Cult TV series Veronica Mars was given the top prize at the inaugural mtvU Fandom Awards on Thursday (24Jul14). The teen detective drama was given new life last year (13) after fans donated $5.7 million (£3.5 million) via a Kickstarter.com campaign to reunite the cast for a feature film, seven years after the show was abruptly cancelled.
The Veronica Mars movie was released in March (14), and fans of the series have continued supporting the franchise by voting for the show in the first-ever mtvU prizegiving, beating out 31 nominees, including The Hunger Games, The Hobbit, Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad for Fandom of the Year.
Also taking home trophies were Game of Thrones for OMG Moment of the Year for the Purple Wedding episode, Harry Potter for Best Fandom Forever, TV series Hannibal for Breakout Fandom of the Year, and The Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev for Ship of the Year (Favourite onscreen relationship).
Special prizes also went to Teen Wolf for Fandom Feat of the Year, as the programme's fans raised funds to build a wolf sanctuary, and The Fault in Our Stars author John Green for the Visionary Award.
The ceremony was held at the Petco Park baseball stadium on 24 July (14) as part of the annual Comic-Con festival in San Diego, California, and broadcast in the U.S. on Sunday (27Jul14).
A Canadian music festival featuring performances from Snoop Dogg, Nine Inch Nails, Outkast and Soundgarden has been marred by a death mystery. Homicide cops in British Columbia are investigating the passing of 21-year-old student Nick Phongsavath, who was found dead in his tent at the Pemberton Music Festival on Friday (18Jul14).
Police fear there are "indications of foul play", but officials from the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team are refusing to speculate until an autopsy is complete.
Organisers of the Pemberton Music Festival, which began on Thursday (17Jul14), have released a statement following the tragedy.
It reads: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred on July 18 in the Pemberton Music Festival campgrounds. A festival guest was found deceased inside the campground area... Our prayers and deepest condolences go out to Mr. Phongsavath’s friends and family."
"The safety of our attendees is always our primary concern. We have significant security resources on-site including security personnel..., customer service representatives and a full medical team. We are also providing on-site counseling services for all guests and staff.
"We’d like to express our gratitude to Pemberton Fire Rescue, Village of Pemberton and SLRD Emergency Management for assisting us in caring for the campers who required relocation to other camping on-site in order to maintain the integrity of the incident scene. We are providing food, water, shelter and clothing to the fifty-five campers displaced by this incident.
"We further appreciate the co-operation and understanding of these festival attendees during this time."

The Hero hitmaker scooped awards including best Pop/Rock Artist and several music prizes for El Perdedor, his track with Marco Antonio Solis, while Santos scooped the Favorite Video prize for Propuesta Indecente among others.
Iglesias also took home the special Supernova prize for his career achievements.
Marc Anthony was honoured for his Vivir Mi Vida Tour, while other winners included Bruno Mars (Favorite Hitmaker) and Pitbull (Urban Artist).
Performers included Iglesias, Jenni Rivera's daughter Chiquis, and Latin star Wisin, who took to the stage with holograms of Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez at the BankUnited Center venue.
Pharrell Williams has pulled out of plans to join Bruno Mars on tour in Canada next week (begs21Jul14) due to scheduling issues. The Happy hitmaker has been opening for Mars on his Moonshine Jungle World Tour in recent weeks, and the pair was due to take the show to Montreal on Wednesday (23Jul14).
However, Williams has since had to cancel his appearance on the latest leg of the tour due to a "personal conflict".
Instead, Mars has recruited R&B singer Aloe Blacc, pop duo Nico & Vinz and Black Cards singer Bebe Rexha to fill in for the Canadian concerts, which will wrap up in Squamish, British Columbia on 8 August (14).
Longtime Alice Cooper collaborator Dick Wagner is recovering after undergoing heart surgery. The 71 year old guitarist, who wrote the power ballads I Might as Well Be on Mars and Only Women Bleed, checked into a hospital last week (ends11Jul14) after experiencing breathing difficulties.
He developed a lung infection after doctors cleared his arteries, according to Classic Rock magazine.
Wagner's son Robert tells the publication, "Prayers are welcome right about now. My dad is still in the hospital with a deep lung infection. Tomorrow they will wash his lungs. Doesn't sound fun, but I'm hoping it works and he can breathe again."
The rocker has been dogged by health woes in recent years - he previously suffered a heart attack and stroke, as well as kidney failure, and fell into a coma. His medical issues kept him from touring for over five years.
