05 World War Z $18.2M 3,316 $5,489 $158.7M Paramount06 White House Down $13.5M 3,222 $4,190 $50.5M Sony07 Man of Steel $11.4M 2,905 $3,929 $271.2M Warner Bros.08 Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain $10.1M 876 $11,530 $17.5M Summit/Lionsgate
Fourth-of-July always fuels an interesting summer holiday weekend, particularly since it is a floating holiday that can land on any day of the week. Thankfully this year the 4th does not land during the weekend when moviegoing hits its peak and would thus take a a bigger bite out of the box office. This since as expected, people generally like to watch fireworks and go to parties on that day and are therefore not in the movie theater.Of course that leaves room on Wednesday for a potentially huge day at the nation's multi-plexes with the one-two punch debut of Universal's animated and Minion-filled PG-rated sequel Despicable Me 2 and Disney's PG-13 The Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as the titular character. Both films have brand recognition with appeal to family audiences and as such should propel the industry to a massive midweek number.Added to the mix and opening on Wednesday as well is Lionsgate's comedy performance film Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain which has come on strong in tracking and should do very well on a per-theater basis in its 876 theaters with the potential for $10 million in its first five days of release. The odds favor a family oriented film leading the weekend with both Disney's two-week champion Monsters University and newcomer Despicable Me 2 certain to perform well over the holiday frame. It looks to us like the Minions have the clear edge with an expected gross of between $100 million and $110 million for the 5-day Wednesday through Sunday period. However, Monsters University has been a seemingly unstoppable force as it closes in on the $200 million mark to date, dominating the chart for two straight weekends and playing well mid week to boot. The other notable newcomer is the big budget action-packed western The Lone Ranger which boasts the star power of Johnny Depp, the leading man presence of Armie Hammer and a built-in brand name. A five day gross in the $60 million range and a three day (F-S-S) gross of around $40 million are expected for this big budget epic.Fox's hit R-rated comedy The Heat, Paramount's Brad Pitt action zombie yarn World War Z and Sony's White House Down starring Channing Tatum & Jamie Foxx will all contribute in a big way to the success of the weekend with each continuing to draw audiences from a variety of demographics. This very strong slate of current hit films has propelled the marketplace to a 11.82% revenue lead over the summer of 2012 at this point. This is good reason to celebrate...and of course honor our nation during the Fourth-of-July festivities.
