This weekend's Prometheus marks the return of renowned director Ridley Scott to the world of sci-fi, a genre he changed forever with his seminal 1979 film Alien. But even the momentous occasion of a semi-prequel with a thirty year gap doesn't arrive with enough fanfare to blow away a cinematic staple like the Madagascar franchise. According to Hollywood.com Box Office Analyst Paul Dergarabedian, this weekend should see the ragtag team of animals winning one for Earth over Scott's intergalactic blockbuster.
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (read the review) lands in over 4,000 theaters and should prove a breath of fresh air for parents anxious to head to theaters with the young ones. The Dreamworks animation threequel is the first family friendly film of the summer season and, with the help of 3D screens, should rake in around $55 - $60 million. Helping the movie's climb to success is the return of all the marquee names, including Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and Sacha Baron Cohen, who helped the previous Madagascar films to gross over $1.1 billion worldwide.
Thankfully for sci-fi buffs, Madagascar's success shouldn't damper Prometheus' (read the review) maiden voyage. Descending into second place, the film, starring Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron and Noomi Rapace, should do solid business with around $35 million — making it one of Scott's personal bests and proving that the hard R rating isn't a deterrent for adults.
Last week's winner, Snow White and the Huntsman (read the review), rose above predictions for its initial three-day gross, taking in a whopping $56.2 million. The Kristen Stewart fantasy grossed another $20 million during the week, putting it at a formidable $75 million domestic total going into this weekend. The film should take third place and sail by the $100 million mark by Sunday.
Men in Black 3 (read the review) enters its third week of release with a solid $120 million domestic and $441 million worldwide, surpassing the worldwide gross of 2002's Men in Black 2. Will Smith's return to summer blockbusters is expected to add a number in the low teens this weekend, placing it at $130 million.
Rounding out the top five is the biggest hit of the year, Marvel's The Avengers (read the review). The superhero epic hits its 6th week with an American total of $560 million. An expected gross around the $10 million range will see Avengers hit a staggering $1.4 billion worldwide total. If every other blockbuster looks puny in comparison, remember: they had a Hulk.

