Actress Daniele Watts' plans to speak to students at her alma mater in California have been postponed by law school officials after she was charged with lewd conduct for allegedly having sex in her car. The 28 year old, who appeared as slave girl Coco in Django Unchained, had been booked to return to the University of Southern California on Wednesday (22Oct14) to discuss issues regarding "race, sexual expression and civil rights law", according to a post on Watts' Facebook.com page.
However, the event was pulled late on Tuesday (21Oct14) after Los Angeles prosecutors filed the misdemeanour charges against the actress and her boyfriend, Brian James Lucas, following a police encounter in September (14), when she was allegedly caught straddling her partner with her breasts exposed.
A spokeswoman for USC insists the cancellation has nothing to do with the accusations and reveals the guest lecture had to be rescheduled for a larger venue at the USC Gould Law School due to high demand, according to the New York Daily News.
Watts and Lucas, who deny the accusations against them, face up to six months behind bars if convicted of the lewd conduct charges.
They are due to face the counts in court next month (Nov14).
Django Unchained actress Daniele Watts and her boyfriend have been charged with misdemeanour lewd conduct for allegedly engaging in sexual relations in her car. Watts launched a campaign against the Los Angeles Police Department officers who arrested her in September (14), accusing them of racism, but audio of the incident proved the cops were just doing their job when the actress refused to hand over identification and then walked away from the scene.
She was handcuffed and brought back to her car.
Watts claimed she and her partner Brian James Lucas were just making out, but witnesses insisted she was straddling her boyfriend with her breasts exposed.
The couple faces up to six months behind bars if convicted of the crime. Watts and Lucas are due in court next month (13Nov14).

The X-Men are set to become the next comic book superheroes to head to the small screen, according to reports.
Producers at America's Fox network are said to have been discussing plans to develop a live-action TV series based on the hit Marvel Comics' mutant characters "for a while now", although an official deal has yet to be made, reports BleedingCool.com. If the rumors are true, the X-Men, co-created by Stan Lee, won't be the only comics to be brought to life on TV - The Walking Dead, Agents of SHIELD, Arrow, The Flash and Gotham are just some of the shows based on popular graphic novels.
Actress Daniele Watts is refusing to bow to pressure to apologise for accusing California police of racial profiling following a run-in with cops earlier this month (Sep14). The black Django Unchained star and her white boyfriend, celebrity chef Brian James Lucas, were detained by officers on 11 September (14) amid reports suggesting the couple had been spotted engaging in lewd conduct in their parked car in Studio City.
An angry Watts declined to hand over identification during questioning and began to walk away, prompting police to apprehend and handcuff her before taking her back to the scene of the incident.
Both she and Lucas subsequently took to their Facebook.com pages and blasted cops for reportedly targeting them because they are an interracial couple, but the police sergeant at the centre of the case, Jim Parker, has since spoken out, insisting an audio recording of the whole encounter will prove he and his fellow officers were simply investigating calls from concerned passers-by.
The developments in the case prompted a number of local civil rights activists to call on Watts to apologise for blasting the police, but she remains defiant and in a statement released late on Friday (19Sep14), she maintains her innocence, insisting she did nothing wrong.
She simply states: "It is a constitutional right that we do not have to present ID to any member of law enforcement unless we are being charged with a crime."
Authorities have launched an internal investigation in light of Watts' accusations, although the actress' publicist, Bill McCoy, reveals the couple is not planning to take further action after previously threatening to sue.

The police sergeant caught up in actress Daniele Watts' detention drama last week (11Sep14) insists a recording of his encounter with the Django Unchained star will help him prove she's making "malicious and false statements" about himself and fellow officers. Watts and her boyfriend, celebrity chef Brian James Lucas, were apprehended by police following reports suggesting the couple had been spotted indecently exposing themselves in their car in Studio City, California.
Angry Watts refused to hand over identification and began walking away. She was apprehended, handcuffed and taken back to the scene in a police car.
Lucas told TMZ.com on Monday (15Sep14) that he and Watts have hired a lawyer and plan to file a formal complaint against the officers, as Los Angeles police officials launched an internal investigation.