Wagner returned to the road with his Maestro of Rock Band in 2011.
As well as Cooper, the guitarist/songwriter has worked with Lou Reed and KISS.

From here on out we Emmy Nominated Hooligans". Rapper Kanye West gave a nod to Drake as he stood in for the star at Britain's Wireless Festival on Saturday (05Jul14) by performing three of his pal's songs. The Stronger hitmaker took Drake's place at the top of the bill after the Canadian rapper pulled out due to illness, and he marked the moment with renditions of the sick star's hits All Me, Headlines and We Made It.
West told the crowd, "My homeboy Drake can't be here but we still gotta rep (represent) for him tonight."
However, West's performance was again blighted by booing from the crowd as he launched into a rambling monologue about his public image.
West faced a similar response during his own headline set at the festival on Friday (04Jul14) when large sections of the crowd jeered him during a 20-minute rant.
Other stars to perform at Wireless on Saturday included Chance The Rapper, Rudimental, and Azealia Banks. Sunday's (06Jul14) bill includes a headline performance in London from Bruno Mars while West will play at the Birmingham, England leg of the event.
Kanye West will be rethinking his second night as London's Wireless Festival headliner on Saturday (05Jul14) after he faced booing and hecklers on Friday (04Jul14). The rapper, who agreed to fill-in for Drake after the ill Canadian announced he wouldn't be able to perform on Saturday, had a less than smooth experience on the opening night of the Finsbury Park event as music fans took exception to his ranting onstage.
Kanye was booed and heckled by festival-goers as he took aim at the media during a break in his set.
He told the crowd, "I'm not particularly angry but they've taken the idea of celebrity and tried to make me seem like I'm stupid or something. People keep looking at me like I got a problem or something, like I'm not doing something I'm meant to. The lies, the media, they want to make you feel like you're less to them in their eye."
Kanye also attacked top fashion brands such as Nike and Louis Vuitton, who he has fallen out with in the past - but it appeared fans weren't in the mood for a soapbox performance and they started leaving the venue in waves.
Tinie Tempah, Iggy Azalea, Pharrell Williams and Basement Jaxx also performed at Wireless on Friday, while Bruno Mars, Robin Thicke, Salt-N-Pepa and Ellie Goulding are among the other acts playing over the weekend.
Actor Levar Burton has set a new crowdfunding record for the most individual contributors for a single project after launching an online campaign to revive his popular U.S. children's show Reading Rainbow. The Star Trek star, who served as the educational series' executive producer and host from 1983 until 2005, is aiming to raise $5 million (£2.94 million) for the cause by the end of Wednesday (02Jul14), but he has already earned a place in the crowdfunding industry's record books after winning the support of more than 98,000 investors.
The previous record of 91,585 backers was set last year (13) by fans of the cult TV drama Veronica Mars, who helped fund a big screen adaptation of the Kristen Bell show, according to Entrepreneur.com.
Burton announced his plans to bring back Reading Rainbow online via the Kickstarter.com campaign in May (14) and he reached his initial goal of $1 million (£588,235) in less than 24 hours.
He then changed his aim to $5 million and received a huge boost from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane last week (ends27Jun14), when the animator and filmmaker pledged $1 million of his own money to the cause and promised to match all subsequent donations too.
The campaign had raised just over $4.84 million as WENN went to press.
R&B star Bruno Mars made a young car crash survivor's dreams come true on Saturday (28Jun14) by inviting the fan to his show in Cleveland, Ohio and serenading her from the stage. Zumyah Thorpe lost her pregnant mother and two sisters in an horrific car accident last year (13). The 11 year old suffered a traumatic brain injury which impacted her motor skills and she only regained the ability to speak again by learning the words to tracks by Mars.
The Grenade hitmaker learned about Thorpe's tragic story and subsequent recovery via social media and he decided to reach out to the child so he could meet her when his tour touched down in Cleveland this weekend.
He met Thorpe and her family before his gig and treated them to a private four-song set before presenting her with a teddy bear, while he also gave them tickets to attend his concert on Saturday, when he performed his hit Just the Way You Are for the pre-teen.
Mars later took to his Instagram.com account to share a photo of himself with a smiling Thorpe. In the accompanying caption, he wrote, "Tonight's show was dedicated to this amazing young woman. I love you, Zumyah."
He also uploaded a second snap of him giving Thorpe a kiss on the cheek and added, "Zumyah tonight you gave my band and I something we've never felt before. You're an inspiration to the world! #WeLoveYouZumyah."