Widening the thematic scope without sacrificing too much of the claustrophobia that made the original 1979 Alien universally spooky Prometheus takes the trophy for this summer's most adult-oriented blockbuster entertainment. The movie will leave your mouth agape for its entire runtime first with its majestic exploration of an alien planet and conjectures on the origins of the human race second with its gross-out body horror that leaves no spilled gut to the imagination. Thin characters feel more like pawns in Scott's sci-fi prequel but stunning visuals shocking turns and grand questions more than make up for the shallow ensemble. "Epic" comes in many forms. Prometheus sports all of them.
Based on their discovery of a series of cave drawings all sharing a similar painted design Elizabeth (Noomi Rapace) and Charlie (Logan Marshall-Green) are recruited by Weyland to head a mission to another planet one they believe holds the answers to the creation of life on Earth. Along for the journey are Vickers (Charlize Theron) the ruthless Weyland proxy Janek (Idris Elba) a blue collar captain a slew of faceless scientists and David (Michael Fassbender) HAL 9000-esque resident android who awakens the crew of spaceship Prometheus when they arrive to their destination. Immediately upon descent there's a discovery: a giant mound that's anything but natural. The crew immediately prepares to scope out the scene zipping up high-tech spacesuits jumping in futuristic humvees and heading out to the site. What they discover are the awe-inspiring creations of another race. What they bring back to the ship is what they realize may kill their own.
The first half of Prometheus could be easily mistaken for Steven Spielberg's Alien a sense of wonder glowing from every frame not too unlike Close Encounters. Scott takes full advantage of his fictional settings and imbues them with a reality that makes them even more tantalizing. He shoots the vistas of space and the alien planet like National Geographic porn and savors the interior moments on board the Prometheus full of hologram maps sleeping pods and do-it-yourself surgery modules with the same attention. Prometheus is beautiful shot in immersive 3D that never dampers Dariusz Wolski's sharp photography. Scott's direction seems less interested in the run-or-die scenario set up in the latter half of the film but the film maintains tension and mood from beginning to end. It all just gets a bit…bloodier.
Jon Spaihts' and Damon Lindelof's script doesn't do the performers any favors shuffling them to and fro between the ship and the alien construction without much room for development. Reveals are shoehorned in without much setup (one involving Theron's Vickers that's shockingly mishandled) but for the most part the ensemble is ready to chomp into the script's bigger picture conceits. Rapace is a physical performer capable of pulling off a grisly scene involving an alien some sharp objects and a painful procedure (sure to be the scene of the blockbuster season. Among the rest of the crew Fassbender's David stands out as the film's revelatory performance delivering a digestible ambiguity to his mechanical man that playfully toys with expectations from his first entrance. The creature effects in Prometheus will wow you but even Fassbender's smallest gesture can send the mind spinning. The power of his smile packs more of a punch than any facehugger.
Much like Lindelof's Lost Prometheus aims to explore the idea of asking questions and seeking answers and on Scott's scale it's a tremendous unexpected ride. A few ideas introduced to spur action fall to the way side in the logic department but with a clear mission and end point Prometheus works as a sweeping sci-fi that doesn't require choppy editing or endless explosions to keep us on the edge of our seats. Prometheus isn't too far off from the Alien xenomorphs: born from existing DNA of another creature the movie breaks out as its own beast. And it's wilder than ever.
At the moment there are few greater clichés in the media than the freaking out single woman on the cusp of 30. Of course clichés are clichés for a reason worth exploring even through the lens of just one or two women as in Lola Versus. Unfortunately while the intention behind Lola Versus isn't that we should all be happily married by the age of 30 it still fits into the same rubric of all those "Why You're Not Married" books.
Lola (Greta Gerwig) has a gorgeous fiancé Luke (Joel Kinnaman) and they live in a giant loft together the kind of dreamy NYC real estate that seems to exist primarily in the movies. Just as they're planning their gluten-free wedding cake with a non-GMO rice milk-based frosting Luke dumps her. It's cruelly sudden — although Luke isn't a cruel man. Lola finds little comfort in the acerbic wit of her best friend the eternally single Alice (Zoe Lister-Jones) who is probably delighted to see her perfectly blonde best friend taken down a peg and into the murky world of New York coupling. Lola and Luke share a best friend Henry (Hamish Linklater) a messy-haired rumpled sweetheart who is kind and safe and the inevitable shelter for Lola's fallout. Her parents well-meaning and well-to-do hippie types feed her kombucha and try to figure out their iPads and give her irrelevant advice.
Lola Versus is slippery. Its tone careens between broad TV comedy and earnest dramedy almost as if Alice is in charge of the dirty zingers and Lola's job is to make supposedly introspective statements. Alice's vulgar non-sequiturs are tossed off without much relish and Lola's dialogue comes off too often as expository and plaintive. We don't need Lola to tell Henry "I'm vulnerable I'm not myself I'm easily persuaded" or "I'm slutty but I'm a good person!" (Which is by the way an asinine statement to make. One might even say she's not even that "slutty " she's just making dumb decisions that hurt those around her just as much as she's hurting herself.)
We know that she's a mess — that's the point of the story! It's not so much that a particularly acerbic woman wouldn't say to her best friend "Find your spirit animal and ride it until its d**k falls off " but that she wouldn't say it in the context of this movie. It's from some other movie over there one where everyone is as snarky and bitter as Alice. You can't have your black-hearted comedy and your introspective yoga classes. Is it really a stride forward for feminism that the clueless single woman has taken the place of the stoner man-child in media today? When Lola tells Luke "I'm taken by myself. I've gotta just do me for a while " it's true. But it doesn't sound true and it doesn't feel true.
