Killer Joe opens this weekend and if you think you’re being dragged to yet another gory slasher flick, or you’re hoping to see Matthew McConaughey star in a white-trash version of Magic Mike, please hear my warning: you couldn’t be more wrong.
When 22-year-old Chris (Emile Hirsch) finds himself in debt to a drug lord, his brilliant money-making solution is to find someone to kill his mother, so he can collect her hefty $50,000 life insurance policy. Enter McConaughey as Joe Cooper, a cringe-worthy Dallas Detective who also moonlights as a pricey hit man. After learning that “Killer Joe’s” fee is 25K in advance, Chris offers up his virgin little sister Dottie (Juno Temple) as a placeholder, and is later appalled at the strong bond the two outcasts have formed.
Killer Joe boasts an NC-17 rating, but it is extremely difficult to place the film into a specific genre. The brutal and extremely vivid fight scenes will make your stomach churn and instantly throw the film into the drama/horror bin. However, the blunt dialogue and trailer park etiquette provoke chuckles that have one instantly questioning whether or not you should have actually laughed at that, i.e. an awkward comedy.
“The film is very deliberately and cheerfully amoral,” says Matthew McConaughey at a roundtable interview in Los Angeles. After starring in this summer’s sexiest stripper blockbuster, many reporters in the room were baffled to see McConaughey take on such an intensely twisted character. Surprisingly, the newlywed actor had a similar reaction to Killer Joe after his first glimpse at the script.
“In my first read I was disgusted. I remember throwing it in the trash and going and taking a shower and wishing I had a steal brush.” The Magic Mike actor reveals, “I gave it two days and let it get out of my system and I read it again and I found myself sort of starting to chuckle and then a few laughs and then I started to really see the hilarity in it.”
Emile Hirsch echoed McConaughey’s mixed reactions to the film, “There was definitely a side of me that kind of took glee in the kind of craziness of it. As soon as I realized that there was a comedic element, I was able to like it.” Hirsh continues, “It definitely made me cringe… I mean you’re reading this thinking it’s this really straight-forward drama and then there’s this chicken bone scene where I’m like ‘Well that’s so weird for a drama to have, that’s so odd.’”
This “chicken bone scene” that Hirsh is referring to is one of the final and most horrifyingly uncomfortable scenes in the movie. Don't worry, no spoilers, but prepare to have a newfound disgust towards fried chicken that will take a couple of weeks in the fetal position and a restraining order against Colonel Sanders to get over.
Did the actors share the poultry nightmares? McConaughey seems to have a stronger stomach. “I’m more of a fan now.” While Hirsch had a more appropriate reaction saying, “I’m a big fan of K Fried C, but there may [need to] be a rehabilitation program to get me back on the chicken.”
Chicken woes aside, this film has such a provocative and unique plot that whether or not you hate it or love it, one thing is for sure: you’re definitely going to remember it. McConaughey concludes, “I thought it was going to be a 50/50 split with some people just abhorred and some people going ‘It’s a riot I love it!’ But I’ve noticed that 90 percent are abhorred and love it and going ‘Oh my god what the eff was that?!’”
It seems like Killer Joe’s publicity team already knew that audiences would have difficulty digesting and explaining this flick, so they came up with this gem of a description: “A totally twisted deep-fried, Texas redneck trailer park murder story.” Yeah, that just about sums it up perfectly.
Killer Joe hits select theaters this Friday, July 27.

Matthew McConaughey Gets NC-17 for Twisted 'Killer Joe'

Matthew McConaughey Takes On 'Killer Joe'
Actor Matthew Mcconaughey gifted wedding guests at his recent nuptials with personalised beer holders. They were inscribed with the date of the ceremony and featured a map of Texas - the Magic Mike star's home state. McConaughey wed Brazilian model and designer Camila Alves last month (JUn12).
In general, Hollywood celebs tend to look absolutely stunning regardless of what they wear. Let's face it, Jennifer Lopez could wear a paper bag and still look like runway material. But when it comes to rocking out baby bump attire, some stars excel way more than others. Camila Alves (who just became Mrs. Matthew McConaughey) just debuted her ever-growing belly at the Magic Mike London premiere on Tuesday evening, and she still manages to look fabulous. Sporting a leopard-print strapless dress and ruby red lipstick, this model always seems ready for a close-up.
Other stars, however, just aren't as lucky when it comes to wearing animal print garb while they are pregnant. Check out Snooki, Matt Damon's wife Luciana Barroso, Jessica Simpson, and Beyoncé's pregnant displays of leopard (and snakeskin). Some of these women look great, but the others should have questioned their outfits before they walked out the door.

