We've been clamoring for a female superhero film for years now. Principal focus in this call to arms has been on Disney and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the purveyors of the best superhero flicks on the lot, and Warner Bros/DC Comics, what with Wonder Woman on their roster. But we've overlooked Sony, the company that lays claim to the Marvel property Spider-Man. As it turns out, per Deadline, the Amazing Spider-Man films might spawn the next female-centric superhero movie... but we're wondering if this will be a project worthy of that superlative.
Back in the early aughts, Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 set the bar high for superhero cinema. After the much maligned third chapter in Sam Raimi's Peter Parker series, fans diverted attention to the Avengers pictures and Christopher Nolan's Batman films, hoping to find all their comic book wishes met within said parameters. Then came Amazing Spider-Man and Amazing Spider-Man 2... which more or less validated this specified cynicism, turning over middling reviews and no small sum of fan backlash. But Marc Webb's features aren't devoid of charm. The shining light in both movies, in fact, is the sort of character that usually gets shafted, and big time: the "girlfriend."
Emma Stone plays Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker's (Andrew Garfield) friend and young love, with far more moxy and character than are usually attributed to women in superhero films. Although we get venerable players like Natalie Portman and Liv Tyler playing the ladyfriends of Marvel heroes, agency is a palpable absentee; Gwyneth Paltrow, the strongest of the lot as Pepper Potts, only really conjured up some vigor for the third Iron Man movie. And female superhero Scarlett Johansson still hasn't gotten her long overdue starring feature.

While the DC side of the game is notably lacking in the same kind of pizzazz on the whole, its women can be noted as especially bland. Lois Lane, both versions of Rachel Dawes, and even Anne Hathaway's Selina Kyle are particularly dull characters who function primarily as appendages of their respective heroes... even if one of 'em did run down an asthmatic Tom Hardy.
And yet Sony, perpretating movies that are altogether less impressively crafted than those of its competitors, gives us an interesting, courageous, and likable character in Stone's Gwen Stacy. She's funnier, smarter, braver, and more reasonable than her counterpart Peter, a rarity for a genre of film that prefers to use women as damsels in distress and set dressing. Beyond just being a more vivid presence in these films, Stacy actually contributes to both the plot — she is the most important factor in any one of Peter's actions and decisions — as well as the ultimate takedown of the central villain. In the end, she's more of a sidekick, a hero in her own right, than a girlfriend figure.
We don't know what sort of character Sony will put forth with its undisclosed superheroine film, but we're glad that they're the ones taking this step forward. But this isn't a free pass to further put off a Black Widow movie, Kevin Feige. Everyone needs to get in on this action!

Australian singer/actress Natalie Imbruglia is considering signing up for Internet dating as she is struggling to find a man.
The Torn hitmaker split from Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns in 2008 after five years of marriage, and has since been linked to stars including Friends actor David Schwimmer and Kings of Leon drummer Nathan Followill.
However, Imbruglia admits she has now been single for a long time and she is turning to online dating websites in a bid to find love.
She tells KIIS 1065's The Kyle and Jackie O Show, "(My love life is) shocking! I'm so single... I don't know (why)... I just want to meet (someone normal)... I'm starting to consider that I should go on (dating app) Tinder... Well where am I going to meet people?... My girlfriend in London has fallen madly in love on her third Tinder date and I'm incredibly jealous. And he's a really nice normal guy, a director... I've met him, he's really sweet and really normal... Everyone I know who is single is on Tinder in London."
When the presenters informed the star that most people who use the app are just looking for one-night stands, Imbruglia replies, "No! Is that what it is? Now I'm regretting bringing this up on the radio!... Ok you've turned me off now."