In one scene Lola stumbles on the sidewalk and falls to the ground. No one asks her if she's okay or needs help; she simply gets up on her own and goes on her way. It's a moment that has happened to so many people. It's humiliating and so very public but of course you just gotta pick yourself up and get where you're going. In this movie it's a head-smackingly obvious metaphor. In one of the biggest missteps of the movie Jay Pharoah plays a bartender that makes the occasional joke while Lola is waiting tables at her mom's restaurant. His big line at the end is "And I'm your friend who's black!" It would have been better to leave his entire character on the cutting room floor than attempt such a half-hearted wink at the audience.
Lister-Jones and director Daryl Wein co-wrote the screenplay for Lola Versus as they did with 2009's Breaking Upwards. Both films deal with the ins and outs of their own romantic relationship in one way or another. Breaking Upwards a micro-budget indie about a rough patch in their relationship was much more successful in tone and direction. Lola Versus has its seeds in Lister-Jones' experience as a single woman in New York and is a little bit farther removed from their experiences. Lola Versus feels like a wasted opportunity. Relatively speaking there are so few movies getting made with a female writer or co-writer that it almost feels like a betrayal to see such a tone-deaf portrayal of women onscreen. What makes it even more disappointing is how smart and likable everyone involved is and knowing that they could have made a better movie.
A kids’ movie without the cheeky jokes for adults is like a big juicy BLT without the B… or the T. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted may have a title that sounds like it was made up in a cartoon sequel laboratory but when it comes to serving up laughs just think of the film as a BLT with enough extra bacon to satisfy even the wildest of animals — or even a parent with a gaggle of tots in tow. Yes even with that whole "Afro Circus" nonsense.
It’s not often that we find exhaustively franchised films like the Madagascar set that still work after almost seven years. Despite being spun off into TV shows and Christmas specials in addition to its big screen adventures the series has not only maintained its momentum it has maintained the part we were pleasantly surprised by the first time around: great jokes.
In this third installment of the series – the trilogy-maker if you will – directing duo Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath add Conrad Vernon (director Monsters Vs. Aliens) to the helm as our trusty gang swings back into action. Alex the lion (Ben Stiller) Marty the zebra (Chris Rock) Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer) are stuck in Africa after the hullaballoo of Madagascar 2 and they’ll do anything to get back to their beloved New York. Just a hop skip and a jump away in Monte Carlo the penguins are doing their usual greedy schtick but the zoo animals catch up with them just in time to catch the eye of the sinister animal control stickler Captain Dubois (Frances McDormand). And just like that the practically super human captain is chasing them through Monte Carlo and the rest of Europe in hopes of planting Alex’s perfectly coifed lion head on her wall of prized animals.
Luckily for pint-sized viewers Dubois’ terrifying presence is balanced out by her sheer inhuman strength uncanny guiles and Stretch Armstrong flexibility (ah the wonder of cartoons) as well as Alex’s escape plan: the New Yorkers run away with the European circus. While Dubois’ terrifying Doberman-like presence looms over the entire film a sense of levity (which is a word the kiddies might learn from Stiller’s eloquent lion) comes from the plan for salvation in which the circus animals and the zoo animals band together to revamp the circus and catch the eye of a big-time American agent. Sure the pacing throughout the first act is practically nonexistent running like a stampede through the jungle but by the time we're palling around under the big top the film finds its footing.
The visual splendor of the film (and man is there a champion size serving of it) the magnificent danger and suspense is enhanced to great effect by the addition of 3D technology – and not once is there a gratuitous beverage or desperate Crocodile Dundee knife waved in our faces to prove its worth. The caveat is that the soundtrack employs a certain infectious Katy Perry ditty at the height of the 3D spectacular so parents get ready to hear that on repeat until the leaves turn yellow.
But visual delights and adventurous zoo animals aside Madagascar 3’s real strength is in its script. With the addition of Noah Baumbach (Greenberg The Squid and the Whale) to the screenwriting team the script is infused with a heightened level of almost sarcastic gravitas – a welcome addition to the characteristically adult-friendly reference-heavy humor of the other Madagascar films. To bring the script to life Paramount enlisted three more than able actors: Vitaly the Siberian tiger (Bryan Cranston) Gia the Leopard (Jessica Chastain) and Stefano the Italian Sealion (Martin Short). With all three actors draped in European accents it might take viewers a minute to realize that the cantankerous tiger is one and the same as the man who plays an Albuquerque drug lord on Breaking Bad but that makes it that much sweeter to hear him utter slant-curse words like “Bolshevik” with his usual gusto.
Between the laughs the terror of McDormand’s Captain Dubois and the breathtaking virtual European tour the Zoosters’ accidental vacation is one worth taking. Madagascar 3 is by no means an insta-classic but it’s a perfectly suited for your Summer-at-the-movies oasis.
We saw plenty of good and bad at this year's MTV Movie Awards: Russell Brand joked about ex-wife Katy Perry during his introduction speech; Mark Wahlberg threatened an audience member; and Kristen Stewart couldn't keep her hands off of herself (what else was she supposed to do without Robert Pattinson?). But who looked the best (and who looked the worst) on the red carpet? While some celebrities like Charlize Theron and Emma Stone stunned in their beautiful dresses, others like Emma Watson and Nikki Reed chose get-ups more outlandish than the awards' categories.

