Though we can’t fault Laika for returning time and time again to the “misfit children” well, we’re beginning to worry if the studio isn’t dipping its bucket deep enough. Though it turned in two past entries worth remembering — Coraline was good, but just shy of great; ParaNorman was great, but just shy of excellent — and repeats this achievement with The Boxtrolls, its latest is perhaps the boldest evidence of Laika’s limiting trepidation.
The film actually turns the “misfit” gambit on its head, introducing a character who fits in so perfectly with his friends and family — a race of friendly subterranean hoarder goblins — that years pass before he realizes he’s not actually one of them. Eggs (Isaac Hempstead-Wright), so named for the box that guards his unseemly torso, is a young boy raised by the sweet and creative (but ultimately cowardice) Boxtroll family that lives below the misguided aristocracy of Cheesebridge, a town decidedly phobic of its underground neighbors. Led by a comically menacing vagabond with aspirations for glory (played with flair by Ben Kingsley), the Cheesebridgers agree to rid their streets and lives of the vile little creatures forever.
A few steps beyond the average 101 Dalmations rip-off, The Boxtrolls actually puts a great deal of energy into exploring the blurry dichotomy of good vs. evil, turning would-be mindless henchmen Trout and Pickles (Nick Frost and Richard Ayoade) into well-meaning patriots led astray by propaganda. But it doesn’t get too heady — Frost and (especially) Ayoade provide the biggest and most consistent laughs of the film. To their credit, Boxtrolls might be the funniest thing Laika has produced yet. The film, whose cast also includes a plucky and petulant Elle Fanning, a snooty and oblivious Jared Harris, and a thickheaded and maniacal Tracy Morgan, is eager to get especially wacky when it plays with the weird worlds of Boxtrolls and cheese-obsessed noblemen. But it’s just too darn afraid to get emotional.
The Boxtrolls barely scratches the surface of its characters’ relationships, which is particularly destructive to a story about family, understanding, and bravery. Instead of watching young Eggs’ relationship with his surrogate father Fish (a babbling Dee Bradley Baker) evolve, we hear prototypical speeches about being yourself, standing up for what’s right, and a few more all-purpose themes. The Boxtrolls’ goofiness is grade A, but it cuts through the hints of biting emotional material, rendering the ordeal about half as affective as it might have been. Drop your bucket deeper next time, Laika. You're so close to that masterpiece...

Gwyneth Paltrow has given her baking skills a boost by taking private lessons with top chef Zoe Loeb. The actress jumped at the chance to work with her longtime friend Josh Loeb's wife when she heard the "serious baker" was working on a book based around the recipes for dishes she serves at her Huckleberry Cafe in California.
Detailing the first of many hook-ups with Zoe in her new goop.com newsletter, Paltrow, who has penned her own cookbooks, writes, "When I heard Zoe had compiled the sweet and savory breakfasts from Huckleberry into a book, I leapt at the chance for a baking lesson with her (I am a good cook, and a s**t baker).
"These recipes are gorgeous, and the techniques were not hard to pick up. I’ve even made scones on my own since then. Take that."
Former Doctor Who star Colin Baker has paid tribute to writer Jane Baker following her death on Monday (08Sep14). The author was best known for her contributions to the hit BBC sci-fi series, and she penned numerous scripts for the show with her husband Philip 'Pip' Baker under the moniker 'Pip and Jane'.
She passed away on Monday (08Sept14), and now former Time Lord Colin Baker - no relation to the writer - has paid tribute to her in a touching post on Twitter.com.
He writes, "So very very sad to learn that Jane Baker of Pip and Jane fame - Doctor Who writers from my era - has died. My thoughts are with Pip."
British actor and comedian James Corden is preparing to relocate to America after officially landing the role as the new host of TV's The Late Late Show. The Begin Again star will take over from fellow Brit Craig Ferguson, who will depart the programme after nine years as host in December (14).
Monday's (08Sep14) announcement from CBS network bosses comes a month after reports initially surfaced revealing Corden was the frontrunner for the job, and the 36 year old can't believe his luck.
A statement released by Corden reads: "I can't describe how thrilled and honoured I am to be taking over from the brilliant Craig Ferguson.
"To be asked to host such a prestigious show on America's No. 1 (sic) network is hugely exciting. I can't wait to get started, and will do my very best to make a show America will enjoy."
Corden is no stranger to U.S. audiences - he won a Tony Award in 2012 for his star turn in Broadway show One Man, Two Guvnors, while he also appeared in the 2006 film adaptation of The History Boys, and landed a role alongside Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo in comedy drama Begin Again, which was released earlier this year (14).
He is also set to hit the big screen as The Baker in the highly-anticipated Into the Woods movie musical, which will hit theatres in the U.S. at Christmas (25Dec14), and American cinema audiences will also be able to see him as Britain's Got Talent winner Paul Potts when hit 2013 biopic One Chance is released this autumn (14).
America's The Late Late Show airs Monday to Friday after The Late Show With David Letterman.

