Residents in the Bronx, New York are urging local officials to cancel an upcoming Jennifer Lopez concert amid concerns the superstar's homecoming show will cause big traffic problems in the surrounding neighbourhoods. The Jenny from the Block hitmaker is set to head home to headline a free gig in Pelham Bay Park on Wednesday (04Jun14), but a number of locals in City Island, a town which borders the park, are already upset by the impending chaos the gig will cause.
Members of the City Island Civic Association and its president, Bill Stanton, have penned a letter to both the Parks Commissioner and New York Police Department Commissioner to urge them to axe the concert so as to not overwhelm the neighbourhood of City Island.
In the letter, obtained by the New York Daily News, they state, "We write to you today on behalf of our small community of 4,500 residents... located next to Pelham Bay Park... the selected site for a free Jennifer Lopez concert for 25,000 visitors on June 4...
"To our knowledge, none of our elected officials or even our local community board had been consulted... They would have surely informed you that our small community sits immediately off of this venue and relies on the roadways within Pelham Bay Park to enter and exit our neighborhood."
Stanton goes on to state that a previous appearance by Lopez in Pelham Bay Park led to "illegal parking, tons of litter and standstill traffic on roads leading to City Island," adding that they are "nervous of a similar ordeal repeating itself".
The letter continues, "In our opinion this is grossly unfair, and steps must be taken to rectify this situation."
The members of the association are requesting for a special traffic lane designated for City Island residents to get home easily.
Lopez has yet to comment on the matter.
Jennifer Lopez has invited one of her favourite American Idol contestants to join her on tour as a back-up singer. Pia Toscano was voted off the 10th season of the talent show, but has remained close to her mentor Lopez ever since. Hours after she joined the superstar and fellow Idol stars Jessica Sanchez and Allison Iraheta for a performance on the most recent 13th season of the show, she was offered the chance to tour with the Jenny From the Block hitmaker.
Toscano will embark on a six-date trek with Lopez on Friday (30May14). The young star tells The Hollywood Reporter, "I have to pinch myself a little bit that I am in the same room with her now... Originally it was just two (shows), and now it's six."
She believes touring with Lopez will set her up for her own career: "Jennifer is really loyal and welcoming and such a good mentor. I feel like she has almost taken me under her wing a little bit and has given me an incredible opportunity where I can now watch her work and see what it takes."
Donnie Wahlberg recruited Jenny Mccarthy's young son to help with his marriage proposal. The couple became engaged last month (Apr14), and the model/TV personality has now revealed the New Kids On The Block star teamed up with 12-year-old Evan to plan the moment he popped the question.
Wahlberg even encouraged Evan to be a part of his mother's big moment.
McCarthy tells America's Shape magazine, "His proposal was so sweet. One afternoon, my son walked into the living room with a piece of paper that read, 'Will.' He ran out, then he came back with another piece that said, 'You.' Then he came back with another piece that read, 'Marry.' Then Donnie walked in wearing a T-shirt that said, 'Me?'... He was carrying the ring, he got down on his knee in front of Evan, and I said yes."
A British showbiz reporter turned his access to A-list movie stars into a breathtaking tribute video for his new bride on their wedding day at the weekend (17May14). Sky News entertainment reporter Joe Michalczuk asked stars like Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Samuel L. Jackson and Anne Hathaway to salute his bride-to-be and he unveiled the short film when the couple exchanged vows recently.
Two of the best messages came from Hathaway and Winslet, who used film songs and lines to pay tribute to the new Mrs. Jenny Michalczuk.
Les Miserables star Hathaway said, "Jenny, I dreamed a dream you'd marry Joe," while Titanic's Winslet opened her arms and asked, "Jenny, do you feel like you're flying?"
And Jackman was thrilled to hear the bride was a fellow Australian, joking, "Jenny, you left all of those Australian men for... this. It's not too late."
The video went viral on Monday (19May14) while the newlyweds were honeymooning.
Singer Jenny Lewis has credited the recording of her new album with pulling her through "one of the most difficult periods" of her life, after suffering a meltdown following the break-up of her cult band Rilo Kiley and the death of her estranged father. The star recruited rocker Ryan Adams and his musician pal Mike Viola to help her complete The Voyager, her first solo album in six years, and she admits channelling her pain and emotions into her songs proved to be the therapy she desperately needed.
She tells RollingStone.com, "Making The Voyager got me through one of the most difficult periods of my life.
"After Rilo Kiley broke up and a few really intense personal things happened, I completely melted down. It nearly destroyed me. I had such severe insomnia that, at one point, I didn't sleep for five straight nights. Many of the songs on The Voyager came out of the need to occupy my mind in the moments when I just couldn't shut down...
"This record was the hardest one I ever made. The Voyager tells that story: the longest night of my life and the journey to finally getting some rest."
Lewis lost her dad at the end of 2010 and disbanded Rilo Kiley the following year (11).
Michael Douglas, Oprah Winfrey and former U.S. First Lady Hillary Clinton helped veteran U.S. newswoman Barbara Walters celebrate her TV retirement on Friday (16May14) by making surprise appearances on her longrunning daytime show The View. The 84 year old's final episode as co-host of the talk show aired on Friday and Douglas, Winfrey and Clinton were among the guests who turned out to wish her well after a career spanning over five decades.
Joining Walters and co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Jenny McCarthy and Sherri Shepherd at the top of the show, former U.S. Secretary of State Clinton said, "I can't believe this day has come, and I can't believe it's for real."
Actor Douglas then reunited with his old pal to reminisce about their longtime friendship and gushed to Walters, "You're an extraordinary person, inside and out. You have the warmest heart, you are the most generous person I have ever seen, you give the greatest parties and I love you, I really do."
Media mogul Winfrey also appeared on air to heap praise on Walters, who became America's first female co-anchor of a network news programme in the 1970s, explaining, "You're the reason I wanted to be in television. You shattered the glass ceiling for so many women."
Winfrey went on to introduce a slew of female TV newscasters to the show to salute Walters, including Diane Sawyer, Arnold Schwarzenegger's estranged wife Maria Shriver, Katie Couric and Robin Roberts.
Walters, also known for her Most Fascinating People TV interview specials, won't be retiring completely - she plans to continue working as a producer of The View, the panel talk show she launched 17 years ago.
Stars including Alec Baldwin, Jenny Mccarthy and Donnie Wahlberg, actress Chloe Bennet and Scandal's Katie Lowes were among the guests who turned out to celebrate retiring TV newswoman Barbara Walters at a special bash in New York City on Wednesday night (14May14).
Harry Connick, Jr. has confirmed he'll be returning as an American Idol judge.

Appearing on U.S. morning show Live! With Kelly and Michael on Wednesday (14May14), he said, "I'll be back," when quizzed about his plans for Idol.
"I was anxious for you to meet my mother - specifically because she's disapproved of almost every girl I've ever dated. She's the ultimate B.S. (bulls**t) detector. But you know what? She loves her." Singer/actor Donnie Wahlberg received the ultimate stamp of approval for his new fiancee, actress/model Jenny Mccarthy, from his mum Alma. The couple became engaged last month (Apr14) after nearly a year of dating.