Best and Worst Moments of the 2012 MTV Movie Awards

The action blockbuster earned a total of four honours, including Best On-Screen Transformation (Elizabeth Banks) and Best Fight, but the coveted Best Movie title went to The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1.
The vampire franchise also claimed victory for Best Kiss - Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart made it four years in a row, but the 22-year-old beauty was left to collect the award on her own as the British hunk was unable to attend.
The wizards weren't left out either - the stars of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 walked away with Best Cast.
Emma Stone's co-stars and friends Viola Davis, Mila Kunis, Jim Carrey and Steve Carell all hailed the actress with funny tributes as she was presented with the inaugural Trailblazer Award, and Johnny Depp was saluted by Aerosmith legends Steven Tyler and Joe Perry as they presented him with the Generation Award.
Depp also showed off his rock 'n' roll credentials by jamming with The Black Keys for a performance of Gold on the Ceiling before collecting his honour, and the actor admitted he was flattered to receive the accolade.
Accepting the Golden Popcorn prize, he joked, "This is quite an amazing honour, truly. It's like a 'Get out of the business' award, basically. It's like, 'Alright, you've done too much...' It's an honour to be presented by these two legends, Steven and Joe, and these up-and-coming legends, The Black Keys, so thank you very much."
Depp's collaboration with The Black Keys was the musical highlight of the night, but rapper Wiz Khalifa showed the crowd at Los Angeles' Gibson Amphitheatre a good time as he performed his new single, Work Hard, Play Hard, and fun. and Janelle Monae opened the show by performing their smash hit We Are Young.
Comedian Russell Brand provided the tongue-in-cheek laughs as the host of the ceremony, while guest presenters included Charlie Sheen, Charlize Theron, Mila Kunis, Jessica Biel and Mark Wahlberg.

The MTV Movie Awards this year showed us a lot of, well, stuff. It wasn't all bad, and it wasn't all good; but watching the awards show was an experience. Some people got awards, and a few of those awards were actually ones that they didn't make up on the spot. But we're here to bring you the best and worst moments from this year's big dance. In case you missed it, or didn't!
Best Red Carpet Moment:
Perks of Being a Wallflower Trailer Debut. The long-awaited film from the book with the same name is sure to be a hit among the MTV-and-older set. The book was nearly universally loved, so to see the trailer released (finally!) after years of waiting for the film is pretty exciting.

The whole intro reel was just radical and reminds the world that Johnny Depp is still totally the man. And to follow up with Johnny performing with The Black Keys? Be still my heart. That was one of those old school-style MTV moments that reminds you of the networks' heyday.