Pals offered to hire strippers for a wild celebration in the groom's honour but McConaughey wanted to take it easy in the run-up to his big day on 9 June (12), when he exchanged vows with the Brazilian beauty at his ranch in Texas.
He tells Britain's Daily Mirror, "I had some friends who wanted me to have a bachelor party. But I said, 'What am I going to do at a bachelor party? Watch you guys have fun and then foot the bill?'... I've definitely grown, because when you have a family there's more to live for."
The couple became engaged last December (11) and the actor admits it was his wife who coerced him into planning the ceremony once they set a date.
He adds, "She handed me an invitation to my own wedding. That's one way to kick-start a man!"
Matthew Mcconaughey had a surprise visitor while shooting Magic Mike - his wife Camila Alves sneaked onto the set to watch his stripping scenes.
Brazilian beauty Alves, who McConaughey married last month (Jun12), was secretly looking on as the Texan hunk peeled off his clothes and paraded around onstage in skimpy underwear to play strip club owner Dallas in the hit movie.
McConaughey admits it was for the best he was unaware of Alves' presence as he was terrified about performing his raunchy dance routine.
He tells Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper, "I didn't know she was there. She had sneaked in at the back and I'm glad I didn't know because I would have been even more nervous than I was. But I got it done and she enjoyed it. She gave me the thumbs-up.
"It was nerve-racking to dance in front of everyone live. Then having to strip down was even more nerve-racking. The biggest challenge wasn't the dancing, it was the tiny thong. It's a huge leap of faith to trust a thong and it's your only protection up on stage. When I first tried it on, I was trying to get myself into every position possible to see if enough of me was covered."
Matthew Mcconaughey is preparing to welcome another baby into his brood - his new wife Camila Alves is expecting the couple's third child.
The Magic Mike hunk and the Brazilian beauty walked down the aisle together last month (Jun12), and it's now emerged the blushing bride was hiding a small baby bump under her wedding dress.
Announcing the happy news on America's Independence Day (04Jul12), McConaughey took to his Twitter.com page to write, "happy birthday America, more good news, Camila and I are expecting our 3rd child, God bless, just keep livin."
Before their wedding, Alves revealed that they had decided to exchange vows for the sake of their kids - son Levi, three, and daughter Vida, two - so that the whole family shared the same last name.
She said, "I think it's great for the kids. Levi actually understands what it means now that Mama's going to have the same last name as they have, so that's neat."
Someone was trying to steal America's thunder. About a month after Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves tied the knot, the couple announced over Twitter July 4 that they are expecting their third baby.
"happy birthday America, more good news, Camila and I are expecting our 3rd child, God bless, just keep livin" the 42-year-old Magic Mike star wrote. Alves, 29, shared the same message with her followers.
Baby No. 3 will join the couple's daughter Vida, 2, and son Levi, 4.

Matthew McConaughey Ties the Knot with Camila Alves
The Magic Mike star exchanged vows with the Brazilian beauty last month (Jun12) at their home in Austin, Texas, and now Alves is ready to get back to work - she will front a new campaign for the department store's private label, I.N.C.
A spokesperson for the retailer tells WWD.com, "Camila has a beautiful, multi-ethnic appearance that will appeal to a diverse customer base. She's on the red carpet, but she's also a mother. It's an incredible package that will deliver star power to our star brand at Macy's."
When you think of the upcoming movie, Magic Mike, which features Matthew McConaughey, Channing Tatum, and Joe Manganiello as male strippers, you would think being on the edge of 100% nudity most of the time would be the intimidating part (for them, not us).
But it turns out they were less fearful of stripping down, and more afraid of having to dance while doing it. And by "it" we mean strip. Get your minds out of the gutter!
McConaughey — who just wed his longtime girlfriend, where he apparently skipped the tradition of a first dance — admitted before doing this movie, "I'd never danced." A big part of pre-shoot prep had all three guys learning choreographed routines to go along with their stripteases. But according to McConaughey, when it came time to shoot his dance scenes he felt like "there will never be enough time. I could rehearse this thing for 10 years."
Even ex-stripper Tatum (whose real-life story is the inspiration behind the movie) was not looking forward to reliving his past. "I'm about to go on stage and dance for the first time, and I'm like, 'Why did I want to do this again? This is completely not what I remembered.' I was terrified."
True Blood's Manganiello — who is also no stranger to taking his shirt off, and was hesitant to take another role that involved doing just that — equates his stripping scenes to the feeling of "coming out of a blackout. You get up there, you do this thing, and then it was like waking up the next morning covered in blood having no recollection of what the hell you just did. You're sitting backstage after your routine, in a thong, sweating, the music is over, you're just sitting there alone in silence ... going, 'What did I just do? People are going to see this!"
Yep. And if he's lucky, lots and lots of people.

Matthew Mcconaughey has sent his new wedding band back to the jewellers to have it engraved with "something special".
The actor wed Brazilian beauty Camila Alves at their ranch in Texas earlier this month (Jun12) and already he has been spotted out and about without the ring - but he insists it's not because he is having second thoughts about being a married man.
He explains, "The ring is getting something done to it, just a little extra thing that we wanted to add after the wedding."
