Reggae singer John Holt has died at the age of 69. The veteran musician's agent confirmed he passed away in a London hospital on Sunday (19Sep14).
The representative tells the Jamaica Observer newspaper, "John died at 2:40 am English time. His nephew informed of his death."
Holt rose to fame in the 1960s as a member of ska group The Paragons during which time he wrote his signature song The Tide is High, which became an international hit when it was covered by Blondie in the 1980s.
In 1970, Holt left the group to launch a solo career and became a renowned name in reggae after his song Stick By Me became Jamaica's biggest-selling hit in 1972.