(Non)-surprise surprise! MTV Movie Awards Winners: Which Winners Were Actually Good?
Universal’s “Snow White and the Huntsman” had a fairy tale of a weekend with a better-than-expected first place debut of $56.2 million. The film also performed well internationally in 45 territories taking in $39.3 million for a worldwide total of $95.6 million. The highly stylized and dark interpretation of the classic story stars “Twilight’s” Kristen Stewart as Snow White, “The Avengers” Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman and Charlize Theron as the scenery-chewing Evil Queen. The film attracted women (53%) who related to the strong female characters and intricate storyline as well as men (47%), who enjoyed the action elements and darker side of this film’s re-imagining of the Snow White mythology. Kudos to first time director Rupert Sanders for knocking this one out of the park!
Sony’s “Men in Black 3” last week led the Memorial Weekend box office derby in its debut and gave the studio its fifth number one opening this year. After a ten year hiatus the alien-busting crime fighters returned to the big screen with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in the roles of Agent J and K that they made famous. A time-twisting plot device lands Josh Brolin in the sci-fi mix as a young version of Jones and global audiences have responded by buying up over $386 million in tickets to date. This weekend a second place finish of $29.3 million pushed the film to $112.3 million in North America after just 10 days in release. To re-cap: “Men in Black 3” took in $78.6 million overseas this weekend for an international cumulative of $274.6 million and a massive worldwide total of $386.9 million.
Disney release of Marvel’s “The Avengers” crossed the $500 million mark in record time last Saturday after just 23 days in release and in the process became the 4th highest grossing film in North America in record time. In its fifth weekend the box office superheroes smashed their way into third place with a gross of $20.3 million. The record-breaking blockbuster also surpassed “The Dark Knight” and its $533.3 million total domestic gross to become the third highest grossing film of all-time behind only “Avatar” and “Titanic,” with $552.7 million by Sunday night after just 31 days in release. “The Avengers” also became the third highest grossing film of all-time globally over the weekend.

Over the weekend Marvel’s The Avengers became the #3 film of all time globally (passing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’s $1,328M) and domestically (passing The Dark Knight’s $533M). It is the #5 film of all time internationally (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is #4 with $803M).

Universal’s “Battleship” and Paramount’s “The Dictator” both in their third weekends took the fourth and fifth spot with $4.8 million and $4.7 million and both crossed the $50 million domestic mark by the end of the weekend.

After a month packed full with science fiction flicks, the fantasy genre is primed to take the number one spot at the U.S. box office this weekend with the release of Snow White and the Huntsman (read the review). Resident box office magic mirror Paul Dergarabedian predicts the reimagined fairy tale, starring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron, should take the throne from Men in Black 3 with upwards of $35 million. Dergarabedian suggest there's a little something for everyone, with a strong female lead and plenty of Lord of the Rings-style action (and for those looking for alien alternatives, SWATH features plenty of its own creatures).
Regardless of the incoming knights in shining armor, MIB 3 (read the review) should hold its own with around $30 million. With a strong Memorial Day opening, the movie has already grossed $200 million worldwide and should pass the $100 million mark by Sunday. That's a tidy sum, but even after crossing the nine-digit mark, the movie will still have some work to do if it hopes to crack Will Smith's personal top ten. The bottom slot of the career list is held by 2003's Bad Boys II with $138 million!
Marvel's The Avengers (read the review) continues to do steady business in America, breaking records with every passing day. In its fifth weekend of release, the box office should easily take third place with a $20 million take, finally picking off The Dark Knight's $533.3 million total and becoming the third highest grossing film of all time (only behind James Cameron's powerhouses Titanic and Avatar. By Sunday night, Avengers will have grossed around $550 million in 31 days of release.
Rounding out the weekend are Battleship (read the review) and The Dictator (read the review) , both in their third weeks and aiming for around $5 - $7 million. That should bring the sci-fi blockbuster and dark comedy to around $50 million domestic each.