Cameron Diaz ranted at an Australian radio host and ended the interview early after the presenter made comments about her friend Drew Barrymore's past drug problems.
The Hollywood actress and her Sex Tape co-star Jason Segel were guests on Australian radio station KIIS 1065's The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Monday (21Jul14) to promote their new movie.
However, the interview took a turn for the worse when host Kyle Sandilands brought up Diaz's Charlie's Angels co-star Barrymore, and mentioned that she had suffered drug addiction in the past.
The comments prompted an angry outburst from Diaz, who ranted at the host, "I'm sure you've never been through it... I'm sure Kyle, you've never been through a drug phase or alcoholism (or) anything like that... pretty clean, always get it right."
After letting Segel answer the next question, Diaz cut back into the conversation to cut the interview short, concluding, "We're having to go now, sorry. They're wrapping us up."
After the interview concluded, Sandilands' co-host Jackie O scolded the star for upsetting their interviewee by bringing up Barrymore's issues and mentioning Diaz's rumoured boyfriend Benji Madden, saying, "Good one Kyle... You ruined that interview. The two things that would have got her off-side, you went there."
British pop star Lily Allen often plants fake information with her pals to find out if they are leaking stories about her life. The Smile singer was left furious when an invitation to her 2011 wedding emerged in public, giving away the date and location of the ceremony, and she vowed to track down the culprit.
Allen has revealed she now regularly tests members of her inner circle by giving away juicy titbits of fake information to see if it later turns up online.
She tells The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Australian radio station KIIS 1065, "Yeah many, many people (have leaked stories about me). When I have a suspicion, I just plant a story that's not true just with that one person and if it surfaces, then I know it's them and they are no longer in phone book."
Disgraced sportsman-turned-movie star O.J. Simpson was movie bosses' first choice to play the Terminator in director James Cameron's 1984 sci-fi blockbuster. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the film as part of an Entertainment Weekly feature, executive Mike Medavoy admits he wanted Simpson to front the film, with Arnold Schwarzenegger as the movie's hero.
Schwarzenegger eventually landed the Terminator role and Michael Biehn was cast as hero Kyle Reese.
Medavoy recalls, "At the time, O.J. Simpson had one of those commercials for Hertz where he jumped over a counter and ran to get a rental car. It was all of that athletic stuff, which I thought the Terminator should have."
But Cameron was far from sold on the idea.
He says, "This was when everybody loved him... He (Simpson) was this likeable, goofy, kind of innocent guy... (but) I wasn't interested in an African-American man chasing around a white girl with a knife."
A decade after the film came out, Simpson's role as a likeable celebrity turned upside down after he was accused of killing his wife and her friend in a jealous rage. Simpson was acquitted of the crime.
He is currently serving time behind bars for his part in an armed raid on a memorabilia dealer's Las Vegas hotel room.
British singer Lily Allen plucked up the courage to approach Kanye West at a fashion event in New York in May (14) to make peace with him over her Sheezus album title. The pop star named her latest record after West's 2013 offering Yeezus, and she feared the rapper would be angry with her when he found out.
Allen spent months fretting about his reaction, and was relieved when she finally got the chance to meet him at the recent Met Gala in New York City.
The Smile star tells The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Australian radio station KIIS 1065, "He was (good about it). I think when you're in the public eye, you know how things get misinterpreted. When I saw him (I wanted) just to let him know that there was nothing underhand going on and it was all very positive and it was a sign of respect rather than anything else and he responded to that."
Actor Chace Crawford is single again after splitting from his girlfriend.
The Gossip Girl star has been dating model Rachelle Goulding since early last year (13), but Crawford has now confirmed the romance is over.
During an appearance on The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Australian radio station KIIS 1065 on Wednesday (16Jul14), Crawford was asked whether he is still dating "that Canadian model... the hot chick," and he replied, "Ah, no. I'm not. I'm not... It's totally good. It's totally good. You have fun."
When pressed about the breakup, the star blamed the split on moving from New York to Los Angeles, explaining, "I actually moved out of New York, I live in L.A. now," and he is embracing single life as he settles into California, adding, "I am travelling too much right now (for a relationship). I am just trying to move in and I have a couple of independent films (I am working on) right now."
