Michael Keaton's acclaimed drama Birdman looks set to win gold at the Oscars after sweeping the board at the Independent Spirit Awards on the eve of Hollywood's biggest night. The movie scooped three prizes at the show just a day before the Academy Awards, winning Best Feature, Best Male Lead for Keaton and a cinematography honour.
Other big winners at the ceremony in Santa Barbara, California on Saturday night (21Feb15) included other Oscars favourites Boyhood, Nightcrawler and Whiplash, which all landed two awards each.
Richard Linklater won Best Director for Boyhood, while his movie's star Patricia Arquette won the Best Supporting Actress honour.
Julianne Moore was named Best Female Lead for her role in Still Alice and J.K. Simmons won in the supporting actor race for Whiplash, which also won an editing prize. Nightcrawler landed trophies for Best Screenplay and Best First Feature.
Birdman, Boyhood and Whiplash will go head-to-head for the Best Picture prize at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night (22Feb15) along with The Theory of Everything, The Imitation Game, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Selma and American Sniper.
"I was offered the role in The Butler that Oprah Winfrey played. I was also approached by Empire (producers) to be on Empire. And I was also offered the role as Richard Pryor's grandmother (in Lee Daniels' upcoming Pryor biopic). Each of those things that he offered me was taken off the table. They all just went away. But that's just part of the business, you know? I can't be upset at anybody, 'cause life is too good. It's just what it is." Oscar winner Mo'nique has lost a trio of roles in Lee Daniels projects after winning gold for her portrayal of Mary in the director's 2009 film Precious.
Birdman filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is one step closer to Oscars victory after landing the top honour at the Directors Guild Awards (DGA) on Saturday night (07Feb15). The Mexican director beat fellow awards season favourites, including Richard Linklater (Boyhood) and Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel), to claim the title of Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film at the Los Angeles ceremony.
The big win cements Inarritu's position as a frontrunner to score gold at the Academy Awards, as the DGA champ typically goes on to repeat their success at the Oscars, as Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron did last year (14) after being feted by the DGA.
Meanwhile, it was ladies' night for the victors in the TV categories - Jill Soloway was praised for her work on comedy series Transparent, Lesli Linka Glatter celebrated with the award for dramatic series for Homeland, Lisa Cholodenko's Olive Kitteridge landed her the movies for television and mini-series prize and Laura Poitras walked away with the best documentary honour for Citzenfour.
The Oscars will take place on 22 February (15), when Birdman will compete for nine awards, including Best Director, Best Actor for Michael Keaton and the coveted Best Picture.
British tycoon Sir Richard Branson helped rescue Sir Ben Ainslie when the Olympic sailing champion was left stranded at sea during a boat trip with his new bride. The British gold medallist was sailing past Branson's luxury Caribbean resort Necker Island with his new wife, TV presenter Georgie Thompson, during their honeymoon when the boat suffered a mechanical fault.
After receiving a distress signal from the couple, three of Branson's employees were sent to help and the newlyweds were brought to safety.
Branson shared the news of the dramatic rescue in a post on his blog, writing, "It was great to see Ben Ainslie sailing past Necker Island as he enjoyed his honeymoon with his delightful new wife Georgie Thompson. Seeing as Ben is one of the greatest sailors of all time, what we didn't except (expect) to see was his boat getting into trouble!... However, his boat had a serious mechanical problem, in no way Ben's fault, and he put a message out asking for help. Three of our wonderful watersports team heard the call and raced over to their aid. Together, the team helped to stop the boat from wrecking on the Moskito reef. With no harm done, Ben was able to see the funny side - after all, stranger things have happened at sea. We are now hosting him and Georgie on the island for a few days."
Thompson also took to Twitter.com to offer her thanks to Branson and his team, writing, "Worse things have happened on honeymoon... Thank you @richardbranson for rescuing @ainslieben and I..! Loved Necker."
Ainslie and Thompson were married last month (Dec14) in a ceremony at Hampton Court Palace in Surrey, England.
Director Richard Linklater's critically-acclaimed drama Boyhood will do battle with Gone Girl, The Imitation Game and American Sniper for the top prize at the American Cinema Editors' Eddie Awards. Nightcrawler and Whiplash are also shortlisted for the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) title, which has six contenders instead of the usual five this year (15) due to a tie.
Meanwhile, the feature editing, comedy or musical nominees are Birdman, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Into the Woods, Inherent Vice and Guardians of the Galaxy.