Actor Dax Shepard is set to direct and star in a movie adaptation of beloved U.S. cop show CHiPS. Reports suggest the When in Rome star will portray Larry Wilcox's character Officer Jon Baker in the project, while Michael Pena will take on Erik Estrada's traffic cop character Frank Poncherello.
Wilmer Valderrama also tried to get a similar project off the ground with Warner Bros., but the idea fell flat.
Shepard is also writing the script for the revamp.
Mark Wahlberg confirmed reports his brother Donnie and actress/model Jenny Mccarthy wed in Chicago, Illinois on Sunday (31Aug14) by tweeting his congratulations.
The couple teased the media in July (14) when announcing plans to wed in McCarthy's hometown of Chicago on 15 August, but reports suggest the nuptials took place in suburb St. Charles over the weekend - and groom Wahlberg's movie star brother was a no-show. He may have missed the wedding, but Mark made an effort to congratulate his brother on his big day, tweeting, "Congratulations@DonnieWahlberg and @JennyMcCarthy, so happy for you both today."
The actor, his wife Rhea Durham and their kids also filmed an Instagram video congratulating the newlyweds and posted it online, revealing they were celebrating daughter Ella's 11th birthday in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile in St. Charles, McCarthy's former The View co-star Sherri Shepherd was on hand for the ceremony at the Hotel Baker, as well as Wahlberg's New Kids on the Block bandmates Jordan Knight and Danny Wood, according to local newspaper The Courier-News.
The wedding is the second for both stars - Wahlberg has two sons from his nine-year marriage to Kim Fey, which ended in divorce in 2008, and McCarthy shares a son, Evan, with her ex John Asher. They divorced in 2005.
Monday night (yes, Monday) was the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on NBC and millions tuned in. Late Night host Seth Meyers gracefully took on the task of hosting. While the show might have been way too long, we found quite a few enjoyable moments that made us laugh, smile, and cry.
Seth Meyer’s Opening Monologue
Hosting any awards show is tough, but Seth held his own. He didn’t need a musical number, or heavy gag-jokes, to win over the audience. Seth was his usual charming self, with great delivery when it came to a friendly jab, or two.
Beyonce Showed Up
Oh you didn’t know, Queen Bey graced our screens last night? Amy Poehler AKA Beyonce, is half the reason we even tune into these awards shows. She’s either hosting, presenting, or just being fabulous, and that’s alright by us.
Jimmy Kimmel’s Matthew McConaughey Jokes
“Matthew McConaughey doesn't even own a television. I happen to know for a fact that he traded his television for a conch shell full of weed.”
The "Billy On The Street" Skit Was Surprisingly Good
"He's the host of the #Emmys this year!" "Um, Seth Macfarlane?" Haha.
— Yes/No Films (@yesnofilms) August 26, 2014
Usually, we're not too crazy about Billy On The Street, but his pre-taped skit with the Emmys' host, asking people on the street questions about the Emmys, was pretty hysterical.
Bryan Cranston’s Mustache

This Epic Makeout Sesh
Louis C.K.’s Simple, But Sweet Acceptance Speech
Nothing long-winded, just straight to the point, yet sweet. He also made sure to point out that Sarah Baker was the star and reason he won.

Liam Payne is having some fun on Twitter. Depending on his mood (or fangirl status) he changes his official Twitter name. Which makes us wonder: does anyone really know Liam? Better yet, who will he be next?
The original name:
On a normal day, he’s just Liam Payne (the hugely successful, talented, mega pop-star-slash-leader of One Direction).
The second name - Mrs. Horan:
Last week, Liam let his inner fangirl out for the whole world to see. Apparently, no one is a bigger "Niall Girl" than Liam. I’d argue him on that, but instead I’m just going to laugh at these tweets.
OHHHH MY GODDDD I GOT A SELFIEEEEEEEE pic.twitter.com/JvuvDs2Zfw

Niall is suchhhh a baeee pic.twitter.com/TsIKfllj9v
— the man in black (@Real_Liam_Payne) August 4, 2014
The third name - Liam Payne The Baker:
After a quick stop into Cake Boss in Hoboken, NJ, Liam became a certified baker. Not sure how much time he has to dedicate to his baking, since he’s on a world tour right now, but I’d love to see what he can make.
Liam's Twitter fans noticed the change as well and started questioning things:
"@Real_Liam_Payne: I am the real Liam Payne" no, you're the baker

— HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOE (@movewithzarry) August 10, 2014
The fourth name - The Man In Black:
This new change has people guessing if we’ll ever know Liam’s true identity:
Honestly I don't even know who the @Real_Liam_Payne is anymore. From "Mrs. Horan" & now "The Man in Black" ??? I'm confused as ever.