But now Sgt. Jim Parker has opened up about the incident, revealing he recorded what went down - and it will prove that he and his fellow officers did nothing wrong.
Sgt. Parker insists he had no intention of arresting "people having sex in the car" when he was called to the scene, adding, "No one wants to arrest anybody... She (Watts) starts making a fuss, and quite frankly I don't need to see her ID but she does have to ID herself."
The officer refused to confront Watts or chase after her as she walked away, and instead called on a nearby female cop to apprehend her.
Sgt. Parker tells The Hollywood Reporter, "I've been here before, I'm not touching her. I don't want to be accused of anything. So I requested a female officer and said, 'Hey guys, grab that female on the phone and bring her back to me'.
"I'm thinking, 'God, it's taking a long time to bring her back to me'. They said, 'She's being difficult'. They have her handcuffed, because that's what they do. It's too far to walk, so they drove her back. And I said, 'You have to give me your ID or tell me your name'. She's crying."
Watts told CNN on Monday that the LAPD officers "accosted me and forced me into handcuffs', and insisted the cops suggested she had done "something wrong by showing affection, fully clothed, in a public place".
She also accused the police of disrespecting her.
But Sgt. Parker insists his recording will prove the police officers did nothing wrong, adding, "She had no idea I was recording. So I asked her, 'Why are you in handcuffs? He's (Lucas) been here this whole time not in handcuffs. Tell me if someone has been disrespectful'.
"Police officers can record surreptitiously without consent. The other officers also had their recording on. It helps the police department. (Without it) the three of us (police officers) would be relieved of duty right now."
Los Angeles police officers detained actress Daniele Watts after receiving an emergency call reporting a couple indecently exposing themselves. The Django Unchained star and her celebrity chef partner Brian James Lucas were kissing in their car in Studio City on Thursday (11Sep14) when they were approached by cops after a resident spotted them and called police to the scene.
Lucas recalled the story on his Facebook.com page, writing that police believed Watts was a prostitute and asked the couple for identification. When an angered Watts refused and began walking away, she was apprehended, handcuffed and taken back to the scene in a police car.
Watts also took to her Facebook page after the incident, writing, "I refused to agree that I had done something wrong by showing affection, fully clothed, in a public place," and claimed the handcuffs were so tight they caused her wrists to bleed.
Watts gave her identification information to officers and they let her go, and Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officials are now trying to deal with the fallout.
A statement to The Hollywood Reporter reads, "The citizen who called the police to complain told the 9-1-1 operator that a male and a female were involved in indecent exposure inside a silver Mercedes with the vehicle door open.
"The responding sergeant and police officers located two individuals that matched the description of the suspects, and they were briefly detained. Upon further investigation it was determined that no crime had been committed. Ms. Watts and her companion were subsequently released.
"An internal complaint investigation has been initiated regarding this matter."
Lucas tells TMZ.com that he and Watts have hired a lawyer and plan to file a formal complaint against the officers.
Actress Daniele Watts has accused officers at the Los Angeles Police Department of brutality and racism after an incident on Thursday (11Sep14).
The Django Unchained star and her celebrity chef husband Brian James Lucas were kissing in a car in the San Fernando Valley, when they were approached by cops after a resident called police to the scene, according to TMZ.com. Lucas claims they believed Watts was a prostitute and asked the couple for identification. Angry Watts refused and began walking away, but she was apprehended, handcuffed and taken back to the scene in a police car.
In a message on Facebook.com, she writes, "Today I was handcuffed and detained by 2 police officers from the Studio City Police Department after refusing to agree that I had done something wrong by showing affection, fully clothed, in a public place. When the officer arrived, I was standing on the sidewalk by a tree. "I was talking to my father on my cell phone. I knew that I had done nothing wrong, that I wasn't harming anyone, so I walked away. A few minutes later, I was still talking to my dad when 2 different police officers accosted me and forced me into handcuffs..."
Watts claims the handcuffs were tight and caused her wrists to bleed. After she produced her identification she was let go, but her husband claims they have hired a lawyer and plan to file a formal complaint against the officers.