The ACE picks generally serve as good indicators for the Academy Awards - the winner of the dramatic feature editing prize has gone on to strike gold for editing at the Oscars in the past nine out of 12 years, while the victor in either the dramatic or comedy/musical categories has claimed the Best Picture Oscar seven times in the same period, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Other nominations for the Eddie Awards include Big Hero 6, The Boxtrolls and The Lego Movie for Best Edited Animated Feature Film, episodes of 24, Mad Men and Sherlock for Best Edited One-Hour Series for Commercial Television, and instalments of True Detective and House of Cards for the Non-Commercial Television category.
The winners will be unveiled on 30 January (15) during a ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California.
Lindsay Lohan celebrated her official stage debut in the West End on Thursday night (02Oct14) by showering the theatre audience with gold dust. The relieved Mean Girls star let off a party popper as she took her encore and giggled as the front rows were covered with gold confetti.
After a series of previews and mixed early reviews, the actress finally experienced opening night on the London stage, and apart from a brief moment when she forgot her lines during the second act of David Mamet's satire Speed-the-Plow, she was largely a hit.
Lohan plays the role of secretary Karen in the play, a role that was originated by Madonna on Broadway in 1988.
West Wing star Richard Schiff and stage veteran Nigel Lindsay also feature in the play at the Playhouse Theatre.
After Thursday's opening night, The Stage's critic Mark Shenton wrote, "There are really qualified actors to play this part and she's not qualified. She was so out of her league. We are talking about the wrong Lindsay here. It's Nigel Lindsay we should be talking about. He is a serious actor."
The show runs until 29 November (14).
You’d be surprised to find out how many actors work together multiple times. There are so many people in Hollywood and even more trying to break onto the scene, but these actors just love working together multiple times.
For the sake of not listing every Adam Sandler movie ever (that guy does movies with the same 5 people) or creating a Matt Damon/Ben Affleck bro-list, this list is strictly a man and a woman who have worked together. In most cases, the man and woman have always played love interests, or at least good friends (or co-crime fighters who protect the Earth from Aliens and HYDRA).

Over 185 films from more than 65 countries will be screened at the festival, including Jean Luc-Godard's Cannes winner Goodbye To Language, Richard Linklater's Boyhood, Mike Leigh's Mr. Turner, and Brad Pitt's new movie Fury.
The event's India Gold Jury president will be Serbian director Goran Paskaljevic.
Sir Cliff Richard has turned down a Portuguese honour in the wake of a sex scandal back in his native England. The singer, who owns property in Portugal, was to be presented with the keys to his adopted city of Albufeira, but he has chosen not to accept the honour, following his denial of a sex offence.
Earlier this month (Aug14), his home in Berkshire was raided by police officers following allegations Richard sexually assaulted a boy under the age of 16 in 1985.
Denying the claims, Richard said, "For many months I have been aware of allegations against me of historic impropriety which have been circulating online. The allegations are completely false. Up until now I have chosen not to dignify the false allegations with a response, as it would just give them more oxygen."
The singer was due to be awarded the Freedom of Albufeira on Wednesday (20Aug15), but did not attend the ceremony.
The city mayor Carlos Silva e Sousa told the Daily Telegraph, "Cliff was invited to receive the gold key of the city because he is a distinguished member of Albufeira. It's a big honour. We are recognising big politicians and figures in civil society. He's not here today because it was his choice.
"It doesn't change my opinion of him. We are very proud of him, he is a big man. He is a very good man and we keep that opinion... I hope to give him the award at some point."
The news comes a day after Richard's publicist revealed the singer would not be returning to Britain from Portugal for a concert at Canterbury Cathedral next month (Sep14).
Actor John Krasinski treated co-star Anna Kendrick to a special surprise by organising an impromptu trip to Elvis Presley's Graceland estate on her birthday. The former The Office star is currently directing and co-starring in a new film called The Hollars with Kendrick, who plays her pregnant girlfriend in the drama.
When Krasinski discovered the actress turned 29 on Saturday (09Aug14), he decided to take a break from filming in Mississippi and headed to Memphis, Tennessee to Presley's former mansion.
The Pitch Perfect star took to Instagram.com on her birthday and posted a photo of herself in front of the rock 'n' roll legend's iconic home, adding the caption, "Krasinski found out it was my birthday and organized a trip to Graceland. #WorldsBestBoss #References"
Kendrick also shared a picture in front of Presley's signature white and gold jumpsuit, while she attempted to do her best lip curl impression.
While The Hollars, which also features Richard Jenkins, Margo Martindale and Josh Groban, marks the first collaboration between Kendrick and Krasinski, the actress also stars alongside his wife, Emily Blunt, in the upcoming movie musical, Into the Woods.
